Eight new #gas and #OilWells have been approved for San Ardo.
“These enhanced# oil recovery methods come with all the risks of traditional production,” says Cooper Kass, an attorney with the Center for Biological Diversity, a watchdog organization which has filed multiple lawsuits regarding California’s oil and gas industry. “They also bring a number of additional risks, including the potential for the high-pressure injection to damage the wellbore and/or crack the surrounding rock, which could lead to migration and #groundwater contamination.”—Report by Katie Rodriguez, #MontereyCountyNow

#BigOil Knew It Was Wrecking #Louisiana ’s Coast, Records Show
Now, parish lawsuits, including one in front of the Supreme Court, could make oil giants pay to restore the state’s vanishing marshes.
Emily Sanders 03/26/26
Excerpt: "Now, one of those cases is under consideration by the US Supreme Court. Last year, a state court jury found #Chevron liable in a lawsuit brought by #PlaqueminesParish, one of more than 40 parish lawsuits accusing oil companies of failing to secure permits for their operations and neglecting to clean up the damage they left behind in violation of state coastal management law. After the landmark verdict requiring Chevron to spend $745 million to restore the coast, the company appealed the case to the Supreme Court, which heard arguments in January.
"In light of the industry’s successful lobbying for legislation limiting landowners’ lawsuits, parish lawsuits are an especially crucial avenue to hold the companies accountable, some local attorneys say. If the Supreme Court rules in favor of the parishes and they continue to win their cases in state courts, they could make Chevron, #Exxon, #BP, #Shell, and other oil companies pay billions of dollars to help fund coastal restoration efforts as the state runs out of resources to support cleanup.

They Are Dying. And #Canada Is Watching.
#Mikisew #Cree’s own health study confirms what the community has always known: the #OilSands are killing them. If governments and industry don’t act, they say they will shut it all down.
by Brandi Morin
Apr 13, 2026Excerpt: "The findings confirmed what this community has carried in their grief, in their graveyards, for generations: cancer rates in Fort Chipewyan are at least 25 percent higher than the rest of Alberta. Since 1993, there have been 149 documented cases — and that number, Tuccaro says, is a gross underestimate. People who leave the community for treatment are no longer counted in local statistics. Factor those in, and the real number for Mikisew Cree members alone, he estimates, is closer to 250 to 300."

At #Chevron’s Gates, Communities Demand #Justice and a #FossilFree Future
#AntiChevron Day 2026 united communities fighting #extraction, #EnvironmentalRacism, and #corporate impunity across continents
May 21, 2026 | Paul Paz y Miño
"Nearly three decades after communities in the Ecuadorian Amazon first brought global attention to Chevron’s crimes, and 13 years after activists launched the first Anti-Chevron Day in 20 countries, the resistance continues. Chevron remains one of the most polluting companies on Earth – and one of the most determined to avoid accountability for it.
Anti-Chevron Day
"For the 13th year running, Anti-Chevron Day brought frontline leaders from across the globe to the shadow of Chevron’s #RichmondCA refinery, where communities gathered with anger, grief, music, ceremony, and determination to confront one of the world’s most destructive oil companies.
"The gathering came just weeks after the historic First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels in Santa Marta, #Colombia, where Indigenous leaders and governments demanded an urgent and just transition away from the fossil fuel economy that continues to poison the territories and devastate the health of frontline communities worldwide. In Richmond, that demand felt immediate and deeply personal. It is being shaped by the people most directly harmed by extraction and pollution, and by movements building solidarity across borders.
"Chevron must clean up its '#RainforestChernobyl' in the #EcuadorianAmazon!
"For over three decades, Chevron chose profit over people. While drilling in the Ecuadorian Amazon from 1964 to 1990, it deliberately dumped more than 16 billion gallons of #ToxicWastewater, spilled roughly 17 million gallons of #CrudeOil, and left #HazardousWaste in hundreds of open pits dug out of the forest floor."

"About 12 percent of Monterey County’s oil and gas wells are located within 200 feet of a river or creek. This includes the Salinas River, which runs through the San Ardo oil field, and is a critical source of the county’s groundwater.
"In December 2025, over 4,000 gallons of oil and toxic wastewater spilled in the San Ardo oil field, just over a mile from where the Sargent Creek feeds the Salinas River. It is unconfirmed whether that spill was connected to an active or idle well.”

#Trump to #BigOil Execs: Give Me $1 Billion and I’ll Help You Wreck the Planet
“You won’t read a more important story today,” said one commentator. “Trump is willing to literally destroy the planet for $1 billion.”
Jake Johnson
May 09, 2024"Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump made a straightforward offer to some of the top fossil fuel executives in the United States during a dinner at his #MarALago club last month, which marked the hottest April on record.
According to new reporting, Trump pledged to swiftly gut climate regulations put in place by the Biden administration if the oil and gas industry raises $1 billion for his 2024 presidential campaign.
The “remarkably blunt and transactional pitch,” reported by The Washington Post, was Trump’s latest explicit statement of his intention to give the fossil fuel industry free rein to wreck the planet if he wins a second term in power. Executives from #Exxon, #Chevron, #OccidentalPetroleum, and other prominent fossil fuel companies reportedly attended the Mar-a-Lago dinner.
Late last year, Trump said he would be a dictator on the first day of his second term, vowing to use his executive authority to “close the border” and “drill, drill, drill” for the fossil fuels that are driving global temperatures to catastrophic extremes and imperiling hopes for a livable future.
The Post reported Thursday that Trump said a $1 billion investment in his run against Democratic President Joe Biden would be a “deal” for Big Oil “because of the taxation and regulation they would avoid thanks to him.”
“The contrast between the two candidates on climate policy could not be more stark,” the Post noted. “Biden has called #GlobalWarming an ‘existential threat’ and over the last three years, his administration has finalized 100 new #environmental regulations aimed at cutting #AirPollution and #GreenhouseGas emissions, restricting toxic chemicals, and conserving public lands and waters. In comparison, Trump has called #ClimateChange a ‘hoax,’ and his administration weakened or wiped out more than 125 environmental rules and policies over four years.”
Will Bunch, a columnist for The Philadelphia Inquirer, wrote in response to the Post‘s reporting that “you won’t read a more important story today.”
“Trump is willing to literally destroy the planet for $1 billion,” Bunch added. "

#Wikipedia - #Venezuela
#Pollution at #MaracaiboLake"#LakeMaracaibo in the state of #Zulia is one of the most important bodies of water in the western region of Venezuela. This lake was also the site of one of the worst environmental catastrophes in Venezuela's history: the #BarrosoII blowout in 1922; an oil well that began spewing huge quantities of oil for 9 days, spilling around 900,000 barrels in the area. This oil disaster, paradoxically, became a milestone for the abundance of the oil industry in the country.
"Erick Camargo indicates that oil spills generated by the lack of maintenance of the complex network of oil infrastructure continue to be a constant and are the main cause of contamination in the lake. However, he also indicates that the use of #agrochemicals on nearby crops and the discharge of #sewage worsen the situation.
"A 2022 scientific paper reveals the presence of multiple #toxic elements in surface sediments in different parts of the lake. This constitutes a high risk for the flora and fauna of the region, as well as for the health of the human communities living in the areas where the samples were taken. Another study in 2007 revealed the presence of #ToxicMetals in part of the subway aquifers connected to the lake basin; the samples taken had values well above the limits allowed for #DrinkingWater according to national and international regulations."

Serious air and water quality violations have been documented since the 1970s, and elevated #cancer risk has been found. The region's population is disproportionately #Black and #LowIncome.
"Commentators including Chris Hedges, Joe Sacco, Robert Bullard and Stephen Lerner have argued that #corporate business practices contribute to producing #SacrificeZones and that these zones most commonly exist in low-income and minority, usually #AfricanAmerican communities. Sacrifice zones are a central topic for the graphic novel #DaysOfDestructionDaysOfRevolt, written by Hedges and illustrated by Sacco.
"In 2012, Hedges stated that examples of sacrifice zones included #PineRidge, South Dakota and #CamdenNJ. In 2017 a #WestCalumet public housing project in East Chicago, Indiana built at the former site of a lead smelter needed to be demolished and soil replaced to bring the area up to residential standards, displacing 1000 residents. In 2014, Naomi Klein wrote that 'running an economy on energy sources that release poisons as an unavoidable part of their extraction and refining has always required sacrifice zones."

#Wikipedia - Origin of the concept of a #SacrificeZone
"According to the United Nations Human Rights Council [#UNHRC], the term Sacrifice zone emerged in the #ColdWar period when #NuclearTesting, conducted by #colonial powers, such as the #UnitedStates, #France, the #UnitedKingdom, and the #SovietUnion transformed sections of land into #uninhabitable and highly #radioactive areas. Sacrifice zones can be defined as communities that experience dangerous levels of hazardous contamination and waste exposure. Sacrifice zones are linked to #racism, #oppression, #patriarchy, and #colonialism, as they are hubs of #pollution that disproportionately target and harm the physical and mental health of marginalized groups who face overlapping forms of #oppressions.
According to Helen Huntington Smith, the term was first used in the U.S. discussing the long-term effects of #StripMining #coal in the American West in the 1970s. The National Academy of Sciences/National Academy of Engineering Study Committee on the Potential for Rehabilitating Lands Surface Mined for Coal in the Western United States produced a 1973 report that introduced the term, finding:
In each zone the probability of rehabilitating an area depends upon the land use objectives, the characteristics of the site, the technology available, and the skill with which this technology is applied. At the extremes, if surface mined lands are declared national sacrifice areas, all ecological zones have a high probability of being successfully rehabilitated. If, however, complete restoration is the objective, rehabilitation in each zone has no probability of success.
Similarly in 1975, Genevieve Atwood wrote in Scientific American:
Surface mining without #reclamation removes the land forever from #productive use; such land can best be classified as a #NationalSacrifice area. With successful reclamation, however, surface mining can become just one of a series of land uses that merely interrupt a current use and then return the land to an equivalent potential productivity or an even higher one.
Huntington Smith wrote in 1975, "The Panel that issued the cautious and scholarly National Academy of Sciences report unwittingly touched off a verbal bombshell" with the phrase National Sacrifice Area; "The words exploded in the Western press overnight. Seized upon by a people who felt themselves being served up as 'national sacrifices', they became a watchword and a rallying cry." The term sparked public debate, including among #environmentalists and politicians such as future Colorado governor Richard Lamm.
The term continued to be used in the context of strip mining until at least 1999: '#WestVirginia has become an environmental sacrifice zone'."

From 2014... How #USEvangelicals Fueled the Rise of #Russia’s ‘#ProFamily’ Right
An alliance is born between #AntiGay, #AntiAbortion American groups and the #RussianOrthodoxChurch
by Adam Federman, January 7, 2014
Long excerpt [pay attention to the names named!] :
"This rising #Russian social #conservative movement frequently invokes the argument that #ProGay and #WomensRights groups are puppets of the West, which is seeking to undermine Russian autonomy and interfere in the country’s internal affairs. At an annual meeting of journalists and academics presided over by Vladimir #Putin in Valdai in September, the Russian president said that European countries had strayed from their roots by legalizing #GayMarriage. He urged Russians to embrace the conservative values of the #OrthodoxChurch and other traditional religions and issued a warning to those who might want to challenge those values. 'Russia’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity are unconditional—these are red lines no one is allowed to cross,' he declared.
"Several #LGBT rights groups have been targeted under another new law, which requires any nongovernmental organization that receives funding from other countries for political activities to register as a '#ForeignAgent.' Failure to do so can lead to investigations, legal action or crippling fines. The implication is that these groups are not only agents of the West but also out of touch with everyday Russians.
"The irony is that it is the new conservative vanguard—anti-gay, anti-abortion and pro–'#TraditionalFamily'—that has most successfully cultivated the West’s financial and institutional support. Scott Lively, an extreme anti-gay campaigner, all but took credit for the new law, calling it 'one of the proudest achievements of my career,' while #BrianBrown, president of the #NationalOrganizationForMarriage, visited Moscow with much fanfare just before the new law was passed. But the language of Russia’s anti-gay and anti-abortion movement seems to borrow most heavily from mainstream evangelicals and conservative politicians in the United States and Europe. Referring to the anti-abortion bill passed in 2011, Lyubov Erofeeva, executive director of the Russian Association for Population and Development, a women’s advocacy group, said: 'It was 100 percent clear that everything was copied from the experience of American #fundamentalists and conservative circles of several European countries where #abortion is forbidden or restricted severely.'
"The church’s close ties with American evangelicals reflect a shift in policy. For much of the post-Soviet period, the Russian Orthodox Church held evangelical denominations at arm’s length, fearing that they would compete for influence within Russia. But as the church has consolidated its power, it has come to view the evangelical community as a partner. 'The #ROC realizes that the evangelical denominations are not their opponents but rather their allies in the relations between the church and the secular population,' says Olga Kazmina, a professor of ethnology at Moscow State University.
" 'It’s a re-envisioned paradigm,' says Father #LeonidKishkovsky, head of the Orthodox Church in America’s Department of External Affairs. In many ways, it makes sense, he adds: both religious groups share an ideological commitment and have grown disillusioned with the way mainline churches have dealt with issues like gay marriage and abortion. 'But what I’m quite nervous about is the ideological core which actually motivates both sides,' Kishkovsky says. 'Where is the motivating force? Is it in faith? Or is it in political ideology?'
"The Russian Orthodox Church’s chief emissary to the US evangelical community is #HilarionAlfeyev, a high-ranking bishop and chairman of the powerful Department of External Church Relations (the position previously held by #PatriarchKirill). In February 2011, the 47-year-old Alfeyev traveled to Washington, where he met with prominent evangelical and 'pro-family' leaders; and then to Dallas, where he addressed thousands of members of the Highland Park Presbyterian Church and emphasized the importance of 'creat[ing] new alliances,' especially around issues of marriage, abortion and the family. Alfeyev also visited the #DallasTheologicalSeminary and had an hour-long meeting with #GeorgeWBush.
"The trip to Dallas grew out of an increasingly close friendship between church leaders and a small circle of American and European Christian businessmen in Moscow. Alfeyev’s visit was organized by #JerryFullinwider, an #OilExecutive and elder of the #HighlandParkChurch who, until recently, had business interests in Russia. Fullinwider, a member of the #KochBrothers’ circle of major donors—those who have given more than $1 million to #Koch-related causes—met Alfeyev through his friend Bob Foresman, head of #Barclays Capital in Russia. This select group of businessmen has unusual access to Alfeyev. In an interview for this article, Fullinwider described having dinner at Alfeyev’s private residence on a recent trip to Moscow. 'He’s a real busy guy,' says Fullinwider. 'He’s very, very hard to get in touch with unless you have a special number and you know the main guy who handles him, who’s a good friend of mine.'
"Alfeyev’s first trip to the United States paved the way for others, and in October 2012 he delivered a lecture at Villanova University, where he received an honorary degree and paid a visit to the Milwaukee-based #LyndeAndHarryBradleyFoundation. One of the largest donor organizations of its kind in the United States, the #BradleyFoundation, with more than $600 million in assets, is known for its contributions to US conservative groups like the #HeritageFoundation and the #HeartlandInstitute. But its charity isn’t limited to home: over the last four years, the foundation has given $750,000 to the St. Gregory the Theologian Charity Foundation in Moscow, a new educational and cultural initiative founded in 2009 by Alfeyev, Russian #billionaire and pharmaceutical magnate #VadimYakunin, and #LeonidSevastianov, a 35-year-old international business consultant and head of Stratinvest.ru, a consulting and public relations firm. In 2009, through Alfeyev’s charity, the Bradley Foundation donated $150,000 to support the 'Day of the Family,' a recently created Russian holiday honoring faith and fidelity. The annual event has been championed by #SvetlanaMedvedeva, wife of Prime Minister #DmitriMedvedev, a staunch #AntiAbortion advocate.
“We want to promote the idea of the unity between the West and Russia on the basis of common Christian roots,” Sevastianov told Inside the Vatican magazine in 2009. “We believe in this alliance among traditional Christian countries…and we believe that, with a united voice, we can be a strong force against the radical secular world which has become dominant in our societies.”

A pity because Los Angeles is such a beautiful city... Next wildfire: Inner Portugal?
"The new report, released Wednesday by the Climate Center, a think tank focused on California climate solutions, details how oil and gas companies and their allies used campaign donations, lobbying dollars, and legal pressure to establish a tax loophole that allows corporations to reduce their taxable state income by avoiding reporting foreign profits and losses, if the company elects to do so.
This tax loophole, called the “water’s edge election,” is California’s largest business tax break. The loophole allows corporations to avoid paying more than $4.3 billion in state corporate tax revenue each year and specifically gives oil and gas companies upward of $146 million in annual tax breaks, researchers found.
In 2023, ExxonMobil, Chevron, and Shell made more than $83 billion in profits. In 2024, Chevron announced that it would be moving its headquarters out of California but will continue operating in the state. The oil company is also one of California’s largest greenhouse gas polluters."

#Indigenous Leader #NemonteNenquimo on Fight to Defend #Ecuador’s Ban on Future #Amazon #OilExtraction
via #DemocracyNow, November 29, 2024
"In Part 2 of our special broadcast, we look at a recent victory for Indigenous communities in Ecuador, where people overwhelmingly voted to approve a referendum last year banning future oil extraction in a biodiverse section of the Amazon’s Yasuní National Park — a historic referendum result that will protect Indigenous Yasuní land from development. But the newly elected president, Daniel Noboa, has said Ecuador is at war with gang violence and that the country is 'not in the same situation as two years ago.' Noboa has said oil from the Yasuní National Park could help fund that war against drug cartels. Environmental activists and Indigenous peoples say they’re concerned about his comments because their victory had been hailed as an example of how to use the democratic process to leave fossil fuels in the ground. 'Amazonian women are at the frontlines of defense,' says Nemonte Nenquimo, an award-winning Waorani leader in the Ecuadorian Amazon who co-founded Amazon Frontlines and the Ceibo Alliance. Her recent piece for The Guardian is headlined 'Ecuador’s president won’t give up on oil drilling in the Amazon. We plan to stop him — again.' Nemonte has just published her new memoir titled We Will Be Jaguars: A Memoir of My People. We also speak with her co-author and partner, Mitch Anderson, who is the founder and executive director of Amazon Frontlines and has long worked with Indigenous nations in the Amazon to defend their rights."

"#UniversalSuicide": An imprisoned #ClimateActivist on why the fight for the planet still matters
#JustStopOil cofounder Roger Hallam spoke with Salon about overcoming climate despair and taking action
By Matthew Rozsa
Staff Writer
October 24, 2024"Many people don’t need something as dramatic as #HurricaneMilton to tell them our climate is spiraling out of control. It’s evident everywhere, from the U.K. recently reporting its second worst #harvest on record to #Antarctica turning green to the U.S. spending $150 billion a year on climate change-related #ExtremeWeather events.
"But this isn’t some mysterious crisis. We know #FossilFuel companies are responsible for the emissions heating the globe. But instead of fixing it, these corporations have lied to the public, bribed politicians and sowed distrust in science. Meanwhile, governments are giving more money than ever to fossil fuel companies via subsidies, with a record $7 trillion cashed out to #BigOil in 2022.
"Some climate activist groups would like to bring your attention to this issue. But they are often arrested and get the book thrown at them when they demonstrate. Climate activist Roger Hallam knows this all too well, as he serves a five-year prison sentence for #BlockingTraffic — and, as he explained to Salon, his plight is a warning to Americans who vote for politicians that deny climate science.
"Hallam, who described himself as a #PoliticalPrisoner, was incarcerated for his role in leading and participating in an anti-climate change demonstration in November 2022. For four days, Hallam and more than three dozen other activists climbed a gantry and thereby blocked traffic in London’s critically important #M25 motorway."

"Trump promised to scrap #climate laws if #US oil bosses donated $1bn – report
#Trump promised to 20 executives at Mar-a-Lago dinner to increase oil drilling and reverse #pollution rules among other pitches
#DonaldTrump dangled a brazen “deal” in front of some of the top US oil bosses last month, proposing that they give him $1bn for his White House re-election campaign and vowing that once back in office he would instantly tear up Joe Biden’s #environmental regulations and prevent any new ones, according to a bombshell new report.
According to the Washington Post, the former US president made his jaw-dropping pitch, which the paper described as “remarkably blunt and transactional”, at a dinner at his Mar-a-Lago home and club.
In front of more than 20 executives, including from #Chevron, #Exxon and #OccidentalPetroleum, he promised to increase oil drilling in the #GulfOfMexico, remove hurdles to drilling in the Alaskan #Arctic, and reverse new rules designed to cut car #pollution. He would also overturn the Biden administration’s decision in January to pause new natural# gas export permits which have been denounced as “climate bombs”.
“You’ll get it on the first day,” Trump said, according to the Post, citing an unnamed dinner attendee.""

It’s terrifyingly easy to sabotage our oil and gas pipeline infrastructure
An environmental activist group demonstrated the surprising ease of disrupting the North America oil and gas pipeline system. Armed with nothing more than some bolt cutters and hardhats, a group of five activists simply cut through a few chains and twisted shut the emergency valves at five different cross-border pipelines, located in four …

#StevenDonziger: The man who stood up to an oil giant, and paid the price

26 February 2020"The link between #ecological protection and #HumanRights is evident in #Ecuador’s #Amazon basin, where massive #OilPollution has destroyed #forests and #farms and left some of the world’s poorest people with #BirthDefects and a #cancer epidemic. In 1993, Ecuador’s Frente de Defensa de la Amazonía (FDA), representing 30,000 victims of #Chevron’s toxic oil waste, asked Donziger to help them win compensation for what is likely the largest oil-related human disaster in history."
