And for us techs in IT - well we basically just have to sell it to the ones with the money then.

Having zero in-person work events on my calendar this week was a real treat after spending the prior week in Vegas bouncing between two conferences. That downtime also allowed me to finish two stories from those events.

I wrote up a Cloudflare report on trends in distributed denial-of-service attacks and closed it out with a reminder of how efforts to set security standards for the connected gadgets that are often enlisted into DDoS botnets continue to lag.

The easier thing to do with Ed Zitron’s talk at Ai4 would have been to write a scaffold of a post around his most memorable lines, but I wanted to provide some context for the numbers he threw out. The required research started feeling like an exercise in yak shaving, in part because the AI data-center news cycle did not stop.

After seeing so many other places jump on this story, I decided I should do my part–and make sure that my own post, unlike so many others, would feature a photo of 757 in Delta colors instead of some other plane in DL’s fleet.
8/14/2026: At Black Hat, AI is helping security pros find threats—and creating new ones, Fast Company
This was a Black Hat meeting request that I enthusiastically obliged, because Black Hat network admins don’t hold back when they’re talking about unwise behavior they’ve seen on the conference’s WiFi. James Pope (outside this information-security conference, senior director of security product research at Corelight) had some forceful advice for people using AI to vibe-code their own software: “Stop having janky apps.”
8/15/2026: At Rush Concert, AT&T’s Turbo Live Rocked, With Dazzling Download Speeds, PCMag
This story ran almost a month after the concert in question; first I had to field various bits of breaking news, then I had to tell my AT&T PR contact to set aside my questions about this data-only power-up and instead answer a query about a round of retroactive rate hikes, then Ai4 and Black Hat monopolized my journalistic bandwidth. I may or may not have also needed additional time to see how many Rush song-title references I could sneak into this post.

Am I doing something wrong or is there an error in the #FRR documentation???
this syntax doesn't appear to work.

The "[metric METRIC]" does not autocomplete and it rejects my command when I try to use it.
Can someone please provide a working example of using metric when also network, gateway and a interface name are specified?

And Amazon now says they're looking into issues in Oregon (US-WEST-2).
So something major happened earlier that impacted services around the world. But only for a few minutes. Appears to be recovered now (they probably rerouted traffic from the rest of the world).

Needed features:

* 2.5G
* non-blocking
* ideally 10G or ≥10G SFP+ port
* ideally Jumbo-Frames
* Edit: ideally PoE
* unmanaged (managed works as well, but I don't need those features as long as it doesn't break things like VLANs and just passes them through unfiltered)I'm currently interested in seeing what the lowest price point without compromising on these features is.

Anybody that suggests that the current incarnations of #AI are ubflawed would be a fool.
That said we see the beginnings of a new wave of technology which coujd be hugely helpful to society as whole.
The true danger are the #billionaires who are trying to ring fence the emerging tech to achieve #trillionaire status at the expense of #NOC normies
Yes to AI for me, but with lots of regulation and while we’re at it, it’s time for a #WealthTax

The Network Automation BoF (Birds of a Feature) at NANOG 97 was a huge success!
Attendees introduced themselves and shared their experiences and challenges encountered in their automation journeys. The community effectively collaborated to address each other's problems and generated ideas for advancing their automation efforts.
Participants came from diverse backgrounds, including NOC managers, network managers, network monitoring professionals, network engineers, and software engineers.
A key discussion point was the importance of not attempting to solve all network automation problems at once. It is acceptable to tackle one issue at a time and iterate on solutions later
Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, expressing desire for more sessions like this. I have submitted requests to the NANOG Programming Committee for additional events through the end of 2027.

🆕 While the #AMOC is showing signs of slowing down, its Nordic branch #NOC is projected to strengthen. Researchers have now identified a density-driven mechanism that links these opposing trends.
“The stability of the NOC and its projected increase have been viewed by some as a contradiction to the weakening AMOC. But our findings tell us the opposite. The strengthening of the NOC is a physical consequence of AMOC weakening,” said co-author @rahmstorf of PIK.
