    This is a Hurricane Lowell Information Update for Monday September 7th at 5:30pm.

    As of 5:00 this afternoon, Hurricane Lowell is a category 2 hurricane with sustained winds of up to 110 mph. Lowell is expected to remain a hurricane as it continues to pass near the Hawaiian Islands.
    Lowell is currently located approximately 170 miles southwest of Lihue and 230 miles southwest of Honolulu and moving north northeast at 18 mph.
    Although Lowell remains far to the west of Hawaii Island, the forecast continues to call for high surf and possibly heavy rains and flooding conditions.
    A Flood Watch remains in effect for Hawaii Island through tomorrow afternoon. Parts of Hawaii Island may see rainfall amounts from 4 to 8 inches with locally higher amounts up to 12 inches. Residents in flood prone areas are advised to take precautions and in particular those areas of the Kau district that were severely impacted by Hurricane Lala.
    A high surf warning remains in effect for the south and west facing shores of Hawaii Island and a high surf advisory remains in effect for the east facing shores of Hawaii Island.

    At this time all state and county government operations on Hawaii Island and all schools on Hawaii Island will be open tomorrow.

    Conditions will be monitored closely and you will be kept informed of any developments.

    As of 5:00 am this morning, Hurricane Lowell remains a category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of up to 115 mph. Gradual weakening is expected through tomorrow.

    Lowell is currently located approximately 375 miles southwest of Lihue and 405 miles southwest of Honolulu and moving north northeast at 14mph.
    Although Lowell is passing far to the west of Hawaii Island, it is forecast to continue to present with high surf and possibly heavy rains and flooding conditions.

    A Flood Watch remains in effect for Hawaii Island through tomorrow afternoon. Parts of Hawaii Island may see rainfall amounts from 4 to 8 inches with locally higher amounts up to 12 inches. Residents in flood prone areas are advised to take precautions and in particular those areas of the Kau district that were severely impacted by Hurricane Lala.

    From NWS Honolulu on FB: A Tropical Storm Watch is now in effect for Kauai County and any preparations for damaging winds should be complete by midday Monday. Large swells from Lowell are expected to produce coastal flooding of low lying areas late Monday into Monday night across south and west facing shores. 1 to 3 feet of storm surge will be possible over Kauai. Heavy rain bands associated with Lowell will begin to impact the state late Sunday and a Flood Watch has been issued for the entire state. The heaviest rainfall is expected to be on Kauai and southeast slopes of the Big Island.
