  1. “Aeolian Bedforms” — Wind-caused ripples in desert sand dunes, Death Valley.

This is probably the classic notion of what a desert looks like — fields of wind-formed sand dunes stretching into the distance. In truth, such dunes typically cover only a very small fraction of the desert landscape. That’s certainly true in Death Valley National Park, where large, impressive dunes are only found in a handful of locations. We visited one of them on the final morning of our late February trip…more: gdanmitchell.com/2026/05/12/ae

  2. “Southern Death Valley” — Desert gold wildflowers, dark hills with ancient Lake Manly shoreline terraces.

There is something. a little unusual about this post. I didn’t pick this photograph so much for aesthetic reasons as for its inclusion of some fascinating features in this part of Death Valley. Let’s start with the obvious. There are desert gold wildflowers in the foreground, but if you look closely you can see many more of them across this broad Vally on the dark hillside. Keep reading to learn something about that hillside…more: gdanmitchell.com/2026/05/05/so

  16. A #botanist searches for the #seeds of the rare #DeathValleySage

    April 2, 2026

"For more than 15 years, botanist Naomi Fraga of the #CaliforniaBotanicGarden has been trying to collect seeds from the rare Death Valley sage, for safekeeping in a vault of native California seeds. Each time, she's come home empty handed. But this year, with the desert in the midst of a big bloom, she's trying again.

" 'It's a little bit of a gamble,' she says. 'But, you know, the plant's having a really good year. I feel hopeful.' "

  22. “Sand Patterns” — Patterns in sand dunes, Death Valley National Park.

Our main photographic targets during our late-February trip to Death Valley were Lake Manly and the impressive wildflower bloom, but we did schedule one morning visit to the sand dunes. We arrived well before sunrise when it was dark too see our way into the dunes. Unfortunately, this was not to be a morning for grand dune photographs, since morning overcast blocked the sunlight. So instead we focused on small subjects — plants and flowers, the morning traces of the passage of wildlife, and textures of windblown sand…more: gdanmitchell.com/2026/03/26/sa

  28. #DeathValley sees its most spectacular #superbloom in a decade

The #wildflowers have painted the usually barren landscape of #DeathValleyNationalPark — one of the hottest and driest places in the country — in pretty pink, purple and yellow.

    March 8, 2026, 6:00 AM EDT
    By Denise Chow

Excerpt: " 'You can think of it like drought evasion,' said Erik Rakestraw, a curator of botany at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson. 'In their seed form, it’s like they’re not even existing. They’re just laying in the soil.'

"In the proper conditions, the seeds will germinate. Then, after the flowers are pollinated, they’ll turn back to seeds and the cycle will begin again."

  29. If as reported in USA there is a going on
    bbc.com/news/videos/cly2eken4p
I was wondering if any biologists could explain how flowering plants benefit and can be pollinated if there are no insect numbers to match the supply of flowers because they only bloom once in a decade or so and insect populations I guess would not be synchronous in number e.g. bee population is out of synch and small and far away....

  31. This scarf is a gift for my uncle, inspired by quartz clusters we saw together backpacking in Cottonwood Canyon in Death Valley. From what I've been reading I think they were formed by intrusive igneous rock forming around xenoliths, and by cooling very slowly forming the incredible quartz crystals we saw, which looked like rings around the darker xenoliths in the weathered rock face we saw. I'm not trained as a geologist though and would love to find more information about the geology of Cottonwood Canyon from someone with some real expertise!

The wool is targhee roving I got at the nor cal ren faire. I spun it on my small cross arm spindle and wove it on a loom I've been borrowing from a friend. It's plain weave set at 8epi. It looked very open on the loom, but fulled into a wonderfully bouncy and dense fabric.

After fulling I scoured the fabric, then used rubber bands to do this shibori inspired dye process. After putting on the rubber bands I gave it a bath in tannins I extracted from an oak gall, then in a bath of cool water with just a tiny bit of dissolved ferrous sulfate. It was so exciting to see the fabric turn grey in a a matter of just a few minutes when I put it in the iron bath!

  37. #DeathValley #wildflower report: too early.

This is the biggest concentration of wildflowers I saw between Jubilee Pass and Furnace Creek. I stopped at Ashford Mills and have seen a lot more flowers there in the past. I'm thinking that people wanting to catch the beginning of the #SuperBloom should probably wait at least a week or two.

I definitely recommend coming in from Shoshone on Ryder 127 in the morning. Amazing views and no one on the road until Badwater.

  38. Taking the dogs for a quick walk and then we'll be on our way into the park with the final destination for this evening at Furnace Creek. From there, I'll decide whether I'll start the trip home or spend more time in the park. I've been here at least a dozen times, so I'm really sitting on the fence about staying. It all depends on the wildflowers. #RoadTrip #RVing #DeathValley

  39. I found a place to camp overnight just outside of #DeathValley National Park, not far from Jubilee Pass. I wanted to enter the park from the south along Badwater Road but I want to take my time getting up to Furnace Creek. It was too late in the day to make the whole drive without rushing, so I decided to camp here and continue on into the park tomorrow. This is BLM land, so I could fly my drone. #RVing #RoadTrip

Among American national parks, Death Valley is known for extensive and diverse evidence of human presence. There are traces of ancient people from the time of European immigrants and their descendants. More recently, members of the latter group came to this landscape as prospectors and miners. Today, even in the most remote parts of the park, you can find their decaying remnants, like this old cabin…continues: gdanmitchell.com/2026/01/16/mi

We were in Death Valley National Park just before Christmas, arriving the afternoon before the winter solstice and departing on Christmas Eve Day. There are lots of reasons to visit this landscape in the winter, including the reappearance of Lake Manly for the second time this year. In prehistoric times this Lake was much larger and deeper, but in wet years a remnant appears, and shallow water spreads across the lowest part of the valley...continues: gdanmitchell.com/2025/12/27/pa
