  2. Birdwatching At Pacific Pines Central Park

Recently I visited the Gold Coast in Queensland to visit my mother and in between the hot and rainy weather, we managed to have a nice day and went for a walk at Central Park near her home. Here are photos of some of the birds we managed to spot walking around the small lake.

    Magpielark (also known as peewees)

    Black Swan

    Eurasian Coot

Australian Magpie (adult on left, juvenile on right)

    Pacific Black Ducks

Indian Myna (also known as Common Myna, an invasive species)

    Dusky Moorhen

    Sacred Ibis

    Wood Ducks

    Royal Spoonbill

    Little Black Cormorants

Variety of birds hanging out together

    Two young sulphur crested cockatoos

The lake at Central Park, nearly covered by water lillies

    Until next time,

  4. Finally installed 9 nesting boxes for the common swift! / Endlich haben wir 9 Mauersegler Nistkästen installiert.

If you look to the right, you will see a stove vent hole. For about six years, this hole has served as a nest for a pair of common swifts. The same pair has returned from Africa every year since then. Their nest was very small, so we bought them a couple of luxury apartments. The first swifts are expected to arrive from Africa on or after 15 April. I'm excited to see their reaction!

    ---

  7. A very smart male Little Bustard which did a nice flyby whilst I was watching a pair of Montagu's Harriers in a territorial dispute with a female Marsh Harrier.
I also saw Woodchat Shrike, Black-winged Kites and Stone Curlew.

  18. @mybirdpins but where’s Australia’s favourite, the Tawny Frogmouth, as voted in last year’s #Birdlife and Guardian #BirdOfTheYear poll? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I scored 6/6 (100%) on the Common Birds of Australia (6) quiz at Bird Brainer! birdbrainer.app/

  19. I just spent three nights camping at #BirdLife Australia's #Gluepot Reserve in the #mallee of #SouthAustralia.

Tenperatures were reaching 37/38 C, and it's very dry there. The reserve has a small dam, but no other open water. The #MurrayRiver is about 40 km to the south.

But the #insects that appeared at night were primarily #freshwater species - lots of #CaddisFlies (#Trichoptera), #Chironomidae and #BackSwimmers (#Notonectidae).

This video shows the insects attracted to a #LepiLED UV light. If these mostly originated down at the river, the insect #biomass streaming up across this region (wind-blown?) is absolutely staggering.

There were also LOTS of #microbats everywhere, and the stars were incredible.
