Ruby in the Air

At times I sit out on the porch with my dog Charlie and watch the hummingbird wars as they vie for a seat at the feeder. It’s a tiny battleground — dive‑bombs, sharp turns, and the occasional mid‑air standoff — all over a few drops of sugar water.

This image of a little male ruby‑throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) is one I took years ago. Every time I look at it, I can almost hear the faint buzz of his wings and remember those porch mornings with Charlie, both of us watching the drama unfold.

Tapping Sap

I take a lot of photographs, and it’s often hard to decide which ones to share. Choosing the shots I personally like is part of it, but avoiding too much repetition of the same species plays a role too. Still, it’s finch and hummingbird season, so I’ll be posting plenty of those.

For this photo, I inched closer and closer to the ruby‑throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) while snapping pictures until it finally flew off. After looking at the image, I found myself wondering what it was doing. Maybe it was tapping sap from the tree, or maybe it was hunting a tiny insect. They eat insects as well as nectar, you know.

Emerald Setting

This female ruby‑throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) was one of several using the dead branches of our crepe myrtles as morning perches on 4 May 2024. Two or three of them rotated through the same spots, settling briefly before darting off again. The distance from where I was sitting is perfect for photographing slightly larger small birds like finches, but hummingbirds — being truly tiny — make that same distance feel much farther.

Mythical Creature

Is it a flying narwhal, a unicorn with wings, or a garden fairy? Nope — it’s a ruby‑throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris). I happened to catch this tiny marvel zipping past while I was set up to photograph much larger (and much slower) birds. These hummingbirds flap their wings about 53 times per second, and even with my shutter speed at 1/1000, the wings still refused to freeze.

Despite that, I love the composition of this shot. On that day, it won out over several technically sharper images simply because the moment felt right.

Ruby in the Air
