"About this trip:
Rest and Recharge is an event for folks who take part in #CommunityCare work who are looking for rest and connection.
KC is committed to creating programming that is responsive to our community. We’ve heard from folks who are deep in local community care work that they are exhausted, overwhelmed and struggle to find time to rest. In collaboration with #MCHT , we put together two day events inviting organizers to be with the land and seek rest/play. Join us for the second of these events on October 10th in the Belfast area (specific location provided after registration). #DanielleArroyo and #DaeneKugel will hold this space and offer a guided #NatureWalk and optional #crafting projects. Music and vibes courtesy of Kafari. Lunch will be provided.
Who is a community care worker?
Someone who spends time doing work (for pay or not) that supports the people in our community who need it most. This includes but is not limited to:

This gentle shoreline walk will centre sandpipers and the many winged travellers who rest and refuel at Boundary Bay on their incredible journeys. Expect communal watching, storytelling, and an appreciation of small movements—of wings, tides, and time. Whether you’re a long-time birder or just getting started, this event is grounded in care, connection, and curiosity.

• Sandpiper identification tips and shared observations
• Inclusive, welcoming scenes for all experience levels
• Binoculars & scopes to borrow

Who We Are

8:00 am - 10:00 am"Join us for a weekly bird walk at Gilsland Farm, led by #MaineAudubon’s Staff Naturalist #DougHitchcox and others. Meet in the parking lot, in front of the Visitor Center, where we’ll begin a slow walk around the property to look and listen for birds using Gilsland’s diverse habitats. Free, no registration required.
The walk typically covers between 1 to 2 miles (1.5 – 3 km). Waterproof shoes are recommended as the paths can be damp with dew in the mornings and icy when frozen. Please bring your binoculars, but we do have extra pairs if you need them, just ask Doug when you arrive.

But when #NiiyokamigaabawDeondreSmiles gives their students advice on what to do about it, one of the things they recommend is to simply go for a #walk. Smiles is an assistant professor of geography at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, and a leader in the field of Indigenous geography.
"They are a citizen of the #LeechLakeBand of #Ojibewe, and they research how #IndigenousPeople have cultivated relationships with the land that are #ceremonial, historic — and ever #evolving, including in the wake of climate change.
"As #colonial governments engage with #traditional #ecological knowledge more seriously, Smiles’ work is a timely reminder of how seemingly small changes to your routine can have a big impact on your point of view. Indigenous geography offers a stark contrast to a worldview based on #extraction and #exploitation.
"Many societies have cataloged the world around them to make maps and meaning out of the land, but colonial ways of contextualizing the world have also often utilized geography as a way to divide and sequester land from Indigenous peoples."
