  1. Am I crazy? Am I making this up?

Does anyone else remember that time in #2020 when the #pandemic #lockdown caused #gasprices to plummet from a demand-crash and #trump intervened to raise them so the #oilcompanies could stay solvent?

Was that just me? Correct me if I imagined this.

  2. There is something fundamentally wrong with oil companies making billions in profit while citizens and taxpayers bear the costs of the externalities they cause, including climate change, pollution, poor air quality, and the destruction of nature. Something has to be done about it. This is not a "leftwing" opinion but just looking at it with an economic/rational view....

Major #OilCompanies reap massive profits as US and Iran fighting drives energy prices higher

    By CATHY BUSSEWITZ
    Updated 11:11 AM EDT, July 31, 2026

NEW YORK (AP) — "American oil and gas giants raked in massive spring profits while fighting between Iran and the U.S. impeded petroleum shipments and consumers around the world paid more for fuel and confronted shortages.

"The conflict, now in its sixth month, halted most shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway that previously served as a delivery route for a fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas. With global supplies constrained, prices for Brent crude, the international standard, soared from about $70 to above $100 a barrel for much of March, April and May, and at one point reached $126.

"The money that oil companies accrued between the beginning of April and the end of June could receive extra scrutiny this year. Gasoline, diesel and jet fuel prices climbed sharply during that period, increasing costs for drivers and airline passengers. Supplies ran low in some countries, leading to sporadic fuel rationing in #Australia and government office closures in #Nepal and #SriLanka.

" #ExxonMobil on Friday reported that its second quarter profits doubled to $14.53 billion, boosted by record diesel production. The oil giant, based in Spring, Texas, brought in $116.02 billion in revenue, up 42%.

" #Chevron, based in Houston, nearly quadrupled its profits to $12.07 billion and revenue jumped 56% to $70.06 billion.

"Six of #Europe’s largest oil companies posted combined first-quarter profits of $22 billion, more than 40% higher than last year.

" 'There are constituencies around the world who are having a very good crisis, and the oil producers are one of them,' said Patrick Galey, #FossilFuels lead at #GlobalWitness, a nonprofit organization that investigates environmental issues. 'When you compare that to the hundreds of millions of people who are struggling with #RollingBlackouts, with #ElectricityCurbs, #rationing, waiting in line for #FoodQueues, or the disruption to fertilizers and the potential impact that that has on food prices, we don’t think that it’s a justifiable price for the rest of the world to be paying.' "

  7. The report #OilCompanies are worried about: #ClimateAttribution science

New report says our ability to tie weather damages to #ClimateChange is improving.

    John Timmer – Jul 17, 2026

Excerpt: "Climate change is being driven largely by the greenhouse gases we’ve pumped into the atmosphere, which trap more of the Sun’s energy there. That added energy increases the odds of extreme events: longer, more intense heat waves and droughts, interspersed with excessive precipitation. But these sorts of events have happened in the past—how can we tell if any given weather disaster has been made more likely by the climate?

"It’s a question with implications for everything from building codes to disaster preparedness. And there’s some good news: According to a report released by the US National Academies of Science on Thursday, the field of climate attribution is growing increasingly mature and can answer some questions for us with far greater confidence than it could just a decade ago. The report also notes that there are still important limits and suggests steps to address them.

"Overall, this makes it clear that climate attribution is normal, mainstream science. And the #FossilFuel industry views that as a problem, as it could make it easier to hold companies liable for damages. This has triggered a backlash that has Republicans in Congress and state governments threatening the National Academies’ funding."

  8. The implications are clear. #Preparedness against #weather_calamities will degrade right away, putting millions at risk. In the long run, the world will walk blindly into an #apocalypse.

But why? The alarming data may compel the world to switch to #RenewableEnergy sources. But then, how will the ultra #wealthy #OilCompanies milk us for profit without the #CentralizedEnergy sources and distribution infrastructure they control? It's always about money!

  11. Why Americans Shouldn’t Sacrifice While Oil Companies Profit From the Iran War

Politicians urge sacrifice, but oil companies profit from Iran war price hikes. Here’s why gas prices are a choice, not a necessity.

„The U.S. produces more oil than it needs; it is a net exporter of oil and petroleum products. Problems in the Strait need not change the amount of oil produced in the U.S., nor the cost of pumping oil in the U.S., nor the amount of gasoline produced and used in the U.S.

But when prices recently increased for oil internationally, U.S. oil companies also raised prices stateside.“

Lots of Oil, Little Production: What to Know About Venezuelan Energy

The South American country increasingly at odds with the Trump administration has the world’s largest oil reserves. Listen to this article · 6:17 min Learn more

Where there are large oil reserves

Venezuela sits on more oil than Saudi Arabia, Russia, the United States and every other country. Yet, it produces and sells only about 1 percent of the crude the world is using.

President Trump’s recent threats against the Venezuelan government and his administration’s strikes on boats in the Caribbean Sea have cast fresh attention on the country’s energy wealth, which has tantalized generations of oilmen.

It is hard to know what role oil may end up playing in the tussle between the Trump administration and the government of President Nicolás Maduro. But oil has long been central to U.S.-Venezuela relations.

How much oil does Venezuela have?

Venezuela has roughly 17 percent of the world’s known oil reserves, or more than 300 billion barrels, according to the Oil & Gas Journal, an industry publication. In other words, that’s how much oil experts believe could be extracted from the country’s territory.

To put that in context, the United States, the world’s top oil producer, has an estimated 81 billion barrels of proven reserves.

Venezuela pumped almost 5 percent of the world’s oil in 1997, but years of mismanagement, underinvestment and U.S. sanctions have squeezed output. The difficulty of extracting the country’s tar-like oil has also complicated matters.

The United States used to buy most of Venezuela’s oil, but that trade stopped in 2019 after the first Trump administration imposed sanctions on the country’s state-owned oil company, Petróleos de Venezuela. Shipments to the United States resumed in 2023, but volumes have remained low. Most of Venezuela’s crude now flows to China.

Which oil companies do business in the country?

Venezuela has seesawed between welcoming private oil companies and asserting state control over the industry.
