  1. Day 2: Imola - Ravenna

    ↔️ 53.9 km ↗️ 15m

Today I reached the Adriatic coast. Luckily it only started raining after I arrived in Ravenna. It made for a wet exploration of the city, but some nice moody pictures and even a rainbow when it started clearing up!

  2. Here's a question to those with detailed knowledge about traffic rules in Italy: As a bicyclist am I allowed to cycle here?

In Switzerland, the red circle is a "general driving prohibition". It means you cannot drive, on any vehicle. The only thing allowed here is walking (ignoring the qualifiers below the sign).

My theory is that generally, this is different in Italy, as in, this sign does not apply to cyclists. Or at least it isn't enforced at all?

  3. I also came across two obstacles today:

The first one is a river crossing with a very sandy overgrown bank. Practically impossible to traverse. Apparently this is part of a mountain bike route and a bicycle route on OSM. I can't imagine this being fun to traverse even by mountain bike. So I edited OSM to make this bit impassable.

The second one is a blocked road. I squeezed past the gate and only one of the three workers looked at me irritatedly...

  6. Day 1: Bologna - Imola

    ↔️ 55.3 km ↗️ 24m

Easy first leg of the trip. Separated bicycle lanes for the first 10km or so leaving Bologna, cool! Too narrow at times and not in the best shape maintenance-wise, but seems to be used by a lot of cyclists of all kinds!
Imola seems to be quite a sleepy unspectacular town, though that could also have to do with the thunderstorms of today. Makes me wonder what it would be like on a Formula 1 race weekend.

  9. Day 0

More Bologna: The porticoes (arched walkways) remind me of Bern (they are also a UNESCO world heritage). Apparently there is a tram under construction, unfortunately not running yet. Public transport is definitely an area where this city can improve a lot. Also, the city centre is lacking green spaces. There's hardly a tree to be found. Overall, highly recommend it though. But visit when it's cooler...

  14. One of the best photo / cycling books I’d not heard of until a friend lent me his copy.

  19. Day -1

Bologna: Impressive historic centre with big old medieval towers, the usual big churches and the oldest university in the world (the "original" university).

  20. Alright, I think I have all my bike touring stuff assembled! A few items not shown because they are at my parents.

  21. Dat 4: Continued along the coast, on a small road up to Bandon and the back to Hwy 101. Got some nice views at state parks along the shore. Got a motel in Port Orford because there was big rain predicted.

  22. I did a final review of our tentative route through the French Alps. One week from now, we'll depart Geneva! bkrtr.de/5KerO I think the route may be a bit overambitious, but there are plenty of options for cutting out some of the climbing and distance.

Question for the @bikerouter pros: Is there a function to split up an existing route into shorter segments? I didn't see anything in the documentation.

  23. Less than a week before I head out for a bike tour in the French Alps. Which provided some extra motivation to finish editing another video from our 2024 trip. Day 8 was the shortest day in terms of distance but nonetheless had highlights like the Passo di Pura and the Sauris reservoir and valley. Just amazing stuff. youtube.com/watch?v=rb-7hQOUL70

  24. First night out on my trip to Reno.. Found a sweet campsite in the Siuslaw National Forest, off a closed-to-motor-vehicles road.

  26. Gravel road perfection. The groads of Rensselaer County NY are phenomenal. Mostly low traffic class 1 gravel through rural areas dotted with farms. The terrain isn't too steep but you will get some short 20% climbs. It's punchy to say the least.
