One of the biggest hurdles in researching #history is being objective when it comes to #indigenous practices.
How does one reconcile the #cruelty of collecting kambo (frog toxin used for as a ritual drug) with the #traditional aspect of the practice?
Do I say neutrally: "Indigenous people of X collect Y to help with luck in hunting." and thereby omit the fact that this is a potentially questionable practice?
Or do I write: "Y is collected through inducing a forced stress response in Z, which is, by indigenous standards, necessary for facilitating practice A"
(FYI, I purposely used a tame subject).
Perhaps proper #historians have an answer to this?

Three new #Indigenous Protected Areas declared in WA, paving the way for more cultural protection

- Yindjibarndi, Nyamal and Wudjari lands in Western Australia have been announced among 12 new Indigenous Protected Areas (IPA) today.
- IPAs trigger funding for traditional owners to manage land and sea country, including threatened species and feral animal management.
- What's next? The groups will now undertake consultation to determine where the funding should be directed.
"The federal government has announced a significant investment into protecting and managing cultural heritage in Western Australia's north, a first for the west Pilbara region.
"The government will invest $14.6 million to establish 12 new Indigenous Protected Areas (IPAs), with three of those in WA.
"The protected areas have been announced for #Yindjibarndi Country near Roebourne and Nyamal Country near Marble Bar in the #Pilbara, and #Wudjari Country near Esperance on WA's South Coast.
"CEO of Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation Michael Woodley said the move will help #revitalise the land and protect cultural heritage.
"'There's a real need and urgency to put [flora and fauna] back on the land,' he said.
"He said the newly proclaimed protected areas will allow rangers to reverse those impacts.
'"This gives us a really good opportunity to make sure we can revitalise those particular elements, and continue to sustain them as well,' he said.
"Indigenous Protected Areas are vast areas of land and sea country directly managed by #traditional owners such as Indigenous rangers, who work to protect #CulturalHeritage and #biodiversity.
"More than 90 million hectares of land across #Australia are currently covered by #IPAs, and the newly announced areas will add another eight million."

March 11, 2024"Federal governments in #Canada and the U.S. have agreed to ask the #InternationalJointCommission (#IJC) to study and take steps to mitigate the inflow of mining pollution to the #ElkRiver-#KootenaiRiver watershed through a joint reference, signaling a breakthrough in bilateral talks that have stalled for years, even as the company that owns the mines expands its footprint along the border with #Montana.
"The agreement was announced Monday by tribal and #FirstNation governments in Montana, #Idaho and #BritishColumbia (B.C.) who cheered the development after years of intensifying pressure on the #US and Canada. The reference means that an independent governance body representing both nations will convene to craft solutions to address the contaminants spilling into a watershed that crosses the international boundary at #LakeKoocanusa and spans #traditional #Aboriginal territory.
"The federal governments of both U.S. and Canada also confirmed the reference on Monday and issued a joint statement from the Ambassador of Canada to the United States, Kirsten Hillman, and the Ambassador of the United States to Canada, David L. Cohen. According to Pierre Cuguen, a spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada (#GAC), both countries 'have reached an Agreement-in-Principle (AIP) on next steps to further bilateral cooperation to reduce and mitigate the impacts of #WaterPollution” in the #transboundary #watershed.
"'The AIP provides a plan for Canada and the United States, with the assistance of the International Joint Commission, to take a holistic look at the watershed and build a shared understanding of the best available water quality data and science,' Cuguen said in an email, adding that both countries will work in concert 'with #IndigenousPeoples and #TribalNations and alongside provincial and state partners in the region.'
"'The Government of Canada is committed to safeguarding the transboundary #ElkKootenay watershed to protect the people and species that depend on this vital river system' according to Cuguen (the Canadian and First Nation spelling of Kootenai is “#Kootenay”).
"Meanwhile, tribal leaders on both sides of the border were triumphant after urging a reference for more than a decade, often with vague support from their federal counterparts.
"In Montana, Michael Dolson, chairman of the Confederated #Salish and #Kootenai Tribes (#CSKT), said the IJC reference is an essential first step in protecting fish and water quality in#LakeKoocanusa and the Kootenai River.

"Indigenous peoples around the globe agree that their health and the health of the planet are interdependent and in jeopardy. On day two of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, or UNPFII, this fact — that Indigenous people make up 5% of the world’s population but are responsible for 80% of its biodiversity — was repeated again and again by global Indigenous leaders.
"'As we are all aware, Indigenous peoples have least contributed to the problems of climate change nonetheless, due to their interdependence with their vital environment in their ecosystems, they suffer at its worst effects,' said Francisco Cali Tzay on Tuesday, a #Mayan #Cakchiquel from #Guatemala and the UN Special Rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous peoples. The Special Rapporteur keeps tabs on Indigenous peoples globally and reports back to The United Nations Commission on Human Rights on best practices.
"This year’s theme: human health, planetary and territorial health, and climate change gave attendees an opportunity to talk about the shortcomings of governments and non-Indigenous leaders. Others called upon the Permanent Forum to take action.

"In 2021, Norway’s Supreme Court stripped the operating license of the Fosen Vind project on Norway’s west coast after ruling it was built illegally and violated the Sámi’s human rights, and in January, a Swedish state-owned mining company found 'vast amounts of #RareEarthMinerals' it could mine to decrease dependency on #China. That mining, however, would 'devastate the local Sámi community,' the Sámi youth said.
"'We demand the Nordic states to immediately halt the ongoing human rights violations against the Sámi,' they said. 'We plead the global Indigenous community to notice this green colonialism.'
"The #GlobalIndigenousYouthCaucus — composed of Indigenous youth from all seven regions within the UN — also made waves on Tuesday, calling on the Permanent Forum and the General Assembly to assist in perpetuating ancestral knowledge by enforcing an intergenerational Indigenous advisory group for bodies of the United Nations. That advisory group could share and apply #TraditionaKnowledge and #IndigenousMethodologies within UN agencies, such as the World Health Organization.
"'Environmental destruction not only contributes to #ClimateChange , but also impedes on our ability to access to traditional knowledge, traditional medicines, sacred sites, and traditional practices,' The Global Indigenous Youth Caucus spokesperson said. 'As Indigenous youth, we are future bearers of knowledge, and we hold both the knowledge of our ancestors, and our descendants.'
"Indigenous Rights Governance partner at the New Zealand Human Rights Commission, Claire Charters, gave an intervention about the disproportionate risks #Māori people are facing in a changing landscape.

During #LunarNewYear they're #cooked by almost every Teochew household. Turnip cakes, fried with eggs, is one of our #cultural #specialty #snack #foods & we make them during every cultural event.
I like eating them w/soya sauce, red vinegar & hot chili sauce.
