Excerpt: "Finnish authorities have ordered a halt to building work at two planned Google data centres amid concerns over the clearance of more than 300 hectares of #forest.
"The sites form part of Google's record €13bn (£11bn; $15bn) investment in Finland, announced less than a month ago and described by the company as its largest single investment in Europe.
The Finnish Supervisory Agency ( #LVV ) said work at one site was carried out without a mandatory #EnvironmentalImpactAssessment and ordered measures that would 'significantly alter the environment' to be suspended by 23 October."Google said it had 'fallen short of our own high standards in this instance' and would follow the agency's guidance.
The orders relate to preparatory work carried out at the planned data centre sites in #Muhos and #Kajaani."According to LVV's head of environment Tommi Muilu, work at the sites included the removal of trees and topsoil, the construction of site roads and storage areas, and changes to ditches.
#TuikeFinland, the company behind Google's data centre projects, has been asked to provide an explanation and set out how it intends to proceed by 14 October. The agency said it could begin 'enforcement proceedings' if the company failed to comply with its demand."Hanna Halmeenpaa, chair of the Finnish Association for #NatureConservation, had previously told the AFP news agency that ' #NatureSites which should be preserved' had been felled. The conservation group had previously called for work to be halted while the environmental requirements were examined."

EASTPORT, Maine — "The Center for Biological Diversity filed a motion today to intervene in the federal permitting process for an underwater data center proposed off the coast of Maine. The proposed project could harm endangered North Atlantic right whales and fin whales, along with other marine wildlife.
" 'Experimenting with an underwater data center in the habitat of one of the world’s most endangered whale populations is a truly terrible idea,' said Kristen Monsell, oceans legal director at the Center for Biological Diversity. 'Whales already face too many human-caused threats. Noise from the surveys and vessels could stress and disturb wildlife. If it’s built, this underwater data center could make the bay even more dangerous. The project needs to be stopped in its tracks.'
"The data center would be on about 27 acres near Eastport, Maine, in the #BayOfFundy, where #EndangeredWhales, #sturgeon and other #CoastalWildlife live and feed.
"On Aug. 25 the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission accepted an application from #DeepGreenWesternPassageSPV LLC to study feasibility for the project. The preliminary surveys and monitoring the company is proposing may increase vessel traffic and #NoisePollution , which could disrupt the behavior of #RightWhales, #FinWhales and other wildlife and interfere with their communication and foraging. These activities could also affect prey, increase pollution, impair #habitat and create collision or displacement risks.
"If the data center is eventually built, it would amplify those risks and raise additional concerns for #MarineLife, including entrapment, #thermal discharges, #contaminants, noise and construction impacts. #DeepGreen has also identified a potential second phase that would expand the project to as much as 400 acres.
"Fewer than 400 North Atlantic right whales remain, including only about 70 breeding females. The primary threats to right whales are fishing gear entanglements and vessel strikes. Fin whales, which are the second largest whale species on Earth, are also endangered throughout their range."

Southern California Edison and other power providers urged customers to conserve electricity as triple-digit temperatures increase demand for air conditioning. Edison warned that extreme heat could increase the likelihood of temporary outages.
About 23,000 customers were without power in Los Angeles County at the peak of outages from Sunday into Monday morning. That number fell below 11,000 by midmorning Monday. Outages were also reported in Orange and San Bernardino counties.
Edison’s outage map listed fire, weather and other causes for service disruptions."

#PortWashington, #Wisconsin — Neighbors of Port Washington’s $15 billion #AIDatacenter and advocacy groups are voicing public health and #environmental concerns about plans for backup #DieselGenerators at the site under review by Wisconsin regulators.
"They’re also asking Wisconsin’s Department of Natural Resources for a more robust analysis of the entire project, but especially of the diesel generators, after the agency signaled it’s likely to approve air quality permits for them.
"The data center’s developer and operator, Vantage, submitted permitting requests to the DNR for 45 diesel-fired backup generators that would provide a combined 87 megawatts during grid failures, according to applications submitted in August and September of 2025, shortly after officials in the City of #PortWashingtonWI signed a development agreement.
"Construction on the #datacenter is well underway, and it will soon house #OpenAI and #Oracle, which will leverage the site to advance #Artificialntelligence.
"Diesel generators are pickup-truck-sized power sources, often used as emergency energy backstops for when the grid fails, especially at large commercial and industrial facilities that run around the clock. More frequently, that includes #HyperscaleDatacenters . Wisconsin is a hub for diesel generator manufacturing and distribution; it’s the home of several industry players, such as #Generac Power Systems.
"But diesel generators also produce #pollutant byproducts known to affect the environment and cause or exacerbate health problems, especially when several of them are used in full force, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
"Those concerns were at the center of an April 14 virtual public hearing held by the DNR as part of its review of Vantage’s request.

"National air quality standards set two upper limits for nitrogen oxide concentration: one established in 1971 that averages the pollutant over a year, and another established in 2010 that examines the pollutant over a one-hour period.

"One of three massive data centers is already complete, a second appears nearly finished and heavy machinery is now prepping a footprint for the third. On a recent afternoon, the low rumble of construction nearly drowned out chirps from #PrairieDogs burrowed into the surrounding #grasslands.
"Once completed, the campus will require at least #160MW, about four times the peak capacity of the international airport nearby. QTS also promises around-the-clock service for future customers. To keep the facility humming through blackouts, it plans to add 98 diesel backup generators to its fleet of 40 hulking engines already installed at the Aurora campus, according to a permit application submitted to state regulators in July 2025.
"It’s a backup system fit for Colorado’s largest data center, the state’s only #hyperscale facility larger than #100MW. Each engine is a small power plant the size of a semitruck, but roughly seven times more powerful. Once installed, the generators will release sporadic bursts of intense #sound and #DieselExhaust, containing #pollutants like #ParticulateMatter and #NitrogenOxides, a key ingredient behind Colorado’s #SummertimeOzone struggles.
"Data center critics worry that similar projects could be close behind. Alana Miller, the Colorado policy director for the Natural Resources Defense Council [ #NRDC ], said the prospect is why her organization helped lead a failed push to regulate data centers in the last legislative session. If passed, the bill would have required data centers to supply their own #RenewableEnergy, tightened pollution standards for backup systems and required additional input for projects in historically polluted neighborhoods.
" 'The QTS Aurora expansion is a perfect example of why Colorado needs strong statewide data center guardrails,' Miller said. 'Aurora is already in severe ozone nonattainment, and left unchecked, new diesel generators could make the problem worse.'

"A recent analysis by the Washington Post examined air permits for more than 132 data centers packed into the region. It found generators at the facilities represent a significant health risk — even if they’re rarely used. With more than 10,000 generators attached to Virginia data centers, even operating them less than an average of an hour per week would carry roughly the same public health impact as five large gas-fired power plants, according to the report.

Now it has come to my attention that data centers require a huge amount of #diesel to be stored on site for their backup diesel generators. There are over 1400 data center sites being built or planned.
"The backup generators are needed in case of an electric interruption from the grid. Just one facility #QTS in #Utah is going to store 2.6 million gallons of diesel in onsite tanks. Another site in #Delaware is going to take 2.5 million gallons. This is a larger site and smaller sites will take less diesel. However with over 1400 sites the storage of diesel could very well reach over 1 billion gallons of diesel. That is a lot of diesel that is taken from the supply chain.
"So what are the implications for the diesel supply. As supply shrinks will the price go up? Will there be shortages? And what happens in #hurricane areas where the grid goes down for quite some time. Some of these facilities will consume over 800,000 gallons of diesel a day. At that rate does that area even have that much extra diesel on hand to resupply. Who gets priority? #Citizens and trucking companies? Or data centers?
"This just adds another element to the data center discussion. Politicians who dont want the data centers favor a more balanced supply of diesel. Politicians who want #datacenters want diesel fuel removed from the market supply. If campaigns in areas where diesel is a concern highlite this point it could alter the campaign narrative around data centers and diesel."

"The Old Town City Council approved the first step toward a temporary ban on data centers in the city.
"Councilors discussed the draft of the short-term ban, or moratorium, on data centers in Old Town’s industrial zones during their meeting Tuesday, and voted unanimously to continue the process at a special council meeting on Sept. 21.
"Maine communities have brought forward bans on data centers throughout the year to slow down possible projects and allow time to learn about the economic and environmental effects they can have on a community before enacting policies or long-term bans. Old Town’s ban was brought forward as a 'proactive opportunity' to learn and create policy before a center is proposed to be built in the city, Councilor Zachary Wyles said.
"The proposed ban would last 180 days and be retroactive to Tuesday’s meeting.
Old Town could be a desirable city for a data center because of its industrial zones and history of having businesses like Nine Dragons Paper and Old Town Canoe, Council President Christian Pushor said. With centers being proposed in other areas of the state, it makes sense for the council to temporarily ban the developments while studying the economic and #environmental effects they could have, Pushor said."Read more:

"Carrie Schmidt and Kimberly Twente were named as defendants in a civil lawsuit filed by the City of Edgerton on Aug. 4. The suit aims to block a possible municipal vote on a data center ban in the Johnson County town, through a temporary restraining order and injunction.
"Schmidt and Twente were involved in the citizen-led petition to allow Edgerton residents to vote on a ballot initiative classifying data centers as industrial nuisances. With 208 signatures, the petition received enough support to appear on the ballot in the town of 1,924 people, the Johnson County Election Office confirmed."

SALEM Ore. (KPTV) - "The Salem City Council voted during a public hearing Monday night to approve a four-month moratorium on the development and construction of #datacenters across the city.
"The temporary ban remains in effect until Jan. 19, during which the city cannot approve any data center applications regardless of their size, capacity or intended purpose. Councilors plan to reexamine the issue and consider whether to extend the freeze in January.

"A recent statewide assessment conducted by economic consulting firm ECONorthwest and the University of Virginia, funded by The Lemelson Foundation identified 111 operational data centers across Oregon, which consumed more than 14 terawatt-hours of electricity last year. That total equals about 71% of all electricity sold to Oregon households combined. Power usage by the sector has nearly quadrupled since 2020 and could account for approximately one-third of the state’s entire electricity demand by 2030."

I've finally settled down from my Reddit "discussion" about the new data centres that are set to open in my state.
It's hard to say if they were a shill or just genuinely brainwashed by the whole venture, but they kept saying "It's good for the community, it'll bring jobs. They're sponsoring local sports[ball] teams."
In their claims that it was a clean industry, as opposed to the smelter at one of the sites, they refused to engage with comments that it's a PFA disaster.
And when I mentioned that the minerals needed for it all were mined unethically, they refused to engage.
I was fairly patient with this person at first, tried to get them to see these different facets, gave them links and stats, but they were so steadfast on their ideas that I gave up after a while.
However, I looked back through the thread earlier, and noted that my posts countering the shills were upvoted, and they were downvoted.
It's a good reminder to myself that doing these things isn't trying to convince the shill/troll but making sure that other people see the misinformation that they're spewing.

There are some data centres that have been approved in my state and I spent all afternoon on Reddit arguing with shills to counter their misinformation for other people who might read it and now I'm exhausted.
I never wanted to learn about data centres or pollution or PFAs or any such things. But I feel like the people are getting bamboozled and I've got to counter it.

"Officials in #PageAZ, a small city near the Glen Canyon Dam, passed a land sale agreement last fall that establishes a framework for future construction of a data center.
"The sale of the 500-acre parcel about a mile away from the Colorado River’s #HorseshoeBend — one of the most visited natural landmarks in the #GlenCanyon National Recreation Area — to #HuntleyLLC for $7 million specifies that the company intends to build a 1 gigawatt data center.
"Residents have been pushing back and launched a petition earlier this year to stop the planned data center from being built.
