"Whether or not one agrees with such ideas, it’s a discussion that free people are within their rights to have. Though we often treat #capitalism as a national religion, there’s nothing sacred about it. Even the US Constitution is surprisingly agnostic on questions of economic organization. It’s not encoded in our DNA—in fact, we are much more naturally inclined toward cooperation than competition. Humans have a virtually infinite number of ways we can arrange society, and we are in desperate need of rethinking ours.
"Because for the last few decades, the American economy has grown ever more off-balance, to the point where many analysts now say we’re in a second #GildedAge. We recently minted the world’s first trillionaire, while about half of us would be wiped out by any major illness, accident, or job loss. Workers have lost power, essentials like housing and healthcare are increasingly out of reach, and practically all the gains of our productivity have been accumulated at the very top, with #corporations posting record profits. #Billionaires are multiplying their wealth faster than ever, building anti-revolution doomsday bunkers, and plotting to rule their own fiefdoms as #CEOKings.
"We live in a society that’s obsessed with law and order for things like #shoplifting or overstaying a visa, but largely looks the other way on #CorporateCrimes like #pollution, #WageTheft, and #fraud—not to mention #WarCrimes and #genocide. The president is a convicted felon who wants you to ignore his decades-long friendship with a child sex trafficker and instead fear and hate the immigrant next door.
"In such a system, elites should feel relieved that people are only demanding, say, a few public options for groceries, rather than revolting. The wealthy surely all took note of the public reaction to #LuigiMangione, who is accused of murdering United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson on the streets of New York City. Mangione became a cultural icon who was openly celebrated in many circles, making clear the rage simmering within America’s dispossessed.
"There’s a reason the progressive California Rep. #RoKhanna refers to a tax on wealth as an #AntiRevolution tax, or an attempt to save capitalism from itself. Progressive Democrats like Khanna often mediate between capitalist centers of power and the party’s left-wing base, who largely feel fed up with the party’s incremental approach of making small tweaks here and there. Democratic socialism, as practiced in today’s America, is still essentially incrementalism, but they’re much bigger increments.
"Such a model works well in places like #Finland, #Iceland, and #Denmark. These countries have high taxes, but they get far more out of them than we do. As a result they are consistently ranked as the happiest countries on Earth, with excellent numbers for education, homelessness, poverty, healthcare, life expectancy, and infant mortality—all areas in which the US, with its profit-first approach to every problem, is lagging behind.
"#HighTaxes and a mixed economy also once worked well in the #UnitedStates. We dug ourselves out of the #GreatDepression with the #NewDeal. Government programs brought electricity to rural areas and established safety nets and Social Security. Our middle class boomed after World War II, when taxes were the highest they’ve ever been.
"#Republicans and #BigBusiness called that #socialism, too. They even conspired to overthrow President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Now, faced with another socialist menace, they’re playing just as dirty."

Not typically a fan of Rabbi Ruttenberg, but this is an interesting, provocative thought-piece.
"Nobody would think twice about demanding a #reasonableaccommodation if #corporations asked #Jews to start violating #Shabbat or partaking of the #pork BBQ at the #company retreat against their own practice. And while I would not demand that every #Jew request such an #accommodation (for Shabbat or keeping #kosher), they should absolutely have that option available, even if their #religious practice is a work in progress. So too, here.
And despite seeing many people (including religious Jews!) eliding the moral and religious issues around #AI because "that train has already left the station," we should make choices based on whether they are right or wrong. Also, it's a fallacy: Movements grow from dissent."

July 19, 2025"#Kayakers who say they oppose the direction the U.S. Supreme Court has taken the country took to the water Saturday morning to protest near the seasonal home of Chief Justice John Roberts Jr.
"The flotilla launched its kayaks from the new public landing in Port Clyde and paddled a few hundred yards to Roberts’ home on Hupper Island.
"The chief justice and his wife Jane Roberts purchased the home in June 2006. He typically spends time at the seasonal home after the high court recesses for the summer. Their chief residence is in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
Signs voicing opposition to the #SupremeCourt’s rulings were brought in the kayaks, and others lined the waterfront."Signs referred to rulings that they said harm the #LBTQ community, the overturning of campaign spending limits for #corporations in the #CitizensUnited case in 2010, the overturning of a woman’s right to #abortion in 2022, and more recent rulings that grant the president immunity from actions taken while president.
"Organizer Susan MacNeil-Densmore said earlier this week she is affiliated with the organization #AudacityCAT (#CreativeActionTogether) which has been active locally working to resist #authoritarianism, but said the event was not really part of any specific organization."

29 Jul 2024"Increasing violence in northern Nicaragua this year has displaced rural families and led to calls for more drastic action from the international community, which activists say hasn’t done enough to hold the #Ortega government accountable for human rights abuses.
"For years, Indigenous communities on Nicaragua’s northern #Caribbean coast have suffered threats, kidnappings, torture and unlawful arrests while defending communal territory from #IllegalSettlements and #mining. This year appears to be as bad as ever, and residents say they are desperate for help.
"'Urgent measures must be taken to protect these communities,' said Gloria Monique de Mees, the OAS rapporteur on the rights of Afro-descendants and against racial discrimination. 'Failure to address the crisis will only embolden the Nicaraguan government to continue its repressive campaign.'
"Much of the violence is concentrated within the North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region (#RACCN), a jurisdiction communally governed and titled by Indigenous communities since the late 1980s. It’s home to #Miskitus, #Mayangnas, #Ulwa, #Ramas, #Creole and #Garífunas peoples, and contains mountain, #rainforest and coastal #ecosystems.
"The area has attracted non-Indigenous Nicaraguans, known locally as #colonos, looking to set up #farms, #logging operations and artisanal #mines. Massive #gold and #copper deposits have also created opportunities for multinational mining #corporations, with backing from the government.
"Indigenous communities say they’re worried about losing #AncestralLand as well as traditional farming, hunting and fishing practices as the forest is cleared and mines #pollute local streams and rivers."

Thu 18 Jun 2020"The #HoustonPolice foundation has purchased for the local police department a variety of equipment, including #SWAT equipment, sound equipment and dogs for the K-9 unit, according to the report. The #PhiladelphiaPolice foundation purchased for its police force #LongGuns, #drones and #BallisticHelmets, and the #AtlantaPolice foundation helped fund a major #surveillance network of over 12,000 cameras.
"In addition to weaponry, foundation funding can also go toward specialized training and support programs that complement the department’s policing strategies, according to one police foundation.
“'Not a lot of people are aware of this public-private partnership where corporations and wealthy donors are able to siphon money into police forces with little to no oversight,' said Gin Armstrong, a senior research analyst at #LittleSis.
"A variety of companies – including financial institutions, technology companies, retailers, local universities and sports teams, provide funding to police foundations. Donations may be, in part, to curry favor with a force that exists primarily to protect property and #capital, the report said."

"Duck Valley Paiute-Shoshone Council Member Addie Parker appealed to the U.N. Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues today, describing the disastrous lithium mining and hydrocarbon plume her people suffer from in northern #Nevada. Parker said there has been extensive #mining here for over 150 years.
"The "new green gold rush" for lithium batteries has brought devastating lithium mining and 'green colonialism.' Currently, there are 70 lithium mining applications in Nevada alone. The so-called 'green' solution actually creates an #environmental nightmare, including the disposal of #batteries.
Parker said there must be a rights-based approach and pointed out that Nevada mining laws are archaic. Paiute Shoshone of #DuckValleyNation opposes more mining and Nevada's new law for increased revenues from mining.
"Since the signing of the Treaty of Ruby Valley in 1863, there has been no mechanism for tribes to share in the benefits of mining. The mining companies are multi-national #corporations and most are from #Canada. They are not required to compensate the people.
"'It violates our Indigenous rights,' Parker said, listing international law violations, including the fre prior, and informed consent as mandated in the UN Declaration on the Rights of #IndigenousPeoples.
President #Biden's order to consult with #tribes is also being violated."Describing the illegal exploration of their resources, she said Paiute-Shoshone children are suffering because of it. 'We can't even get money to build a new school,' Parker said, describing how children are forced to attend school on a #toxic site.
"More than 100 members of the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes of the Duck Valley Nation, on the Nevada #Idaho border, have died over the years due to #cancer. It is a large number for a tribe of about 3,00 people, reports the Las Vegas Review-Journal. There was one thing they had in common: they all attended the same school on the reservation.
"The 70-year-old Owyhee Combined School, where tribal members have been educated for generations, sits adjacent to hydrocarbon plumes that lie underneath the town, Chairman Brian Mason said. He thinks the school, where drinking water was once #contaminated by the plumes, is the root of the problem.'"
