  1. These delightful and long-lasting Salvia flowers have brightened up my garden over the Summer months with hardly any watering :-)

    I like the fact that there are red ones, white ones and red and white ones: the combination seems greater than the sum of its parts!

    A little more red might improve the colour balance of my garden; I miss the small, intense red Potentilla that was eventually out-competed.

  3. Salvia columbariae (Chia Sage or Desert Chia), growing unusually isolated out of granitic gravel in a wash at Joshua Tree National Park, California in spring.

    This is not the plant from which the chia seeds that we consume nowadays are harvested (that's Chia hispanica), but the seeds were used in similar ways by Native Americans.

    This has become very popular around me here in Los Angeles. I now see it almost everywhere, but it was not that prevalent when we first planted ours. “Hot Lips” seems tolove our garden and climate, threatening to grow out of control without regular pruning.
