Supernovae come in two main kinds: core collapse in stars above roughly 8 solar masses, and thermonuclear runaway in white dwarfs (Type Ia). They produce much of the universe's oxygen, silicon, calcium and iron. Heavy r-process elements such as gold come largely from neutron star mergers, as GW170817 showed.

Hubble image of Arp 70, also known as VV 341.

Like its more famous cousin M51 (Arp 85, the Whirlpool galaxy), Arp 70 consists of a larger galaxy with two well-defined spiral arms interacting with a small companion. Such interactions have been linked to the production of grand-design spiral arms.
