  1. 🗿 NEW: Comic artist @Ullilust spent years reading #iceage #archaeology before #drawing it.

Her "Early Man Was a Woman," the first comic to win #Germany’s top #nonfiction prize, argues the #StoneAge was more egalitarian than the familiar male-hunter image. #Paleolithic #art favors female figures, she notes, yet male researcher bias long dismissed them.

  6. Gene That Differs Between Humans and Neanderthals Could Shed Light On The Species Disappearance Mouse Study Suggests

Allan Henderson (CC BY 2.0) A gene called ASDL, which helps synthesize DNA, differs between modern humans and our extinct human relatives. The findings could shed light on why Neanderthals vanished. A protein that helps synthesize DNA is different in modern humans than it is in Neanderthals and Denisovans  our closest extinct relatives  and new experiments in mice genetically modified to express the modern human version hint that this may have made us behave differently…….Continue […]

  7. The #Pentland Firth is the stretch of water that separates the north of #Scotland from #Orkney.

It is a temperamental passage of water.

Proper archaeologists believe that #Neolithic people migrated to Orkney, across the Firth in boats, to live in #skarabrae and the #NessOfBrodgar.

    I'm not a proper archaeologist!

  8. Charred residues on 6,000-year-old pottery are revealing prehistoric European “recipes” — guelder rose berries with fish, greens with cyprinids, tubers alongside dairy. Forager cuisine was more intentional than we thought. #Archaeology #Prehistory #HunterGatherers anthropology.net/p/what-was-ac

  9. The claim is rather extraordinary:
existence of writing during the Late Paleolithic.

The claim is based on statistical analysis.
Now, "more than 3,000 characters on 260 objects" means an average of just 12 characters per object, but the article doesn't mention even the range of character counts per object, never mind the variance.

Patterns on mammoth tusks help to retell history of writing

  10. What if, when we stroll into California and feel at home, we're reminded not of any paradise of today, but rather Africa in the last ice age? The science, shockingly, checks out...

  11. Yesterday I took a long #gravelride through time. 140km (go and return) across the country side from home to the museum of prehistory in Le Grand Pressigny since I am a great lover of very old stuff 😀.

Many country lanes, very muddy trails, a blue sky with beautiful white clouds and the perfect temperature for such a ride.

Finaly it took me longer than I thought with an incredible average pace of 13,5kph!! I had to walk my bike across very wet pass several times and I stoped to take a lot of photos.

I was the entire day in the good company of singing birds and roe deer in the fields.
    So many good vibes!!!
