What is #AlboPM up to…? Richard Denniss has some answer, and a warning for him, here:
“It was no accident that Labor waited until after the 2025 election to announce its support for the massive North West Shelf gas project, just as it was no accident that Labor waited until after the 2022 election to announce $1.9 billion worth of taxpayer subsidies for the Middle Arm gas project in Darwin. Labor keeps betting that voters will forgive and forget their support for fossil fuels expansion, but while that might work nationwide, it’s far less likely to work in the inner-city seats Labor is hanging on to by the skin of their teeth.”

And it takes an fossil fuel scarcity threat/event pushing up bowser prices (#Greed and #Grifting) for govt(s) to do the bleeding obvious in terms of ‘emissions’ climate action and public welfare !!! I guess this cannot occur when the #FossilFuelIndustries are in control of the narrative. It also depends on the severity of pocket nerve shock that the electorate will tolerate before politicians act in opposition to Corporate dictat and influential #NeoLiberal economics wonks.Funny world eh?

The Minns #labor govt is still committed to #RoadUser charges for #BEVs and #Hybrid #EVs. A flawed tax policy IMHO. I do not yet own an BEV but this road tax is a sure disinsentive to buy one at a time when all govts ought to insentivise EVs like crazy.
I calculated that it would cost me over $500 a year in tax to run an EV under that policy (not counting servicing the vehicle, charging expenses, tyres, registration, insurance, etc.) while ammortising what is still an expensive vehicle over the life of the battery (about 10 yrs or a little more).
The loss of fuel tax (do States get a cut of this?) can easily be made up with higher taxes on #FossilFuelIndustries. We need to phase most of them out of the economy anyway.
This is supposed to be a #Labor govt… it’s not. It’s as neoliberal as the #LNP was 6 years ago and still supporting #FossilFuel despite the rhetoric on #Electrification.
“Minns said the government remained committed to its road user charge, set for July 2027, putting a fee of 2.97 cents a kilometre for an EV and 2.37c/km for a plug-in hybrid.” (Source: The Guardian)

“Guardian Australia has spoken with several other Labor MPs who believe there is support within caucus for the change.
One Labor MP, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said, “I’m getting a lot of heat and I think David Pocock’s run a pretty good campaign on this.”
A ‘campaign’??? Yes, as far as politicians are concerned, it boils down to #electionability and nothing else. Never mind that what #SenDavidPocock has done (along with the #AustraliaInstitute) is to shed light on the #GasExport #Rort and that everyday Australians are paying for the outragous #Profits #Corporate gas companies are making (not to speak of the #Japanese #onselling of Australian gas - the Australian cow that keeps giving away free milk).
“They [unnamed Labor politicians] said reform on gas export taxes in the budget was important, but said Labor would have to go harder on gas companies than the current PRRT, or there would “not be much point”.
As well they should. ‘Bout time Labor did something that requires #gumption IMO. Go fast, go hard. Ignore #FossilFuelINdustries bleeting noises, it’s all #lies and #disinformation in any case.

Further to my last toot, “The Chamber of Minerals and Energy WA said Australia had been shielded from international gas shocks because investors saw the country as a “stable, reliable place to invest”.
The chamber’s chief executive officer, Aaron Morey, said the proposed tax would risk “undermining that reputation and damaging the living standards of future generations of Australians”.
“At exactly the moment we need more gas, not less, this would dramatically escalate sovereign risk,”
1) We don’t need more gas we just need a Domestic reserve (To stop the bastards selling all of it off at record profits
2) Denmark taxes their gas industries to a level that would make Fossil Fuel exec cry in public, yet the investment still came and no operator quit the sector.
3) The #Fuel and #Gas Industries employ less than 28,000 full time jobs combined (Source: Australian Institure and ABS). The #FossilFuelIndustries are not the most important job creators, ever and their push for automation underscores that fact.
4) Australia is a stable and trusted investment recipiant because of its democratic institutions, not because Executives say so./end_of_rant. I think…

"Fossil fuel interests in the classroom
Branch said there have been "systematic attempts to provide teachers with misinformation about climate change in the hopes they will relate it to their students," with material coming from "very strongly ideologically motivated" climate change denial think tanks, such as the Heartland Institute, as well as from the fossil fuel industry itself."
Hunger for #climateliteracy easily fed with misinformation from #fossilfuelindustries
https://p.dw.com/p/52eO8 -
“"AEP, [Australian Energy Producers — peak lobby for #FossilFuelIndustries ] with the support of EY [Consultants to AEP], produced sophisticated disinformation that misled policymakers and influenced the national climate strategy to expand gas production, and delay the energy transition under the guise of credible analysis," said Claire Synder, the director of Climate Integrity.” (Source: ABC News)
Who would’ve known? The Govt and bureaucrats receiving the AEP’s advice to keep/build Gas Peakers on the electricity grid to support the transition to ‘green energy’ certainly would have seen it coming. They’d have to have been blind and stupid not to. Hence, the conclusion has to be that govt support for continued fossil fuel use (in terms of ‘natural’ - being anything but - gas extraction and combustion) must be intentional and in keeping with the #GasLobby ‘s wishes. Not only is our #Labor govt purposefully inactive on the #ClimateAction and #Environmental left-wing agenda, it is actively funnelling #PublicFunds to #Grifting fossil fuels #Corporations which pay #NoTaxes and piddly #Royalties.
I’m not a conspiracy theory advocate, but this sure looks like #Corruption, #Collusion and #NestFethering activities if I’ve ever seen any.
All the while, any ‘new’ gas fields developed in Australia will be exported to fulfil contracted gas futures (which are then re-sold at a profit on the international market by #Japan - a lucrative business all round).

@willie1foot
I really don’t wish to disparage the QLD electorate, but good gracious people… you voted for this bunch of nitwit and their anti-renewables coterie of #FossilFuelIndustries mates , and that makes your electorate a picture of illiterate and misinformed idiots as far as I am concerned. Sorry (for those who didn’t vote for them)… not sorry. And why isn’t the following blasted all over MSM?
“The Crisafulli government has outlined a new five-year energy plan for the state that will focus on propping up its coal plants, investing in new gas power and pushing ahead with select pumped hydro projects.’
-
With one of the closing paragraphs:
“What is in our “national interest” is similarly incoherent in regards to tax revenue. Australia taxes its massive gas exports weakly, and it’s hard to see how we would get a worse deal from a foreign owned company compared to an Australian one.”John Quiggin neatly summarises what is wrong with foreign ownership decisions taken by our govt. While the bidding entity for #Santos is Middle Eastern private equity (and private equity entities have a reputation for pillage and fire sales), the real issue with any take-over must be PRRT and other tax related incentives afforded #FossilFuelIndustries.
As @johnquiggin correctly points out… don’t expect our govt to make the urgent and necessary (implied national security issue) changes to the Australian tax regime. Ho hum… down with the climate we go… let’s burn some more carbon and help us all along to hell on earth.

@berniethewordsmith but also, politicians and political parties (and media) who are prepared to take money from the #FossilFuelIndustries and the #Billionaire are not your friends. Today's result is absolutely as much the fault of the #Democrats as it is of #Trump – they were serving the same masters and therefore could not present a clear and compelling alternative.
