  1. Ah, the riveting tale of how we've apparently been snoozing wrong for millennia! 🛌🤦‍♂️ Thank you, evolutionary anthropologist, for pointing out that our sleep issues are as old as the #Hadza #tribe itself—because who needs modern sleep studies when you can just ask the ancestors? 😴🔍

  2. Post: 150 People Max

The more I contemplate the fractures in modern society, the more I believe that the path forward requires turning away from massive, impersonal collectives and returning to smaller ones. I am drawn to a specific figure: 150. This is the estimated number of people who can live together under a social contract before it begins to bend and break. I first encountered this concept in Sebastian Junger’s Tribe, a book that remains a staple on my shelf today.

This threshold is known as Dunbar’s number, named after anthropologist Robin Dunbar. He theorized that humans can only comfortably maintain stable social relationships with approximately 150 people. This isn’t just a guess; it is backed by neurology and real-world evidence. Historical hunter-gatherer societies, modern military sub-units, and effective corporate departments frequently cluster around this size. Even in the age of social media, where we can follow thousands, our meaningful interactions still cap out at around the 150-person mark.

Consider the implications for a moment. Science suggests a person can only truly recognize about 500 people—the kind of recognition you have for someone you drive past every day but don’t know personally. If our brains are biologically limited to conceptualizing relationships 150 times over, how can we expect to make informed political decisions that affect millions? When the scale of government exceeds our cognitive capacity for community, the sense of mutual accountability vanishes.

This suggests a profound need for a societal shift toward “mini-collectivism.” By prioritizing local governance over centralized giants, we return to a scale where the social contract is enforceable through actual relationships rather than rigid, bureaucratic hierarchies. While it raises questions about how a globalized world would function without formalized large-scale governments, the current model’s failure to maintain social cohesion cannot be ignored.

There is something essential in this limitation. I’d love to hear your thoughts—please comment below if you think we can ever truly scale community beyond our biology.

  3. @elsua54 Agree on that.

We HAVE people "already there" who "made it" as far as #software dev but not dev #fans, #users, a #tribe, as a human #movement from #following.

Somehow people-loving communication is still Tetris piece missing from all the admin below that I semi-respect!

  5. Voting for the Cage: How Fundamentalism Married Politics, Made Dissent a Sin, and Persuaded Citizens to Surrender Their Own Freedom

Democracy does not always die with soldiers at the doors of parliament. Sometimes it reports for duty on election day. The polls open on schedule. Ballots are counted honestly. The winner raises a sacred book, invokes an ancestral civilization, promises to protect the family, and begins deciding which families count. No voter writes "oppress me" on a ballot. The authoritarian vote is written in the future tense and addressed to somebody else. Silence them. Remove her choice. Keep him out. Close their school. Ban their book. Cancel their citizenship. Let the police decide which protest is patriotic, let the government determine which religion is authentic, which body is legitimate, which marriage is real, which history may be taught, and which citizen must forever prove a loyalty the majority receives at birth. People vote for a locked door because they are told they will keep the key. 8.

  9. A quotation from Eric Hoffer

The less justified a man is in claiming excellence for his own self, the more ready he is to claim all excellence for his nation, his religion, his race or his holy cause.

  12. A quotation from George Orwell

All nationalists have the power of not seeing resemblances between similar sets of facts. A British Tory will defend self-determination in Europe and oppose it in India with no feeling of inconsistency. Actions are held to be good or bad, not on their own merits, but according to who does them, and there is almost no kind of outrage — torture, the use of hostages, forced labour, mass deportations, imprisonment without trial, forgery, assassination, the bombing of civilians — which does not change its moral colour when it is committed by ‘our’ side.

George Orwell (1903-1950) English journalist, essayist, writer [pseud. of Eric Arthur Blair]
Essay (1945-05), “Notes on Nationalism,” Polemic Magazine (1945-10)
