“Autumn Trees, Canyon Wall” — A small grove of autumn cottonwood trees next to the wall of an Utah canyon.
A few years ago three of us explored a long section of narrow canyon in Utah, looking for photographs in this rich landscape. We started in a broad valley where a stream flowed between low hills, but soon the walls rose and steepened and the valley narrowed, and we found ourselves following a creek. The canyon was alternately wide and then narrow and constricted…more: https://gdanmitchell.com/2026/05/14/autumn-trees-canyon-wall/

“Imaginary Landscape — Brown” — An imaginary landscape based on materials from the desert.
This imaginary landscape — an image produced by manipulating photographic materials — riffs on the subject of playa mud. Here the semi-circular forms in the lower 2/3 of the frame interested me, obviously along with the shapes and textures of the dried mud… more: https://gdanmitchell.com/2026/05/13/imaginary-landscape-brown/

Good morning. 🐟🐡🐟
13 May 2026
This is our final day in Arkansas. Tomorrow morning we’ll head out to Oklahoma City, where we’ll park for a couple of days before heading home.
I’ve grown pretty fond of Holiday Inn Express—if for nothing else, those nifty coffee machines in the dining area that grind the beans and brew a single cup, available 24/7. Pro‑tip: fill a vacuum mug instead of using the paper cups. The coffee stays hot longer and somehow tastes better. My vacuum mug holds two full brewing cycles from those machines.
That said, Marriott’s Courtyard hotels have The Bistro, which serves Starbucks coffee. The downside is that The Bistro isn’t open 24/7, and when it is open, you pay Starbucks prices for Starbucks coffee. There are the little in‑room coffee machines, of course, but as a novice coffee snob, I avoid those unless there’s absolutely no other option.
Breakfast is my second consideration. Holiday Inn Express has a morning buffet and always puts out omelets, which are a favorite of mine. They seem to alternate between egg‑white omelets and cheese omelets, and either one gets the job done.
Marriott’s Fairfield Inns also offer breakfast buffets that are pretty good. They sometimes serve the little omelets, but more often it’s scrambled eggs. Once again, where Holiday Inn Express beats Fairfield is the coffee setup. Fairfield brews coffee in the morning and puts it out in those big vacuum dispensers.
Honestly, in the past, I’ve tended to gravitate toward Marriott hotels when traveling. But going forward, I think I’ll be choosing Holiday Inn Express instead.

“Aeolian Bedforms” — Wind-caused ripples in desert sand dunes, Death Valley.
This is probably the classic notion of what a desert looks like — fields of wind-formed sand dunes stretching into the distance. In truth, such dunes typically cover only a very small fraction of the desert landscape. That’s certainly true in Death Valley National Park, where large, impressive dunes are only found in a handful of locations. We visited one of them on the final morning of our late February trip…more: https://gdanmitchell.com/2026/05/12/aeolian_bedforms/

Synchronized Soaring
There are six pigeons flying from right to left across a bright blue sky. They’re loosely arranged in two smaller groups — three birds leading in front and three following just behind — all moving together with an easy, natural rhythm.
If you're a fan of stunning dove imagery, be sure to explore my photo gallery for a collection of beautiful snapshots that capture their elegance and charm.

Good evening. 🍄🟫🍄🟫🍄🟫
9 May 2026
We’d been on the road all day, and now we’re tucked into northern Arkansas, deep in the Ozark Mountains. After we arrived, we went out to dinner with my daughter and granddaughters. Then they headed off to do a little shopping for the upcoming graduation party. I think I mentioned a few days ago that one of my granddaughters is graduating from college this month. She’ll be teaching kindergarten in North Little Rock once she’s officially done.
The drive itself was pretty uneventful. Most of it was interstate, and my modern car handled the bulk of the work with its hands‑free driving feature. I still had to sit there and keep an eye on things, of course — take over when the car insisted, tell it when to change lanes, and handle the turns. The thing can be a little sassy. Once we left the interstate, it was back to doing everything myself.
Somewhere along the way, I started thinking about how far things have come since I was a young man. My cars back then didn’t have power steering or A/C — unless you count that little triangular vent window you could angle so the wind hit you in the face. And for heaven’s sake, I had to roll the windows up and down with a hand crank. Don’t even get me started on navigation.
Anyway, that’s enough for today. Time to kick back.

No‑Nonsense Oriole
I was spotted by this rather stern‑looking Baltimore Oriole (Icterus galbula). He seemed distinctly unimpressed with the bird feed I’d put out. A few minutes after taking the photo, I peeled an orange and set out the slices, which quickly attracted a few other orioles.
Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

Good morning. 🍄🍄🍄
3 May 2026
I just finished my latest read, Strip Tease by Carl Hiaasen. I find his books hilarious, and this one is no exception. Like all his stories, it’s rooted firmly in Florida. The main character, Erin Grant, is a former FBI secretary who loses her job after her ex‑husband — a perpetually drugged, wheelchair‑stealing mess — gets arrested. To support herself and her daughter, she takes a job dancing at a gentleman’s club.
One night, a drunken congressman, David Dilbeck, jumps onstage and starts beating a customer with a champagne bottle. That single moment sets off a chain reaction of blackmail threats, murder, and a parade of slippery, bumbling criminals and political fixers. Meanwhile, Erin’s inept, scheming ex‑husband is determined to keep custody of their daughter, despite being the last person who should.
Overall, I thought the book was a lot of fun.
“Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedies.” — Groucho Marx
“Never underestimate the power of human stupidity.” — Robert A. Heinlein
“A strong woman looks a challenge in the eye and gives it a wink.” — Gina Carey
“Reality continues to ruin my life.” — Bill Watterson

The Bayou
This is a photo of a quiet waterway in the bayous of Sabine National Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana, USA. A tranquil channel of water reflects the soft blue sky and scattered white clouds above. Tall, dense stands of golden‑brown reeds and grasses rise on both sides of the channel, reaching upward like weathered sentinels. In the far distance, the scene tapers toward a line of trees that marks the edge of the marsh.
My photo gallery features over 1700 carefully selected images. While most are chosen for their visual appeal, a few stand out as novelty shots. Feel free to explore my gallery at:

Good morning. 🌅🌊🍵
29 April 2026
We’re doing a little traveling in May. We’ll head up to Arkansas to watch our granddaughter graduate from college, then turn west into Oklahoma to meet our newest great‑granddaughter. It’s not a huge trip—maybe three days of driving altogether—mixed with “camping out” in hotels. And honestly, the hotel life is something we enjoy now and then. There’s a certain rugged adventure in surviving the Holiday Inn Express, the Marriott, or the Sheraton, where only the truly hardened can endure.
It’s a strange moment when you realize you’re old enough to be a great‑grandparent. It hits with that “oh my, what happened” feeling. One day you’re fine, and the next—boom—you’re ancient. You’re still here, of course, but you’re no longer part of the machinery that keeps society running. That’s all been handed off to younger generations, except for the few of us who refuse to step aside quietly. Instead, we keep inserting ourselves into the fray until the end, dragging as many people with us as possible. Do I really believe that? Probably not entirely—but that’s what came out. It’s complicated.
In stories and shows, you never see a group of seventy‑somethings working in an office or partying until dawn. Well, except for The Golden Girls. People in their seventies and eighties have appointments and regimens to keep. Speaking of which, I need to make sure I have enough meds for the trip. 😂

This is a female ruby-throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris), although, rufus humming bird is a possibility as well. But I know I know that there is a male ruby-throated hummingbird around and it being spring and all, well ...
Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

Good morning. 😴⏰☕
27 April 2026
I really need to get moving, but I’m in a full‑blown Monday‑morning mood. You know the one—when you just sit there staring into space. The truth is, I don’t actually need Monday for that; I can manage it on pretty much any day of the week. I do try to keep my mouth closed during these Monday‑morning trances, because staring off into nothing with your jaw hanging open isn’t a great look. There’s always the risk of a little dribble sneaking out of the corner, too. That’s just… well… yuck. Especially if you’re at work or out in public. Luckily, I don’t go to work anymore, and I’m not out in public much, so most of my staring is done from my recliner. If I kick back, it just looks like I’m resting. And if I close my eyes… well… everyone’s fooled. 💤
When I do lean back with my eyes closed, my dog Charlie usually curls up on the end of the couch and joins me in his own version of the Monday‑morning trance. But if I risk even a tiny glance in his direction, I’ll often catch him staring right at me. I have to be careful with that maneuver, because the slightest eye‑flutter is his signal that it’s time to get up and get moving. The moment he thinks I’m awake, he jumps down and becomes relentless in his campaign to get me on my feet. At that point, he’s ready to go outside. His patience is almost absolute—right up until he notices the smallest twitch. Then it’s time to sound the alarm: Get up, get up, it’s time to go. He says all of that without actual words, of course. Still, I understand him perfectly. 🐶
