  1. Good morning. 🦢🪿🦆

    28 May 2026

I stopped by the pharmacy on post yesterday afternoon to pick up a resupply of meds. There was a short line at the pickup counter, mostly older retirees like me. If they’re anything like I am, it’s probably the only reason they still come to Fort Polk.

I noticed—again—that many of them wore baseball caps covered in military regalia, often with their retired rank pinned somewhere on the front. Over the years I’ve come to think of that whole setup as the ‘pharmacy hat.’ It’s an identity marker, a way of saying I served, even though standing in an Army hospital should be clue enough.

Every now and then I even see someone in the full hat‑and‑vest combo, both pieces covered in patches and pins. I’m not criticizing—just observing. There’s nothing wrong with being proud of spending most of your working life in service to the nation.

I usually wear a baseball cap myself when I go out, one with the letters LA on the front. That’s its own kind of identity signal: it says I cheer for the Los Angeles Dodgers and hints that I’m originally from California—which I am.

And yes, I truly do understand their need to be recognized. For twenty or thirty years they lived immersed in a culture that became the only world they really knew. Then, in what feels like the blink of an eye, they found themselves on the outside looking in—no longer part of the team. It’s quite a transition, and we all handle it differently.

After a lifetime of knowing exactly what to wear, a person is suddenly left wondering, maybe for the first time, what do I put on now?

  2. Where do you keep your eggs? In your underpants, of course!

  14. 🇫🇷 Il va faire chaud aujourd'hui, un temps à être au bord ou sur l'eau comme ces colverts. 🙂

    Passez une belle journée. 👋

🇬🇧 It's going to be hot today, perfect weather to be near or on the water like those two mallards. 🙂

    Have a nice day. 👋

  17. Just saw two double crested cormorants. They were swimming in the lake and then took off. They circled the lake, gaining altitude with each lap, and then landed in a tree about 40 yards away.

    They did this 3-4 times.

Here’s a shitty pic of what I assume is a juvi.

    Correct me if I misidentified.

  22. We have apparently attracted a pair of ducks, they laid eggs next to our front door.

My wife had to stick a sign on our door that says “beware of the the nesting ducks” to warn delivery drivers.
