  1. A wild swing down to 37F here in #Asheville this morning, before we zoom back to the upper 80's and stay there. It's been a strange but enjoyable respite from early summer here.

Hoping the heat brings some rain as well.

Wishing everyone a good #Friday (or Saturday, depending where they are, and when they see this.)

  2. We visited one of the other 2 High Five #Coffee locations here in #Asheville today. The Man spoke to a barista he recognized from the river location (and who recognized him as well.) The fellow said they're all getting shifts at the 2 remaining cafe's and that they will definitely rebuild.

He also said the owner was thinking about bringing in a coffee truck there in the meantime, which we enthusiastically supported.

The Man gave him a large tip, and told him we'd supported them via the GoFundMe, and we hoped they'd be ok in the meantime.

So, hope for all, I guess.

  3. Ok, I am now wondering who at the state level was compensated for approving Mission Hospital getting the extra beds 4 systems were applying for.

HCA has been cited 4 times since they bought our non-profit hospital system for failing to keep patients safe, and THEY were awarded the 129 new beds?

And this was in their CON:

Increase capacity by 12% but staffing by less than 4%?

Not enough that their initial purchase was incredibly fraught, but we're doing this now, as well?

  4. We went for a drive along the #BRP west of #Asheville today, and it was one of our best ever. While 72F and overcast at home (2160') by the time we got to our favorite Roy Taylor Overlook (5580') it was a gorgeous blue sky, quite windy and 60F.

I thought we'd be seeing fully leafed-out trees, but at this elevation most of the trees had just barely begun, a good month-plus behind ours.

It was like Second Spring, and absolutely beautiful. This is one of my favorite spots, and the tourists today just swooped through the parking area, and never got out to go look at the overlook.

  9. The standard Fox News fare of BS and partisan slurs over reality apparently targeted #Asheville a week or so ago and I had missed it.

They did manage to talk only to Republicans.

Today, the #AVLWatchdog had a pretty good rejoinder, including the fact that one of the Repubs they had interviewed is not only running for Governor, but also the head of Trump's FEMA, which should be providing funds for the area to recover after Helene:

  15. I shot a few rolls and sheets of #IlfordFP4 over the last few weeks, so I'm finally ready for a few entries for #FP4Party.

I'll start with a shot from my #Graflex in/near #Asheville. This particular shot was from an overlook on the #BlueRidgeParkway heading toward Craggy Gardens. Shot with a red filter. The 3000 px resolution doesn't do it justice…zooming in on the treeline on the full 4x5 scan is awesome. I've included a snippet of a screenshot as an example.

  20. A great video from the #AVLWatchdog on one of the deaths at Mission Hospital since HCA purchased the system in 2019.

No one is blaming the nurses. This is all down to HCA and their abysmal cost-cutting, leaving untrained, and badly over-loaded staff caring for very sick patients.

Our city's independent bookstore needs your help!

My local anticapitalist, antifascist, LGBTQIA+ friendly, anarchist, super ultra crunchy, cooperatively owned, and self described "radical bookstore" is falling on tough times.

Hurricane Helene was a doozy y'all, a ton of small businesses like this are closing with no plans on reopening. The FEMA payments meant to help Asheville and WNC are being bogged down in a bunch of red tape, so many of us haven't seen a dime of them yet, even though some of it is earmarked to help small business. And, although tourism is coming back (and we're very very open for business!) the shock to the system was just too big for a lot of folks.

I've seen long-standing cornerstorne-of-the-neighborhood places just like this wink out of existence without any warning, only to be replaced by exploitative, soul-sucking corporate owned chains run by people who don't even live or pay their taxes in our community. I don't want to keep seeing this happen to the town I grew up in.

These are good people who provide an essential service to our city: being some of the loudest, most outspoken defenders of our human rights, and providing civic minded reading material you won't find anywhere else.

They sell books other people don't want you to read, and that generally means those are books you're obligated to read.

Also, they once hosted the backroom of their bookstore out as a viewing space for a no-budget student film I helped make like a decade ago and they were real cool about it so-long-as everyone we invited to the screening bought a coffee or a book. Do you think Barnes & Nobel would do that? Would Amazon?

Check 'em out! Buy a banned book! Become a sustaining member of one of the best independent bookstores around!

  22. You have GOT to be kidding me.

Mission Hospital in #Asheville snagged the 95 extra beds the state was awarding to the area, even after countless failures of HCA to effectively run this system.

We had 3 other systems vying for these beds, and at least 100 people at the community meeting when we got to talk about which group should be awarded the beds.

This is the worst possible outcome.

  24. Our 2023 Road Trip #20: Appetites for Asheville

Previously on Midlife Crisis Crossover: Every year since 1999 Anne and I have taken one road trip to a different part of the United States and seen attractions, wonders, and events we didn’t have back home. From 1999 to 2003 we did so as best friends; from 2004 to the present, as husband and wife. After years of contenting ourselves with everyday life in Indianapolis and any nearby places that also had comics and toy shops, we overcame some of our self-imposed limitations and resolved as a team to leave the comforts of home for annual chances to see creative, exciting, breathtaking, outlandish, historical, and/or bewildering new sights in states beyond our own. We’re the Goldens. This is who we are and what we do. For 2023 it was time at last to venture to the Carolinas, the only southern states we hadn't yet visited... ...which are now crossed off our list. We enjoyed our stroll around downtown Asheville, North Carolina, though we had no idea of the dark events in its future. At the time, all we know is we had fun and found quite a few eateries to our liking -- two local establishments and one eastern-U.S. chain we'd never encountered before. After Hurricane Helene hit in September 2024 their staffs scattered to the four winds as they had to seek refuge elsewhere until things got better. More than one of them had GoFundMe campaigns going for a time while they waited weeks for power and water to be reconnected. As of March 2026 I'm happy to see all three are still going strong today. 25. We don’t live in bear central AKA Buncombe county. But. Something knocked some of our bird feeders over last night.

Maybe an ambitious raccoon or opossum was climbing up the porch railing. Or. Maybe a bear found it confusing and left before messing with everything on the porch.

Bringing in the feeders for the evening seems prudent.

People neighbor’s trash can was dumped, so, it looks like our bear neighbors are back with for the summer. They’re rough. But quiet.

  26. Volunteered with the Kenilworth Conservation Cooperative to plant native trees and shrubs in Seven Springs Park here in Asheville today.

  27. An excellent #AVLWatchdog article about the challenges our trail system are still facing, almost 18 months after hurricane Helene. The extraordinary work of volunteers is ongoing, as is the hugely increased risks of wildfire and property damage.

Thank you to everyone who does this kind of work anywhere in the world, so others can enjoy the beautiful spaces.
