We spent the night in Albertville, in a huge hotel complex that we suspected was associated with the 1992 Winter Olympics. Next on the list: The Col des Cyclotouristes. Hard to skip a pass with such a name! From a connectivity perspective it's not very useful, which meant we had it practically to ourselves (no other cyclotouristes either). On the descent both Ben and I literally gasped when we turned around a corner and Mont Blanc appeared towering in the distance.

I had a plan for the next day: The Col de la Madeleine would be the pass for the day. But we'd approach it through the back door, via the switchbacks of the Lacets de Vernier, then the Col du Chaussy, and take a gravel road to near the top of the Madeleine. Well, that didn't work out: There was road work on the Lacets de Vernier. So we took the main approach to the Madeleine. I ended up chatting with a nice Swiss cyclists for the last half hour of the climb.
