Salvia columbariae (Chia Sage or Desert Chia), growing unusually isolated out of granitic gravel in a wash at Joshua Tree National Park, California in spring.

This is not the plant from which the chia seeds that we consume nowadays are harvested (that's Chia hispanica), but the seeds were used in similar ways by Native Americans.

Cherry, lilac, fuchsia, salvia, and snapdragon—maybe

As I said a couple of weeks ago, we had an amazingly mild winter here in Seattle, a disturbingly mild winter. And spring. As predicted, the cherry tree exploded into puffs of pink. This was taken a few days ago:

Blossom is about to start falling. In a week, the lawn will be carpet of pink flowers.

Meanwhile, our two lilac trees (okay, one is ours, and one is the back neighbour’s, but it grows over our deck) are also getting in on the act. The one that grows over the kitchen deck is paler than the one that in the secret little north garden (not pictured) but it makes the deck smell heavenly.

Also on the kitchen deck, we have tiny yellow flowers that come every year but whose name I can never remember. The geranium—an annual, not the perennial kind; it was not supposed to survive the winter—has grown huge, massive leaves reaching everywhere, but no sign of flower buds.

However, we have our very first fuchsia buds swelling, which delights Kelley—she loves fuchsia (we have so much fuchsia, fuchsia of every kind, on the kitchen deck, the back deck, the front flower bed…)

And two tiny flowers growing among our Hot Lips salvia—little red pinpricks among the green:

And then there’s these, which I’m really, really hoping are snapdragons—I love snapdragons—but which I suppose could also be some kind of salvia:

Mis problemas con los guisantes (en la #huerta)

Antecedentes: Por dos años cultivé la variedad de guisante blanco de Villavieja de latroje.org y muy bien. Plantas muy productivas y muy ricas. Al tercer año apenas germinaron unas pocas, tras varios intentos. Y el siguiente, menos aún. Probé también una variedad de guisante negro de las que sí salieron unas matas, pero eran tan pocas que ni les hice caso.

Este año he vuelto a poner las dos variedades. La de blanco, con porcentaje de germinación bajo, pero se van desarrollando. Y la de negro se ha disparado. Pese a que dice el catálogo que es de porte medio y no necesita #entutorado, han resultado salir tan altas como las #habas y mucho más frondosas, por lo que ahora los problemas son otros y es lo que se ve en el vídeo.

El audio del vídeo describe la escena, pero básicamente se ven primero las matas de guisante blanco con sus flores blancas, como de medio metro de altura, detrás las de las habas, el doble. Y al girar la cámara se ven las matas de guisante negro, con flores fucsia (o así) que ocupan la otra mitad del bancal tanto a lo alto como todo lo ancho debido a la densidad. También se ven las flores moradas de la #salvia y una mata de #borraja de flor blanca con la que se han ido a unir los guisantes que se han salido del bancal.

Mis problemas con los guisantes (en la #huerta)

Antecedentes: Por dos años cultivé la variedad de guisante blanco de Villavieja de latroje.org y muy bien. Plantas muy productivas y muy ricas. Al tercer año apenas germinaron unas pocas, tras varios intentos. Y el siguiente, menos aún. Probé también una variedad de guisante negro de las que sí salieron unas matas, pero eran tan pocas que ni les hice caso.
