Made a new piece called “Whereto, Oh Waxwing?” featuring the Cedar Waxwing I did a while ago.

It’s a companion piece to the “Bye Bye Blackbird” piece I made the week prior. I’m submitting both to the Redwood Art Association Halloween Exhibition as limited edition, framed, signed and numbered 11x17” prints.

I’m really happy with how they turned out and how the visually compliment each other. While they’ll be available separately, I think they make a nice pair. So many of the artists I admire used to work this way—making pieces that could be shown together but stood apart as distinct works as well. My artistic “spirit guide”, Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh and her contemporaries worked like this quite often.

I’m happy with them both!

The movie One Battle After Another filmed in many out-of-the-way birding locales I’ve visited recently including Arcata, Eureka, Lompoc and Borrego Springs.

Weird to see a 30-second scene in a car chase and realize, I’ve stood right there with binoculars.

Movie is excellent. There are a few birds seen but they are incidental to the plot.

The waxwings almost never come alone. It's always a group of ten or so. This was during the golden hour. The waxwings are trying to catch the last rays of the day up in a tree. Until suddenly they decide the moment is gone and they all fly away together!

I always love seeing waxwings. They look too smooth, you can't really tell the feathers apart. I joke that it is just a bird made of liquid. Their group antics are fun to observe too!
