There are jackdaws aplenty in our backyard but very rarely do crows show up. Today I left out some cat food, dried worms and peanuts, which the jackdaws immediately descended upon. It seems the commotion caught the attention of a couple of doves and also this crow.

Opal, one of two white #ravens who are longtime residents at North Island Wildlife Recovery Center. She's not albino, please ignore my verbal error in vid.

Opal arrived at NIWRA centre in 2024 after being found with damaged feathers and reduced flight ability. In addition to her injuries, Opal has a condition called #leucism, which causes partial loss of pigmentation, making her more visible to predators, and results in weaker feather condition. She will remain at the centre.

Showing off its glossy black plumage, this Fish Crow landed next to my husband and I on a viewing deck rail as we were taking pictures of other birds in a beach marsh area. Apparently, it did not wish to be ignored.

Been leaving the food in a couple melamine plant trays set in an iron plant stand.
Blue Jays and the crow would take a peanut or two and fly off. When the dog food started, the crow would carry the tray to the ground. Pick the tray up, tilt it so the df slides off.

This morning I put a dish with dog food on a concrete bird bath. Maybe the crow would eat from there instead of the ground??
Nope. I watched the crow pick up the tray and fly off to who knows where?

Crow has a few feathers sticking out perpendicular from Its right wing. It's always the same crow.

Jay on the Move

The easiest way to catch a bird on the move is to already be snapping pictures when it leaves a known perch. Like this blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata) leaping from a swing‑shaped feeder with a whole peanut in its beak. Honestly, it might have two.

But here's the shocker... studies show that magpies are NOT actually attracted to shiny things! They’re cautious around unfamiliar things. Their curiosity and intelligence may have inspired the myth, which lives on in folklore - and in my painting.

#Crows Time to build nests. I saw the most interesting collection of twigs and branches as my friends dropped what they were carrying to get treats.

A Murder witnessing a Murder or a Murder Wake

Saw about 30 House Crows (maybe more) very noisy & swirling , & and sitting in a somewhat orderly fashion on roof tops. They were upset. Walked a bit & found a older pup / young dog possessively guarding a dead crow. Pictures attached
