  6. The City of Minneapolis in its weekly newsletter is pleading with homeowners to quell creeping bellflower.

'If you see the “pretty” purple flowers, remove them from the plant before they go to seed. Please also tell your neighbors. If they have it and let it go to seed, it's likely you'll have it next year.

'If you have City garbage pickup, it is safe to put bellflower plants out with yard waste for pickup. The compost piles at the facility that composts the City's yard waste get hot enough for long enough to neutralize the plant parts and seeds.'

  15. Wonder-Weed

It’s been a cooler than normal summer thus far in the Last Frontier. Today we awoke to a fresh dusting of snowflakes on mountains peaks, and ‘seed-flakes’ on the ground. A single dandelion plant can bloom multiple times each season with multiple flower heads producing over 15,000 seeds. Every puffy whitedandelion blowball seed head contains 150-200 seeds, each equipped with its own parachute to disperse it on the wind. The leaves of Taraxacum officinale are rich in vitamins A, C and […]

  28. Ox-eye daisies are invasive here and I generally mow them- I let one patch reach full flower just for fun, and many pollinators do love them (I'll chop/pull before they seed). Here it is visited by a Leafcutter Bee- always fun to see these little folk.

  33. So, hubby wants to build a small outdoor patio for the grill/smoker. I managed to convince him NOT to use polymeric sand, but instead use good ol' paving sand with the pavers. And yeah, he did look into polymeric alternatives, but they weren't all they were cracked up to be. The alleged advantage of polymeric sand? Weed control (though as the plastic polymer breaks down, weeds will come through). Solution to that? Kill the weeds with boiling water and vinegar! Paving sand has been used successfully for thousands of years, without plastic!

  38. In the midst of a Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Mariesii Lilacina’ grows a self-sown Achillea, maybe Yarrow, hard to know and very difficult to spot. Their flowers are absolutely identical in colour. Even their flower heads are similar in shape. Is this a case of perfect colour harmony or plant intelligence using colour as camouflage?
