#Schlagzeug vs. #Cajon
Gestern Abend bin ich für einen erkrankten Drummer eingesprungen und habe ein zweistündiges Unterhaltungsprogramm mangels Schlagzeug mit einem Cajon bestritten. Das klang mit Mikrofon abgenommen eigentlich echt gut; besser als ich erwartet hatte.
Beim Soudcheck habe ich die Kante ungünstig getroffen und mir einen Bluterguss in Zeige- und Mittelfinger zugezogen. Die zwei Stunden Programm danach haben die Situation nicht gerade entschärft. 😖
Passiert sowas öfter? 😕

'Finished' mini-finger-cajon.
Quotes because I overdid it with the lettering, so turned it into a beta-test prototype unit. First enhancement was adding a slightly relaxed oiled leather strap to one each of the short & long sides, so now a player can choose a traditional wood tone or strike the leather for a nice clean snap. That’ll stay as I build a few more for pals.
Handy for small space practice—and more like fun than practice.

As with many absurdly-simple looking wooden instruments, different grips, strike points and modes of attack can be used to produce a wide variety of sounds, while modest pitch bends and muting can be had by fingering the sound hole.
This one's got a clean snap, no snare wire, but I'm likely to give that a go on my next try, along with moving to a hardwood/cedar soundboard construction approach.

A finger cajon nearing completion, my latest mini-project.
The standard cajon is a fairly large box-shaped instrument originated by African slaves in Peru who were denied traditional drums & resorted to shipping crates to get rhythmic. One sits on top and slaps, taps, etc. – most have snare drum wire mounted within for added sonic brightness & texture.
Handmade from 1/4" pine, bamboo mini-skewers & wood glue.

A finger cajon nearing completion, my latest mini-project.
The standard cajon is a fairly large box-shaped instrument originated by African slaves in Peru who were denied traditional drums & resorted to shipping crates to get rhythmic. One sits on top and slaps, taps, etc. – most have snare drum wire mounted within for added sonic brightness & texture.
Handmade from 1/4" pine, bamboo mini-skewers & wood glue.

Today's jam is dedicated to my high school music teacher John Fautley, who inspired my passion for jazz, drumming, electronic music (notator on an Atari ST, anyone?) and the recording arts.
This jam is a cajon solo over a riff that's from a song called Lawra that Tony Williams plays on. It's being played by the microfreak. I mic'ed the cajon with two mics, back and front.
