  1. Once the cotton plants began producing again, it reinspired my #spinning practice. They begin flowering in the spring and make a round of fruit and then stop flowering again in the depths of the summer when it’s too hot. However, during that time because of the rains, the plant becomes verdant and lush. Then in the fall, it’ll bloom and fruit again. That’s when you get the biggest harvest. #NativePlants #fiberarts #handspinning

  2. Evening sun spinning. Merino and silk. 🧶 #HandSpinning

  3. Shepherd's Harvest Sheep and Wool Festival is this weekend! I only just learned! It was my first ever fiber festival a year ago.

It's in Lake Elmo, MN. Any chance any of you are going to be there? I'll probably show up one of the days.

  4. A friend suggested I try a drop spindle instead of the wheel for silk. So here’s a silk and merino blend, with arm hair for scale. 🧶 #HandSpinning

  5. The errors versus what actually went onto the bobbin 😜 #HandSpinning #silk

  6. The finest silk? Not in this house. Silk is hard, you guys! 20p for scale #HandSpinning #silk

  7. I was spinning the light grey Faroe, and thought 'I'm sure I got a jumper's worth of this.' so I went rooting. I'ts even better than a whole jumper's worth of grey!

I must have had a stripey one planned but now I'm wondering if different colour marled three ply where the dominant colour changes would be nice.

Either way it's a big project. So at least I have a bit of colour to stop me getting too bored with it.

  9. #handspinning #spinning i have a plying question. I spun some bobbins (Z) and plied 2 threads together (S). Can I immediately ply those plied threads together (Z again)or do i need to let the plied (2 ply) thread settle for a while?

    How long/tall is it?

My first guess is a supported spindle (perhaps a goddess-style phang spindle?)-- you'd twirl it on the pointy tip (on a flat surface or a bowl) and draft with the other tip. The cop can be wound around the middle of the spindle, and you can create a temporary cop closer to where you're drafting.

I suspect the bit of string attached to it might've come from a leader that you can attach your fiber to to get started?

  11. I've been busy with some fiber arts while waiting for the weather to finish warming up for gardening season. I'm finally most of the way through this Gulf Coast Native fleece (a whole fleece - that's a lot of wool!) that I dyed with butternut hulls and coffee. It feels like it's taking forever, since I only have time to work on it every now and then. I'm looking forward to starting on the knitting-a-sweater phase of the project.

  12. Finished #plying the blue-green #yarn today. 144 yards! 🥳 Wet set it and it's drying overnight. 💙💚

  13. I Andean plied it! (This was made from the single I spun from my first batt off my new #DrumCarder.) My first #woolen #yarn! It looks like it's 4-ply, but it's only 2-ply! It's only 32 yards. 😆

Now to wet set it. #HandSpinning #FiberArts #plying

  14. This scarf is a gift for my uncle, inspired by quartz clusters we saw together backpacking in Cottonwood Canyon in Death Valley. From what I've been reading I think they were formed by intrusive igneous rock forming around xenoliths, and by cooling very slowly forming the incredible quartz crystals we saw, which looked like rings around the darker xenoliths in the weathered rock face we saw. I'm not trained as a geologist though and would love to find more information about the geology of Cottonwood Canyon from someone with some real expertise!

The wool is targhee roving I got at the nor cal ren faire. I spun it on my small cross arm spindle and wove it on a loom I've been borrowing from a friend. It's plain weave set at 8epi. It looked very open on the loom, but fulled into a wonderfully bouncy and dense fabric.

After fulling I scoured the fabric, then used rubber bands to do this shibori inspired dye process. After putting on the rubber bands I gave it a bath in tannins I extracted from an oak gall, then in a bath of cool water with just a tiny bit of dissolved ferrous sulfate. It was so exciting to see the fabric turn grey in a a matter of just a few minutes when I put it in the iron bath!

  19. I'm thinking of making a spiral sweater out of Orca's baby #fleece. 🤔 Not quite sure what pattern the different color yarns should go in. There would be a little white, lots of grays, and some black as I want to keep them separate and not blend them together.

  20. I'm back! Our Mastodon server was down for maintenance for the last couple of weeks, so I couldn't post over the holidays.

    Happy #NewYear! ✨🎇🎆

I finished the purple #handspun yarn. It's 196 yards! 🥳 I did manage DK weight.

I'm working on #HandSpinning its sister #yarn now.

Did you do any #FiberArts over the holidays?

  24. Swatch time! I finally got around to knitting a swatch of the Oni 3.0/merino 50:50 blend.

The word I keep using to describe this yarn is "sturdy". It is not fluffy or soft or very elastic, but it is dense (despite being woolen drafted) and makes a nice solid fabric. I'm thinking maybe fingerless gloves where you're more interested in blocking wind than insulation.

While not soft and squishy, it is also not scratchy, but has a nice smooth feel against the skin, with a bit of a tickle from the light furry halo.

As with the 100% Oni 2.x series, this is 30sts wide, with 4x sts/row seed stitch border & divider between stockinette on 3.0 and 2.5 mm needles.

However, while the 2.x series was 2-ply and ranged 20-25 wpi, this 3.0 yarn is 3-ply, and yet also in the 20-22 wpi range. So the singles were definitely finer overall this time around.

The 2.x swatches were getting really curly, so I re-blocked them along with the 3.0 swatch for better comparison. Of the two, the slightly lighter colored one with the extra-thin tails is woolen-drafted, while the other is worsted.
