Set in 2093, Memory of Princess Mumbi follows young filmmaker Kuve as he travels to the fictional African kingdom of Umata to make a documentary about the aftermath of a devastating war that led to the rejection of modern technology and a return to ancient kingdoms.
There he meets Mumbi, an aspiring actress who challenges him to make his film without artificial intelligence, relying instead on his own eyes, hands and imagination. As Kuve becomes increasingly fascinated by Mumbi and the world around her, his documentary gradually transforms into something more intimate.
Blending science fiction, romance and mockumentary, Damien Hauser’s inventive film explores memory, filmmaking and our relationship with technology, asking what remains distinctly human in a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence.
Shot in Kenya on a micro-budget, the film combines live action, green-screen techniques and AI-generated imagery. Hauser took on multiple roles, including writer, director, cinematographer, editor and composer, combining new digital tools with a handmade, independent approach to filmmaking.
Since premiering in the Giornate degli Autori section of the 2025 Venice Film Festival, Memory of Princess Mumbi has screened internationally at festivals including Toronto, BFI London, Zurich, Ghent and San Francisco. The film received the ZFF Critics Award at the Zurich Film Festival and the Golden Tulip for Best Film at the Istanbul Film Festival.

Saw a couple of mentions of the Unix `finger` protocol/command go by in my feed, and thought I'd relate a personal story about using it, because many people using Unix-derived OSes today never experienced it.
The command `finger <username>` would show you information about a user account. Depending on options you used, how other users configured their accounts, and how the system administrator configured things, it could show you the user's real name field, which terminal they were using, whether that terminal was open to writing from other terminals [1], when they logged in, how long their session had been idle, office location and phone number [2], whether they had unread email and when they last read email, and other things.
This was great for determining if someone was using the system at the same time as you, and e.g. what computer lab they were in.
You could even do this if they were on a different machine: `finger <username>@<hostname>`.
More interestingly, you could get a list of all users logged into a machine, with `finger @<hostname>`.
Yes, this was probably a bad idea from a security point of view. It was a different time.
This frequently led to another command: `talk`.

Heritage and Horizon brings the diversity of the Moroccan-Dutch identity and community to life in an exhibition featuring works by various artists. Step into the world of these artists and discover stories about identity, cultural heritage and belonging, situated in a broader historical context.Heritage and Horizon, curated by student-in-residence Mohamed El-Hirech, highlights the diversity of the Moroccan-Dutch identity and community through art and personal stories. The exhibition is structured as a journey through time: as a visitor, you begin at the historical starting point of the Moroccan presence in the Netherlands and move – through contemporary artistic perspectives – towards a general reflection on the future. Throughout the exhibition, you are invited to reflect on the following questions: what does cultural identity actually mean? When does one feel at home somewhere? Who decides what it means to be part of something?
Heritage and Horizon is a multimedia exhibition that brings together, amongst other things, photography, video and visual art by artists from various disciplines. The works demonstrate that identity is multi-layered, fluid and complex. In this way, Heritage and Horizon contributes to a more nuanced and multifaceted understanding on Moroccan-Dutch identities compared to the often stereotypical views that dominate public debate.
In parallel with the exhibition, weekly public programming takes place. These cultural programmes include a film screening, an interactive panel discussion and a henna workshop. The project invites visitors to not only look through the art works, but also engage in conversation, discover new perspectives and actively take part.

Lawil Karama (she/her) is a Ugandan-Dutch conceptual artist born in former West Berlin and based in Amsterdam. Her work is deeply rooted in the diasporic experience, often drawing from her family history as a starting point for challenging conventional narratives and amplifying unheard voices. Karama’s creative path began in the world of special make-up effects, which continues to influence her approach, bringing a visceral understanding of form, surface, and psychological tension into her current work.
Edward Akintola Hubbard (he/him) is a Rotterdam-based artist and educator whose practice is experimental ethnography. Combining research methods from across anthropology, art theory, cinema, media studies, gender studies, urban studies, gothic studies and African diaspora studies, his work takes form through photography, video, installation, and curation. As artistic director of the DARKMATTER Collective, Hubbard is invested in creating spaces where the invisible can be made visible.
