Shepherd's Harvest Sheep and Wool Festival is this weekend! I only just learned! It was my first ever fiber festival a year ago.
It's in Lake Elmo, MN. Any chance any of you are going to be there? I'll probably show up one of the days.

A friend suggested I try a drop spindle instead of the wheel for silk. So here’s a silk and merino blend, with arm hair for scale. 🧶 #HandSpinning

The errors versus what actually went onto the bobbin 😜 #HandSpinning #silk

The finest silk? Not in this house. Silk is hard, you guys! 20p for scale #HandSpinning #silk

I was spinning the light grey Faroe, and thought 'I'm sure I got a jumper's worth of this.' so I went rooting. I'ts even better than a whole jumper's worth of grey!
I must have had a stripey one planned but now I'm wondering if different colour marled three ply where the dominant colour changes would be nice.
Either way it's a big project. So at least I have a bit of colour to stop me getting too bored with it.

#handspinning #spinning i have a plying question. I spun some bobbins (Z) and plied 2 threads together (S). Can I immediately ply those plied threads together (Z again)or do i need to let the plied (2 ply) thread settle for a while?

How I find peace in a wacky world. FYI: I'm a beginner so I know the yarn doesn't look perfect. #handspinning #spinningwheel #spinningwool #craft #spinning

How long/tall is it?
My first guess is a supported spindle (perhaps a goddess-style phang spindle?)-- you'd twirl it on the pointy tip (on a flat surface or a bowl) and draft with the other tip. The cop can be wound around the middle of the spindle, and you can create a temporary cop closer to where you're drafting.
I suspect the bit of string attached to it might've come from a leader that you can attach your fiber to to get started?

I've been busy with some fiber arts while waiting for the weather to finish warming up for gardening season. I'm finally most of the way through this Gulf Coast Native fleece (a whole fleece - that's a lot of wool!) that I dyed with butternut hulls and coffee. It feels like it's taking forever, since I only have time to work on it every now and then. I'm looking forward to starting on the knitting-a-sweater phase of the project.

Starting to spin the blue-green batt. My fav colors! 😏💙💚 #HandSpinning #Wool #Woolen #Yarn #DrumCarder
-
I Andean plied it! (This was made from the single I spun from my first batt off my new #DrumCarder.) My first #woolen #yarn! It looks like it's 4-ply, but it's only 2-ply! It's only 32 yards. 😆
Now to wet set it. #HandSpinning #FiberArts #plying

This scarf is a gift for my uncle, inspired by quartz clusters we saw together backpacking in Cottonwood Canyon in Death Valley. From what I've been reading I think they were formed by intrusive igneous rock forming around xenoliths, and by cooling very slowly forming the incredible quartz crystals we saw, which looked like rings around the darker xenoliths in the weathered rock face we saw. I'm not trained as a geologist though and would love to find more information about the geology of Cottonwood Canyon from someone with some real expertise!
The wool is targhee roving I got at the nor cal ren faire. I spun it on my small cross arm spindle and wove it on a loom I've been borrowing from a friend. It's plain weave set at 8epi. It looked very open on the loom, but fulled into a wonderfully bouncy and dense fabric.
After fulling I scoured the fabric, then used rubber bands to do this shibori inspired dye process. After putting on the rubber bands I gave it a bath in tannins I extracted from an oak gall, then in a bath of cool water with just a tiny bit of dissolved ferrous sulfate. It was so exciting to see the fabric turn grey in a a matter of just a few minutes when I put it in the iron bath!

Here is how I prepare my #roving or #combedtop for #HandSpinning worsted #yarn. #FiberArts

I don't think I've seen this in a long, long time, so maybe it should be brought out again.

I'm thinking of making a spiral sweater out of Orca's baby #fleece. 🤔 Not quite sure what pattern the different color yarns should go in. There would be a little white, lots of grays, and some black as I want to keep them separate and not blend them together.
-
I'm back! Our Mastodon server was down for maintenance for the last couple of weeks, so I couldn't post over the holidays.
Happy #NewYear! ✨🎇🎆
I finished the purple #handspun yarn. It's 196 yards! 🥳 I did manage DK weight.
I'm working on #HandSpinning its sister #yarn now.
Did you do any #FiberArts over the holidays?

this was a triumph
I'm making a note here: huge success 💕 -
I learned on my last skein not to snap wet silk, so these are having a very gentle drip dry before they get hung in the bathroom window
they came out so pretty 😍
-
these keep getting better! there was not quite enough twist in the first ply on this one, it's verrrry soft. I am going to send the last bobbin of singles through the wheel again just to tighten up the loose bits. just fine tuning now ✨
-
ohmigosh this is so fun. it's like an underwater candy store 🍭
-
bouclé is so charming. worth the effort, even if the first ply makes my ankles ache and my hands tired. the targhee in this should bounce up nicely.
this is the purple/pink end of the skein, less moody and tonal than the blue/purple end, more fun.
-
the bouclé keeps getting better. this is a mostly consistent thick single and three plies of binding thread - feels a lot sturdier and I think it balances better too. I don't know what I'm going to use this for but I can see it working out ok as an accent thread for weaving.
there is one trash batt left, I'm going to try to make a match for this skein. that'll be a good test for me.
-
fat bouclé, v2
these spirals are not squished together at all, which makes this a very unstable yarn, but it's not done yet so that's ok. this bobbin is a hero for putting up with my nonsense.

Here is my costume this year - I went as myself - a wench! 😆 Happy #Halloween!
This is the cowl/hood I #HandDyed and crocheted this year. The dusty rose accent is #handspun. It is entirely made of #GulfCoast #wool off the backs of my sheep and is heavy and super warm!

this is two ounces of fiber. usually I can fit four on one of these bobbins. I wasn't sure I would even make it - weird to be playing bobbin chicken with so little fiber. makes me think this is going to be delightfully lofty once it's finished.
I'm glad I have a jumbo bobbin for the next plying step. I don't think it'll fit on a normal one.
-
and that's my first bouclé skein finished! there are things I would do differently next time - less contrasty binder yarn, a little less twist in the original single for a bit more fluff - but it will weave up nicely. now I just have to clean off a loom and think of a suitable project.
-
Working on #HandSpinning my first black #yarn. The #wool is from Warbler's #fleece and the tips are bleached, so I'm removing the tips. It's not going to be the blackest black, but it'll be black enough. 100% #GulfCoast. #FiberArts
-
Progress - one bobbin mostly filled. The first batt was enough to fill one bobbin and the second one to about 2/3.
So this means I'm over the halfway point with the spinning on this yarn.
And there's now also a handspinning fedigroup

This is the beginning of the second of three batts from the same colorway. The turquoise is way greener than in this, but present light doesn't allow for better pictures.
Anyway. I'm spinning it with a lowish twist and aim for a bit to even single that will finally turn into a rustic 2ply. The plan is to weave with the finished yarn
