To which Free/Open Source Software you are contributing?

We have many Linux Users Groups, Python/React/Java/Wikipedia/etc communities in India. Most of them are doing evangelism very well for long time. They are like fan clubs. Sharing the good thing they enjoy to others. That’s really good to have fans around FOSS technologies sharing the things we love.

Long time back, in Chennai Linux Users Group meetings, we had regular trainings on how to contribute to the linux distributions by packaging. Ubuntu conducted many IRC based dev-days for new developers. I am not seeing such efforts for long time. For some reason, we are not encouraging/training the developers to contribute to the software we use daily. I will be happy to be proved wrong.

With the number of IT people in India, with the number of users of free software, we should be the leading contributors for any big software. Yes, there are many individual contributors. There are thousands of free software developers who contribute to may open source projects and share their works as open source in GitHub and gitlab. Thank you all. You are making our world a better one.

I know the people who contribute to PyPi, Python, LibreOffice Testing, Emacs, Linux kernel development, BSD development etc. Many are contributing to the FOSS communities by organizing meetings, giving space for meetups, free training, translating docs, writing books, art works, giving talks in meetups/conferences, writing tons of Wikipedia articles, contributing to Wikimedia commons and openstreetmaps etc. Many people start to donate for FOSS organizations.

I am thinking, why Don’t we have huge developers communities, who contribute to mainstream free software. We should have continuous training on how to contribute to any distro by development, packaging etc. how to contribute to the mainstream applications like LibreOffice, ffmpeg, gnome, KDE etc.

For long time, Kerala FOSS friends are contributing to Debian by packaging and producing many official Debian developers every year. They conduct Debian conferences and teach/mentor on contributing to Debian. We have indic Wikipedia developers conducting training/hackathons often, to bring more new developers for Wikipedia.

As huge users of Free Software, We should start contributing to Free Software.

If you are running any FOSS community or part of any such community, ask yourself and the team, on how are we going to start contributing to the free software that we use/evangelize. Like we tell to our friends “I use this free software. it is really good. give a try”, we should say as “I contribute to this free software. it is easy to contribute. you should also join and give your contributions”. For that we should be contributing to any software, regularly, for long time, as much as possible.

Each Free software have its own website, a forum, mailing list, a chat room, a git repo, an issue tracker, some documentation. Pick any free software you use regularly, goto its community page, join its developer community and ask how can you help. You will be wondered to see how happily they are welcoming you.
