This scarf is a gift for my uncle, inspired by quartz clusters we saw together backpacking in Cottonwood Canyon in Death Valley. From what I've been reading I think they were formed by intrusive igneous rock forming around xenoliths, and by cooling very slowly forming the incredible quartz crystals we saw, which looked like rings around the darker xenoliths in the weathered rock face we saw. I'm not trained as a geologist though and would love to find more information about the geology of Cottonwood Canyon from someone with some real expertise!
The wool is targhee roving I got at the nor cal ren faire. I spun it on my small cross arm spindle and wove it on a loom I've been borrowing from a friend. It's plain weave set at 8epi. It looked very open on the loom, but fulled into a wonderfully bouncy and dense fabric.
After fulling I scoured the fabric, then used rubber bands to do this shibori inspired dye process. After putting on the rubber bands I gave it a bath in tannins I extracted from an oak gall, then in a bath of cool water with just a tiny bit of dissolved ferrous sulfate. It was so exciting to see the fabric turn grey in a a matter of just a few minutes when I put it in the iron bath!

A bag I made from scraps: jeans, an old pullover, old pillow lace, leftover cotton from another project, a sample of fabric my mom bought at a second hand store in the 90s, and some fabric my mother and I dyed together in a #shibori course. I did #sashiko on it.
The stone is from a necklace that belonged to my mother-in-law.
Inside, I have a pocket I bought in Kurashiki. I think it's woven from old kimono fabric...
The pattern was from "Sonderheft Patchwork Magazin Nr. 7".

AHHH!!! LOOK AT THEM!!!
tomorrow when it's light out I'll take some close up detail pictures to share, but I'm VERY pleased with how these came out
the pillowcases are very fun, bc I prepped them first, when I had energy and my fingers/back didn't hurt 🤣
the top sheet may be my least successful attempt ... I decided to fold it a bunch of times before tying bits of it (to save time and my fingers), and I must have tied it too tightly for any dye to penetrate, but I was so worried it was going to be solid purple 🤣
the fitted sheet might be my most successful attempt, despite not putting in nearly as much dye as the pillows. I decided to go super minimalist bc I prepped the fitted sheet last and I was running out of time, but what I love about it (which is kinda hard to tell in these photos) is the way the dye didn't distribute evenly in the majority of the fabric. it's not something I did on purpose, the pot just wasn't big enough to really stir the sheet
-
I'm doing kanoko shibori bc I have all the required tools, but sometime soon (for the second set of sheets) I want to acquire a long enough PVC pipe to play with arashi shibori, bc that shit looks AMAZING
I'm also interested in trying itajime shibori, which is where you fold the fabric a bunch of times and use pressure from two wood (or other sturdy material) blocks clamped onto the fabric to resist the dye, and you can get really cool patterns

taking advantage of waking up BEFORE EIGHT 🙃 by doing a ton of laundry while working on a #dye project I've been meaning to get to for a couple weeks now
I've been needing new sheets forever; Midna loves digging in the sheets with her little claws and now there's a BUNCH of tears and holes in the fabric. I've thought about mending them, but they're knit (T-shirt fabric) instead of woven, so I may just tear the sheets up for yarn or use them for another project, idk
BUT I bought two sets of pale purple (woven) sheets with the intention of dumping them into a #dyebath to make them dark purple. however, since they arrived, I've been reading a lot about #shibori, so I'm attempting some shibori-like dye resists
Midna is very interested in the damp bedding on the suddenly cleared off kitchen island, so bonus kitty photo!

En 2024 j'ai continué mes explorations avec le textile. Parmi les techniques visitées, il y a la broderie de Bayeux, enseignée au CTCM.

This work explores the encounter between the materiality of textiles and the craftsmanship of hand-dyeing, while exploiting the possibilities offered by digital manipulation in order to bring invented creatures to life.

A book cover in progress, in the form of #sashiko #embroidery on #shibori tie dyed cotton. I tried to let the dyed pattern of the fabric define which sashiko pattern to use.
I ironed on stabilizer and then used some kind of "milk glue" to attach the fabric to the book board for the first time. So far, the glue seems very promising.
I'm trying to decide what kind of bookbinding technique to use. I want the spine to partially expose the colorful papers I'm going to use within the book.

I wanted to try doing some sashiko on top of some #shibori attempts I made with my mother at a class a few years ago.
So here's my #wip
So far, I've only decided which patterns I want to embroider, and drawn them onto the fabric with a water erasable marker.
This time, I decided to try something new: I drew the grid lines with an air erasable pen so that it would fade and only leave me with what I actually want to sew. It seems to have worked.
This will become a book cover. -
My dyed bandana from the #BridgesMathArt workshop ‘Dyeing to Make an Orbifold’ by Bobby Stecher and Carolyn Yackel https://archive.bridgesmathart.org/2024/bridges2024-545.html Looks great but still running blue dye weeks later…

Making #shibori pattern is one of my ultimate highs in crafting garments. I do my best to document the process every time it happens because it’s so time-intensive and I don’t know when the next opportunity comes.
This latest pattern is called mokume (I.e. wood grain), and it’s my first time doing it!

Cyanotype in textile work: using it to create some custom-dyed thread.
A bit like shibori, a bit tie-dye, but more adaptable.
I used a heavy thread that was going to be used for sashiko.
It was soaked in the chemicals, dried, and randomly wrapped around a cardboard tube before exposing.
The result is a lovely mottled thread.
I also made a deep indigo by fully exposing the same thread.

I’m going post again regularly in my #tumblr blog. It’s been an outlet for my love of #shibori #textiles since 2012. It’s been on hold since 2020 but this #twittermigration is sending people like me back to #Tumblr http://Shiborilover.tumblr.com

And here's a shirt with my first attempt at the ne-maki #Shibori method. I secured marbles to the fabric using rubber bands. I only had time to attach a few marbles, but this turned out super cool and I'll be using it again with found objects.

Here's my first #TieDye attempt in 10+ years! I did these under heavy time constraints because I was helping a group of students with their own projects, so nothing turned out quite like I intended, but I learned a lot and I know what I'll do differently when I can try again with more time. This was for a global studies class, something fun to cap off our Asia unit; we had the kids research #Shibori, and then we had them try out furoshiki with their new cloths.
Details with what exactly I was going for will follow downthread.
