Day 12: Termoli - Apricena
↔️ 63.3 km ↗️ 570 m
Hilly inland leg today. Reaching Apricena sets me up to cycle around the edge of the Gargano peninsula in the next 3 days.
Apricena is a small town away from the sea and therefore the least touristic place I've visited so far on this trip. Not that much to see, but still fun to soak in Italian small town life. I wish we had the town square culture that exists here back home too.

The next day we had the rare experience of starting the day with a flat stretch. We followed the Romanche river to the base of the Col de la Morte. That is a long ascent with just over 1000 m of climbing. It didn't feel that bad though, as we had company from a local who had just started a crazy 300-km-and-who-knows-how-many-passes day ride that he anticipated finishing sometime at 3 am. He just rode and chatted with us with well over half an hour.

Our hotel was in a suburb of Grenoble. Grenoble is the kind of city where even slightly run down suburbs look awesome because there's always the backdrop of the surrounding mountains.

The gorge was awesome, but we didn't enjoy the second half of the climb to the Col de Porte too much. We probably rode a bit too fast (Ben was trying to keep up with two Brits on road bikes and I was trying to keep up with Ben). By the time we got to the pass, I was feeling meh. BUT: Then we had an absolutely amazing descent into Grenoble that lifted my spirits again. Another day completed.

It was small and steep enough that I worried if this really was where we were supposed to go. It was. It leads into the Guiers vif gorge. We didn't descend all too far from the Col du Granier (but I was grinning the whole time because it was fast, smooth, and beautiful). Rather than continuing south in the valley, we added in another pass, the Col de la Cluse. Less than 400 meters of climbing and hardly any traffic.

Chambery was a fun city to stay in. I had a bit of time to walk around in the evening. The streets were bustling with activity. The next morning, we started the day climbing Col du Granier. It was a good pass to ride. Not too step, a cool tunnel, and great views of Mont Granier and its surroundings.
