  1. Day 11: Vasto - Termoli

    ↔️ 39.7 km ↗️ 180 m

Ominous thunderstorm clouds in the distance today but I managed to dodge the rain once more.
Termoli has a cute walled historic centre overlooking the sea.

  5. The descent from the Crêt de Chatillon was cold! We should have put on more layers. By the time we were in the valley, both of us were literally shivering. We stopped at a roadside stand for fresh fries, which slowly brought some warmth back. The second climb of the day was the Col de Plainpalais. This one was much easier and on very scenic and quiet back roads. And the descent into Chambery, where we spent the night, was a lot warmer.

  10. We started climbing from Annecy immediately, toward the Semnoz/Crêt de Chatillon -- no warmup. It was sunny in the valley but the clouds were still hanging low over the mountain. It's a long and strenuous climb, gaining well over 1000 meters of elevation.

  15. The hotel options in Annecy were limited by the time we booked, and so we ended up getting a fairly expensive place right in the old town. Because we got in so late, we couldn't make the best use of it in the evening, but in the morning it was nice to start from such a picturesque location.

  20. Another advantage of travelling during off-season: You can usually check into a hotel super early because the workload for the staff is so low. #biketouring #bikepacking #nerdiontour

  23. The Col des Pitons was the highest point of the day, and there it really was raining. We suited up accordingly for the descent toward Annecy, where we spent the night.

  28. Now that I'm back and have recovered a little, I'll start posting pics from our #BikeTouring trip through the French Alps. We got a late afternoon start from Geneva and rode up the Saléve. This photo is after the high point and on the way to the Col des Pitons. It had rained early in the day and the top of the mountain was still shrouded on low-hanging clouds.

  33. Day 10: Pescara - Vasto

    ↔️ 63.7 km ↗️ 240 m

Today's leg had a bit of everything: Beautiful pristine seaside cycle path on a former railway alignment, a main road with 70 km/h speed limit and an almost completely overgrown back road.
Vasto is a cute town on a hill overlooking the sea. A beautiful little historic centre including a 15th century castle despite a huge landslide in 1956 which destroyed part of the city.
