  6. 2026-05-04 Male northern cardinal with raised crest

This northern cardinal is aware of its surroundings as it spins around with a seed in its beak.

I am trying to get the hang of encoding with svtav1 library. Unfortunately I can’t use ffmpeg 4 on my desktop so I transfer the files to my laptop, with ffmpeg 6, and then can use a command like this:

    ffmpeg -i [input] -c:v libsvtav1 -c:a copy -preset 6 -svtav1-params "keyint=10s:tune=0:enable-overlays=1:scd=1:scm=0" [output]

  14. Northern Cardinal Pair

This captivating photo features a pair of northern cardinals perched on a bare tree branch. The male cardinal stands out with its vibrant red plumage, complete with a black mask around its eyes and beak. In contrast, the female cardinal exhibits a more subdued appearance, primarily in shades of brown with hints of reddish hues on her wings and tail. Both birds face the same direction against a backdrop of green foliage, illuminated by soft natural light.

  15. Northern Cardinal (Garden Birds by Mojö Fun)

The northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) is one of North America’s most popular, familiar, and beloved birds. Within its range, it is a common backyard feeder bird and every holiday season its visage is spread across a vast array of holiday décor. In fact, my Christmas tree topper is a northern cardinal! For some people, the bird has spiritual significance. It is said that visits from a […]

  17. Through the Branches

I really like this image of a northern cardinal and a chipping sparrow. It’s a shame the sparrow decided to look away—probably tracking the cardinal’s arrival. If its head had been turned toward the camera, I might have added it to my gallery. But it is what it is. C’est la vie.

I thought these were northern cardinal chirps when I watched and heard the video on my phone, but I think I am mistaken listening to it now.

  19. A couple of red birds at the feeder

I cleared out a path on the deck to refill the feeder last night. Of course the first visitor of the morning was a squirrel, but by mid-morning the birds had returned including this house finch before being displaced by a northern cardinal.

A lot of activity at the bird feeder this morning.

There is not much seed remaining and its toward the back of the feeder below the snow that we got.

  22. Grassland Encounter

Charlie and I spent a couple of hours outside yesterday, watching the birds and breathing in the cool air. I was hoping to spot something unusual—one of the odd species that sometimes pass through—but it was just the usual suspects for this time of year.

Still, there was a quiet moment worth noting: a sparrow and a cardinal sharing a patch of ground as they foraged. The cardinal found something—a grub or insect, maybe—and the sparrow turned to look, curious about the find. Not quite companions, but neighbors in the moment.

  23. Cardinal on a Railing — This vibrant Northern Cardinal adds a splash of color to a backyard scene. The male cardinal is known for its brilliant red plumage, while the female is a more subdued reddish-brown. This particular bird appears to be a female, perched comfortably on a metal railing.

  25. Good morning. 🐦🐦🐦

    20 November 2025

    We’ll be heading east
to Georgia soon for our annual Thanksgiving gathering. I think I mentioned that a couple of days ago. We host it at a humble little house we have there, which so far has been used almost exclusively for that purpose. Family comes from near and far to feast—though mostly near.

Last night we received an unexpected and unwelcome surprise. Through my sister, who lives in the area, we hired an HVAC company to check and service the AC and heating before our arrival. During their inspection, they discovered that squirrels had gotten into the attic and chewed through the water lines. So now we need to replace them before Thanksgiving. That’s right—WOW!

Yesterday, before we learned about the damage, I was just lounging around … la, de, da, de, da … without a care in the world, when the bliss suddenly dissipated. 😂

    C’est la vie.

Anyway, I think the repair work will get started on Monday.

It just occurred to me that we have insurance, and I should probably contact them. I don’t know why I never think of insurance right away when something damages the house.

  28. Good morning. 🐦🐦🐦

    29 September 2025

Charlie and I just returned from our Monday Walk. Before we left, I wrote a paragraph about feeling conflicted about going—something about how I don’t have the discipline I used to when it comes to that sort of thing. But I hit the wrong key and lost it. It is Monday, after all.

We passed the annual parish fair on our walk. It’s just down the street, humming with its usual mix of funnel cakes and brass band bravado. If you didn’t know, Louisiana has parishes instead of counties—a linguistic relic from our French and Spanish colonial past, both deeply Catholic. Back then, parishes marked church jurisdictions. These days, they function just like counties do elsewhere, but the name still carries a bit of ecclesiastical echo.

I have the nagging sense I’m forgetting something today, though I couldn’t tell you what. 🤔 Then again, if I knew what it was, I wouldn’t be forgetting it, would I? Oh well. It’ll come to me—or it won’t. And if it doesn’t, maybe it wasn’t all that important to begin with.

  29. Good morning. 🐦🐦🐦

    25 June 2025

For some reason, I woke up at five this morning. It’s quiet—so quiet that even my border collie, Charlie, went back to bed, I think. He’s not in here. Sunrise is still half an hour away. The days are growing shorter now; little by little, the sun lingers in sleep just a bit longer each morning. I usually wait for the ambient light to slip through the windows before I stir, but here I am, alone with my thoughts. Once again, I find myself wondering: Why am I up?

I think, my dog, Ben was in my dreams last night. You know he passed a few weeks ago. He used to wake me at these impossible hours, long before the birds thought to sing. I don’t believe in the supernatural, but if I did—maybe he came to say goodbye.

  30. Light as a Feather

For some reason, the song Tiptoe Through the Tulips, from the 1960s, popped into my head. I know—there are no tulips in the image. Maybe it’s because the cardinal appears to tiptoe up the slender branch. I couldn’t recall who sang the song, so I looked it up. Turns out, it was Herbert Khaury, better known as Tiny Tim. However, the song was actually written much earlier, in 1929, by Nick Lucas, with Tiny Tim later covering it. For those unfamiliar with Tiny Tim, he was known for his long, stringy hair and distinctive falsetto, often accompanying himself on the ukulele.

  31. Rub-a-dub-dub Three Birds in a Tub

When I first saw this image of birds at the bird feeder, an old nursery rhyme immediately came to mind.

"Rub-a-dub-dub, Three men in a tub, And who do you think they be? The butcher, the baker, The candlestick-maker, And all of them gone to sea." - James Hook,

"The nursery rhyme Rub-a-dub-dub was first published in 1798 in the second volume of Hook's Christmas Box, a collection by English composer James Hook. However, the rhyme's origins are believed to trace back to oral traditions, and its exact authorship remains unknown. Over time, the rhyme evolved into the version we know today." - Copilot

  33. Season's Greetings from the Cardinal

If there is a bird that represents the Christmas season, it is the Northern Cardinal, don't you think?

I've had several inquiries about how to get a print of some my photographs. This is a hobby for me, so I haven't been equipped to handle those requests. But I enjoy what I'm doing and want to share my photographs.

So, I set up an account and website with pixels. My website is:

    swede1952-photographs.pixels.c

If you want a print of one of my photographs, you can get it there, If I haven't loaded it, let me know which one it is, and I'll gladly load it there for you.

So far, I've identified #HouseWren, #AmericanRobins, #NorthernCardinal, #TuftedTitmouse, #PurpleFinch, #EasternTowhee and #RedEyedVireo -- just from my backyard! Some of them are migratory. Will post more about them soon. The #AmericanRobin is nesting next to the house, so that one comes up a lot.

  38. My wife bought a new ornament for our christmas tree. It’s a cardinal. She said that cardinals can represent people who have passed away trying to communicate with us. Having a cardinal on our christmas tree is a way to have my mother be with us this christmas. I nearly teared up when she gave it to me.

I love my wife so much. She is amazing. She is my rock. I wouldn’t have been able to make it through the past few years without her.
