The logic he uses, "today's British taxpayers should not be held financially responsible for the injustices committed centuries ago", is the same logic that every white liberal, regardless of their political leaning, has used to justify their complicity in today's injustices as well. Apparently, the past is supposed to stay in the past, even when its consequences remain very much present.
It's the same shit the Dutch govt used to refuse reparations, lmao. Yet, did you know Indonesia had to pay a debt to the Dutch for declaring independence, with payments continuing until 2003? The audacity of the cvntiest cvnt.
Not only did Indonesia have to adopt the nation-state as the only "legitimate" polity for self-determination, but it also had to pay its former coloniser for independence. The Dutch even asked the US to put pressure on Indonesia to pay the debt. Yet, decades later, they still had the nerve to feel victimised by "masa bersiap".
If only you had seen us as people and had not claimed what wasn't yours to begin with.........
I can tell that some white people "love" appealing to common sense and invoking human rights. The problem with that is that what you call common sense is only common because your rulers made it so, and the human rights you invoke only count when your own rights are at stake, while ours are never included.
So you see, we know that people in the Global South are not always "people" to the rest of you. Our humanity has always been conditional, and the supposed universality of human rights somehow stops applying when it comes to us.
And yet, we're expected to simply move on. Expecting postcolonial societies and African people to just get over transatlantic slavery and European imperialism, while refusing to acknowledge and address their continuing consequences, is practically asking for another "masa bersiap" to happen, I guess. Idk, idk, js 🤷🏻♀️
It's really hard for me, personally, to feel bad about "masa bersiap". I guess the Dutch shouldn't have colonised and enslaved Indonesians for 350+ years. Idk 🤷🏻♀️ If you want to feel victimised so badly, then use that "masa bersiap", I guess.
Tell the world what Indonesians did after claiming independence following 350+ years of Dutch colonialism, warn the Brits. Pay the reparations, dudeeeee.
