"Newly discovered documents affirm that the #automobile and #petroleum industries funded early climate science #Keeling conducted at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) between 1954 and 1956. Records show that 'oil and auto companies' sponsored the scientist’s research via an organization called the Southern California Air Pollution Foundation, formed in 1953 to tackle Los Angeles’s infamous smog. American Motors, #Chrysler, #Ford, and #GeneralMotors were among 18 automotive companies that gave money to the foundation.
"A 1959 internal U.S. Public Health Service memo also identifies the #AmericanPetroleumInstitute ( #API ) and the #WesternOilAndGasAssociation — the oldest petroleum trade association in the U.S., which is now known as the #WesternStatesPetroleumAssociation — as 'major contributors to the funds of the Air Pollution Foundation.' Its Board of Trustees included top-level representatives from the Southern California Gas Company, the Southern California Edison Co., Chrysler, General Motors, and Union Oil (now #Chevron).

And there’s some good news: According to a report released by the US National Academies of Science on Thursday, the field of climate attribution is growing increasingly mature and can answer some questions for us with far greater confidence than it could just a decade ago. The report also notes that there are still important limits and suggests steps to address them.

"Advocates call for Kagan investigation on climate change bias
Advocates are calling on the U.S. Senate Monday to investigate conflicts of interest from U.S. Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan. The advocates argued Kagan was biased in favor of climate science and should not participate in a consequential case that could determine the future of climate change policies.
Leaders from the Judicial Crisis Network, the Heritage Foundation, the National Republican Lawyers Foundation and others wrote a letter to lawmakers on the Senate Judiciary Committee about concern over Kagan’s support for climate change.
Justices on the high court are expected to hear Suncor v. Boulder County Commissioners, a case examining whether state and local governments can prevent fossil fuel companies from engaging in global emissions activities that contribute to climate change.

The advocates argued that Kagan’s authorship as part of the manual is evidence she is unable to make an unbiased decision in Suncor v. Boulder County Commissioners. The Constitution requires justices on the Supreme Court to recuse themselves from consideration of cases in which 'impartiality might reasonably be questioned.'

May 09, 2024"Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump made a straightforward offer to some of the top fossil fuel executives in the United States during a dinner at his #MarALago club last month, which marked the hottest April on record.
According to new reporting, Trump pledged to swiftly gut climate regulations put in place by the Biden administration if the oil and gas industry raises $1 billion for his 2024 presidential campaign.
The “remarkably blunt and transactional pitch,” reported by The Washington Post, was Trump’s latest explicit statement of his intention to give the fossil fuel industry free rein to wreck the planet if he wins a second term in power. Executives from #Exxon, #Chevron, #OccidentalPetroleum, and other prominent fossil fuel companies reportedly attended the Mar-a-Lago dinner.
Late last year, Trump said he would be a dictator on the first day of his second term, vowing to use his executive authority to “close the border” and “drill, drill, drill” for the fossil fuels that are driving global temperatures to catastrophic extremes and imperiling hopes for a livable future.
The Post reported Thursday that Trump said a $1 billion investment in his run against Democratic President Joe Biden would be a “deal” for Big Oil “because of the taxation and regulation they would avoid thanks to him.”
“The contrast between the two candidates on climate policy could not be more stark,” the Post noted. “Biden has called #GlobalWarming an ‘existential threat’ and over the last three years, his administration has finalized 100 new #environmental regulations aimed at cutting #AirPollution and #GreenhouseGas emissions, restricting toxic chemicals, and conserving public lands and waters. In comparison, Trump has called #ClimateChange a ‘hoax,’ and his administration weakened or wiped out more than 125 environmental rules and policies over four years.”
Will Bunch, a columnist for The Philadelphia Inquirer, wrote in response to the Post‘s reporting that “you won’t read a more important story today.”
