I just spent three nights camping at #BirdLife Australia's #Gluepot Reserve in the #mallee of #SouthAustralia.
Tenperatures were reaching 37/38 C, and it's very dry there. The reserve has a small dam, but no other open water. The #MurrayRiver is about 40 km to the south.
But the #insects that appeared at night were primarily #freshwater species - lots of #CaddisFlies (#Trichoptera), #Chironomidae and #BackSwimmers (#Notonectidae).
This video shows the insects attracted to a #LepiLED UV light. If these mostly originated down at the river, the insect #biomass streaming up across this region (wind-blown?) is absolutely staggering.
There were also LOTS of #microbats everywhere, and the stars were incredible.

🚨 Urgent! Ask Australian Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek to reject the Whalers Way Orbital Launch Complex (EPBC 2021/9013) proposal.
Yes, the world relies on launch capacity and Australia could usefully have its own, but not at the cost of already endangered species. There must be a better site, rather than the first one chosen by a developer.

I've just contacted the CEO of #SouthernLaunch to encourage a rethink of their proposal for #WhalersWay on the #EyrePeninsula.
Three headline species are threatened by the proposal: the Southern Emu-wren, the Mallee Whipbird and in the nearby marine sanctuary, the Australian Sea Lion.
I said yes to rockets and launch capacity for #SouthAustralia but not at the cost of our remaining habitat for unique and endangered species.
I concluded by saying that "I appreciate that our fledgeling rocket and renewables industries are being held to higher account than mines have historically. But two wrongs don’t make a right."
That's the truth of it though. Mining has had pretty much a free 'slash, burn and dig' ride historically and new industries can't be offered the same free pass.

Secretary bird (Sagittarius serpentarius)
An interesting fact about its food behavior is its specialized technique for killing snakes, which are a significant part of its diet.
