Mystery #Humming Noise Heard Across US States
By Marni Rose McFall
Mar 25, 2026 at 01:21 PM EDT"Americans across several states are reporting hearing a strange humming noise in their neighborhoods, and residents think they know the culprit: #DataCenters.
But these centers are especially resource hungry—particularly for electricity and water—which has led to concerns for residents.
According to a study from The Environmental and Energy Study Institute, data centers emit sounds 'from the humming of cooling systems, rumbling of diesel generators, and whirring of fans, which can be heard for hundreds of feet around them.'
What To Know
In Vineland, New Jersey, residents have said there is a persistent humming noise they believe is coming from a nearby data center."

Scientists have found an alarming #EnvironmentalImpact of vast #DataCenters
Story by Laura Paddison, March 30, 2026
Excerpt: "They found surface temperatures increased by an average of 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit after a data center started operations. In extreme cases, nearby temperatures increase by up to 16.4 degrees Fahrenheit.
"These increases were consistent across the globe, the researchers found. In #Mexico’s #Bajio region, for example, which has become a data center hub, the study found unexplained temperature rises of around 3.6 degrees over the last 20 years. A similar situation was seen in #AragonSpain, a European center for #hyperscale #AIDataenters, which recorded a temperature increase of 3.6 degrees which was not replicated in neighboring provinces.
"Strikingly, the impacts weren’t limited to a data center’s immediate surroundings; temperature increases affected areas up to 6.2 miles away, the research found, affecting more than 340 million people.
"The findings are particularly alarming, the scientists say, because AI data centers are set to boom over the next few years, and these temperature rises come as planet-warming pollution is already making #HeatWaves more extreme around the world."

"In a detailed report released last week, titled The Urgent Case Against #DataCenters, #FWW pointed to some of the 'documented harms caused by #AI and data centers,' including:
- Enormous #energy footprints: A single hyperscale data center can consume as much energy as 2 million US households.
- A lifeline for #FossilFuels: The thirst for fuel is being met by keeping old #coal-fired power plants running and by building new natural gas ones. [And restarting old #NuclearPlants]
- Skyrocketing electricity costs: Increased #EnergyDemand can raise residential rates, which soared 31% from 2020 to 2025 (compared to 4% from 2015 to 2020).
- Drained water resources: By 2028, AI data centers could use as much water as 18.5 million households, just for cooling their servers.
- An investment bubble: A handful of companies are investing in one another and increasingly turning to risky debt structures to hide the threat of the bubble.
- A litany of other harms: This includes massive amounts of electronic waste (#EWaste), unrelenting noise pollution, loss of #farmland, political instability from #deepfake videos, lost revenue from data center tax incentives, and #ChildEndangerment from #AI #chatbots."#NoDatacenters #NoAI

With First-of-Its-Kind Bill, #BernieSanders and #AOC Propose #Moratorium on New #AI #DataCenters
“These massive facilities are sucking up precious #water resources, paving over #farmland, driving #ClimateChange, and disrupting the fabric of communities,” said one supporter of the new legislation.
by Jake Johnson, Mar 25, 2026
"Two of the leading progressives in the US Congress, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, announced legislation on Wednesday that would impose a nationwide moratorium on the construction of new artificial intelligence data centers amid mounting concerns over their insatiable consumption of power and water resources, impacts on the climate, and other harms.
"Sanders’ (I-Vt.) office said in a press release announcing the #ArtificialIntelligence #DataCenterMoratorium Act that the construction pause would remain in effect 'until strong national safeguards are in place to protect workers, consumers, and communities, defend privacy and #CivilRights, and ensure these technologies do not harm our #environment.'
"Sanders and #OcasioCortez (D-NY) are set to formally introduce their legislation at a press conference on Wednesday at 4 pm ET.
"Food & Water Watch (#FWW), which last year became the first national organization in the US to call for a total moratorium on the approval of new AI data centers, celebrated the first-of-its-kind bill and called on other members of Congress to 'move quickly to sponsor, champion, and pass' it. FWW’s groundbreaking call for a national AI data center moratorium was later echoed by hundreds of advocacy organizations at the state and national levels.
" 'We need a halt to the explosive growth of new AI data center construction now, because political and community leaders across the country have been caught completely off guard by this aggressive, profit-hungry industry,' Mitch Jones, FWW’s managing director of policy and litigation, said in a statement Wednesday. 'It has yet to be determined if—not how—the industry can ever operate in a manner that sufficiently protects people and society from the profusion of inherent hazards and harms that data centers bring wherever they appear.' "

No more #Maine #DataCenters for now, lawmakers say
Lawmakers advanced a measure that drew attention last month when one senator said it could kill a previously unannounced project in Sanford.
by Daniel Kool, Posted March 5, Updated March 6, 2026
"Maine lawmakers voted Thursday to advance a bill that would stop the development of new data centers in the state for more than a year.
"The bill, #LD307, would create a temporary limitation on data centers with electric loads of at least 20 megawatts by preventing the state, local governments and quasi-governmental agencies from issuing permits or other approvals until 90 days after the first session of the 133rd Legislature adjourns.
"That will likely be around October 2027, the bill’s sponsor, said Rep. Melanie Sachs, D-Freeport.
"That would give a new “Data Center Coordination Council,” also created by the bill, time to study and review the potential impacts of building the centers in Maine. The Department of Energy Resources would be responsible for convening the body.
"Sachs has said the restriction is designed to address future growth without impeding projects that are already well underway, such as one pegged for the former Loring Air Force Base.
"Members of the Legislature’s Energy, Utilities and Technology Committee have debated the bill for weeks.
"On Thursday, they voted 8-5 in favor of passing the bill with amendments, sending it to the broader Legislature. The committee vote fell along party lines, with Democrats supporting the measure."

More #DataCenters coming to #Illinois as residents complain about #noise, electric bills: What to know
by Jason Knowles, Maggie Green, Feb 17, 2026
Excerpt: "When David Szala moved into his Aurora home in 2015, he knew he was by a data center.
" 'You can hear it as soon as you walk out. Fans, just constant with the noise,' Szala said.
"But in recent years, the #CyrusOne #DataCenter campus has expanded significantly.
"Szala and his neighbor, Bryan Castro, both say they hear cooling fans all day and night, and sometimes, generators create more noise.
" 'You feel it in your bones,' Szala said.
"Castro says the buzzing bounces through his backyard, which looked a lot different when he moved there in 2007.
" 'You can feel the vibrations in the house,' Castro said. 'This was 25 acres of nothing but forest.' "

So, knowing the area, my guess is that they want to build this #datacenter in #SanfordME. However, once again, datacenter proponents are like, "Oh hey! We already talked to the Sanford Water District." From the article: "David Parent, superintendent of the Sanford Water District, said he had not heard of any such project." Let me guess. State Senator #MattHarrington got a big fat bonus from the mysterious Datacenter Wizard / Con Artist! Also, both #LewistonME and #WiscassetME have REJECTED datacenters!
