  1. #WashingtonState - Largest #restoration project on #StillaguamishRiver completed to help endangered #salmon

    Fri, September 25, 2026

"The #StillaguamishTribe completed its largest restoration project on the Stillaguamish River on Friday, when water from the North Fork rushed into a side channel for the first time in more than 150 years.

"The project is the latest installment in a large-scale effort by the Tribe to restore the river to how it flowed before the area was colonized in the 1800s.

"The two-mile stretch of river, 230 acres of surrounding land, and the projects to come will be vital to restoring #salmon #habitat, reducing #wildfire risk, and protecting homes from flood damage, according to Jason Griffith and Kadi Bizyayeva with the tribe.

" 'You can see this project is that large, and that's the scale of habitat that's been lost.' Griffith said, 'We've lost thousands of acres of fish and wildlife habitat, and we're working piece by piece to put thousands of acres of fish and wildlife habitat back on the landscape.'

"Griffith, the environmental program manager, has helped the Tribe buy the land that was a former #GolfCourse, #CattleRanch, and tree farm.

"Construction and acquisition combined cost close to $15 million.

"The #EndangeredSpecies List has #CohoSalmon as endangered of extinction and #ChumSalmon as threatened with extinction. This project primarily intends to help protect these types of fish."

  5. #LandBack: #Mikmaq Nation Acquires More Than 80 Acres

    Native News Online Staff
    Tue, September 8, 2026

"The Mi'kmaq Nation has added 83 acres to its land base on its northernmost reservation in Maine. The land is adjacent to a community center and tribal housing where 48 residents live.

"According to a press release, the parcel's former owner offered to sell the land to the Nation before listing it for sale. The Tribe partnered with land conservation nonprofit #TrustForPublicLand. #TPL raised the required funds to meet the landowner's acquisition timeline so the land could be transferred to Mi'kmaq Nation as soon as possible.

"The acquisition — called #Pugweliget , or 'living together in a group' — is the Nation's second this year. In June, it obtained the title to 3,400 acres in Aroostook County, Maine, doubling its land holdings.

"While the latest acquisition immediately benefits the residents of the housing center, Shannon Hill, Environmental Health Director for the Mi'kmaq Nation, said all tribal members will have access to land for foraging, hunting, fishing, and cultural practices.

"The Mi'kmaq Nation is honored to have been entrusted with another land return this year. Although this property has much fewer acres than the 3,400-acre land return earlier this summer, each land return is unique and meaningful in its own way," Hill said in a press release. "The ability to take a walk and connect with the land as we did thousands of years ago without fear of trespassing is of far greater importance here than the number of acres."

Pugweliget is the latest milestone in an effort dubbed the Tributary Land Returns, a collaboration between the five federally recognized Wabanaki Tribes and seven non-native organizations, to return over 50,000 acres to Wabanaki communities across 11 different projects. Once completed, the TLR will be the largest return of private lands in U.S. history. Seven of the projects have been completed since 2019."

  13. #TwoSpiritPowwows : Shared Resources To Help Celebrate #Indigiqueer Joy

#TwoSpirit powwows are forming out of community needs and more continue to pop up each year.

by Nika Bartoo-Smith, Underscore Native News + ICT June 5, 2026

"Two-Spirit powwows have been a growing space in nearly the last 15 years all across Turtle Island for Two-Spirit and Indigiqueer community members and allies.

"From one of the longest-running dedicated Two-Spirit powwows in San Francisco to the second annual in Montana, Two-Spirit powwows have two common goals: to share resources and celebrate Indigiqueer joy.

" 'We want to honor and celebrate the fact that even through genocide, even through assimilation, Two-Spirit and Indigiqueer folks are alive and thriving, and are contributing in endless ways to their own families, to their own communities, and to the world,' said Angel Fabian, executive director of the Bay Area American Indian Two-Spirits. Fabian is Ben’Zaa ( #Zapotecx ) and #Xicanx.

"As the #Trump administration has brought with it a wave of attacks on the rights of #2SLGBTQ+ people, especially #TransRights, the importance of Two-Spirit powwows, societies and spaces are essential and continue to grow. "

  21. Three #Navajo Family Members Die in #FlashFlood as Nation Remains Under State of Emergency

by Native News Online Staff, September 17, 2026

"The Navajo Nation remains under a nationwide state of emergency as severe monsoon storms, flash flooding and storm-related damage to roads and infrastructure continue to impact communities across the reservation.

"The 25th Navajo Nation Council and Commission on Emergency Management (CEM) convened an emergency special meeting Tuesday and reaffirmed Resolution No. CEM 26-004, which declared a Navajo Nation-wide state of emergency because of the #SevereWeather and #flooding.

" 'The safety of our Navajo people remains our highest priority as severe storms and flash flooding continue across our communities,' CEM Chairman Marcarlo Roanhorse said. 33. #Wisconsin Groups Call on #Evers to Halt #Enbridge #Line5 Following #MajorSpill

by Native News Online Staff, September 11, 2026

"Tribal leaders and organizations from across the #GreatLakes Region called on Wisconsin Gov. #TonyEvers (D) Thursday to halt Enbridge’s Line 5 reroute project and take action against the company following a major #NaturalGas liquids spill in northern Wisconsin.

"The press conference came two weeks after an Enbridge #pipeline rupture released approximately 31,000 barrels, or 1.3 million gallons, of natural gas liquids. Advocates described the incident as the largest pipeline spill of its kind in Wisconsin’s recent history.

" #BadRiver Tribal Elder #JoeBates, who obtained some of the first footage of the recent spill, described what he witnessed after receiving a call about the rupture.

" 'I got the call, and I went down to the site. I had no idea what I was about to see. The plumes of gas were like nothing I’ve ever seen before,' Bates said.

"The call for action also followed #Michigan Gov. #GretchenWhitmer ’s announcement Wednesday that she will reconsider state permits for Enbridge’s proposed Line 5 tunnel project beneath the #StraitsOfMackinac. #Whitmer also reiterated her opposition to continued Line 5 oil transport through the Straits.

" 'Yesterday, Governor Whitmer announced that she plans to spend her last three months as Governor cementing her legacy. She will prioritize protecting the Great Lakes from the catastrophic oil spill that Enbridge’s track record is moving towards. Today, we’re calling on Governor Evers to do the same and leave a legacy of putting people and our water above corporate interests,' said Elizabeth Ward, director of the #SierraClub Wisconsin Chapter.

"Dozens of organizations sent a letter Thursday to Evers and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Secretary #KarenHyun, calling on state officials to hold Enbridge accountable and shut down Line 5.

"The signatories include local organizations such as the #Chequamegon #Audubon Society; statewide groups including the Wisconsin #Wildlife Federation and Wisconsin #Ecolatinos ; and regional and national organizations such as the Great Lakes Business Network and Indigenous Environmental Network [ #IEN ].

"The organizations represent sportsmen, businesses, #environmentalists, #IndigenousPeoples, religious leaders, #CleanWater advocates and others who oppose continued operation of Line 5.

"Pipeline Safety Trust Director Bill Caram said the scale of the incident places it among the most serious pipeline spills in the country in recent decades."

"Officials in #PageAZ, a small city near the Glen Canyon Dam, passed a land sale agreement last fall that establishes a framework for future construction of a data center.

"The sale of the 500-acre parcel about a mile away from the Colorado River’s #HorseshoeBend — one of the most visited natural landmarks in the #GlenCanyon National Recreation Area — to #HuntleyLLC for $7 million specifies that the company intends to build a 1 gigawatt data center.

"Residents have been pushing back and launched a petition earlier this year to stop the planned data center from being built.

"About 5 miles south of the city, a group of tribal leaders began to take notice. The proposed data center borders the #LeChee Chapter of the #NavajoNation, located in the northwest corner of the Navajo Reservation. "

  45. #DeweyBurdock, A Renewed #Uranium Project, Threatens #SacredWaters in the #HeSapa

    By NDN Collective • August 17, 2026

"As #Indigenous peoples, we are accustomed to generational battles. The fight to both return and protect the #ȞeSápa ( #BlackHills ) in #SouthDakota is one of those fights. Our #SacredSites and waters are constantly facing threats from new mining efforts.

"The Dewey-Burdock Uranium Project is a proposed mine covering approximately 10,580 acres across private and federal lands within the Ȟe Sápa. Individuals, organizations, and communities have been fighting against this uranium project for 20 years due to the radioactive waste it would generate, posing major threats to the health of people, animals, land, and water in the area.

History of Uranium Mining and Native Communities

"Native communities in South Dakota are no strangers to the risks posed by uranium mines. In 1962, about 200 tons of radioactive material from old #UraniumMines seeped through a broken dam at the #AngosturaReservoir and made its way into the #CheyenneRiver, upstream from #PineRidge. This meant that many living on the #PineRidgeReservation were exposed to #RadioactiveWater. Exposure to #radioactive materials is linked to #cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders, #AutoimmuneDisorders, #thyroid disease, and more. We know that even 50 years later, high uranium levels are still present in #AngosturaReservoir in the southern Ȟe Sápa.

"The Angostura Reservoir is not far from where the proposed Dewey-Burdock Uranium project is located. So it makes sense that the surrounding community opposes a project that risks leaking even more radioactive material into the local ecosystem and waters. It is important to note that the threat from radioactive waste does not lessen over human time scales. Waste from uranium mining remains radioactive at harmful levels for hundreds of thousands of years.

"We have seen the impact on Native communities when radioactive waste from uranium mining and processing is left behind. Today, over 500 abandoned #UraniumMines are scattered across the #NavajoNation, causing numerous health disparities. We also see how what was once a historical gathering place for #Yakama peoples on the shore of the #ColumbiaRiver is now a #Superfund site so contaminated that spending a few minutes in the soil underneath some of the buildings would expose someone to enough radiation to kill an adult."

  57. #Akwesasne #Mohawks oppose #US Senate Bill 3475 to ratify #NewYorkState Land Claims Settlement

    by Shé:kon, #MohawkNationNews, September 7, 2026

Excerpt: "S.3475 is about whether the United States Congress will help repair a historic injustice or whether it will make that injustice permanent. It is about whether Congress will respect the Mohawk people – the Kanien’kehá:ka as we say in our own language — as a living people with our own governance, laws,
responsibilities, language, culture, and relationship to the land — or whether Congress will again treat us as a problem to be settled, divided, and erased. We are here to say clearly: #S3475 must be opposed. At minimum, it must be paused, and if it is ever to move forward, it must be substantially amended. No federal settlement should be passed that finalizes land status, governance issues, easements, rights-of-way, claims, or future rights without the full, free, prior, informed, and culturally legitimate consent of all affected Kanien’kehá:ka-Mohawk people and all affected Kanien’kehá:ka- Mohawk governance systems."
