  1. So, I spent a LOT of my childhood playing in a "swamp" -- wetlands and woods near my childhood home, which included a #BeaverDam. Part of the area was an abandoned quarry and sandpit owned by Brock Industries. Once the quarry was posted, the area was able to return to its wild state. I was pleased to find out that the area was sold to a #LandTrust, and the old entrance to the sandpit is now the trailhead for the #BrandyBrowForest! I'm hoping something similar can happen with a local sandpit near conservation lands here in Southern Maine. I'm working on it!

Let’s Hike Haverhill - Brandy Brow Forest - Myron's Road Trailhead

"Using funds from the Drinking Water Supply Protection Program, in 2025 the city purchased and protected 41-acres as part of the larger 600-acre Brandy Brow Forest. Shortly after the purchase, the Myron's Rd Trailhead was created.

City of Haverhill DPW Director Bob Ward will guide us through this vast area where the trails are mostly flat. We'll visit a 5-foot tall beaver dam along the way! "

Opening day was this past May, 2026!

  3. Beavers do far more than build dams: These 20-kilogram rodents create wetlands, raise groundwater and lock away carbon |

Beavers may weigh only around 20 kilograms, but their engineering skills can reshape entire landscapes. Using little more…

  4. Estimating Increased Transient Water Storage With Increases In Beaver Dam Activity

“Dam building by beaver (Castor spp.) slows water movement through montane valleys, increasing transient water storage and the diversity of residence times. In some cases, water storage created by beaver dam construction is correlated to changes in streamflow magnitude and timing. However, the total amount of additional surface and groundwater storage that beaver dams may create (and, thus, their maximum potential impact on streamflow) has not been contextualized in the water balance of larger river basins..."

  6. Last summer I was asked if i had any ideas on how to improve analog beaver dams built as a stream enhancement project. Analog dams are human built, these weren't functioning as well as they could and blowing out. (We implemented some beaver like improvements to the dams which are holding up better) I got kind of addicted to watching youtubes of beavers building dams.
This rescued baby beaver knows exactly what to do.

#BeaverDams slow precipitation runoff and stores water in ponds allowing it to slowly seep into the soil, providing summertime moisture. Montana 🇺🇸 is becoming parched in the summer and now people are creating beaver dams to help build up a water supply. #MotherNatureKnowsBest ‼️
