Plan to keep #Navajo #CoalMine open for 110 years runs into opposition
Arlyssa D. Becenti, Feb. 12, 2026
Excerpts: #BurnhamNM — "Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren has been open about his support for keeping the #FourCornersGeneratingStation operating until 2038, along with continued #CoalMining for the next 110 years.
"But community members and #EnvironmentalJustice advocates say the plan ignores the ongoing transition away from #FossilFuels and could endanger the health of people who live nearby. They voiced opposition at a public hearing at the Burnham Chapter Jan. 29.
"The Four Corners station, a coal-fired power plant near #FruitlandMN, is operated by Arizona Public Service Company and is scheduled to close as early 2031, and no later than 2038. In 2013, the Navajo Nation formed Navajo Transitional Energy Company to acquire the Navajo Mine from #BHP #BillitonNM Coal.
"Since then, #NTEC has also acquired coal mines in #Wyoming and #Montana, and in July 2018, NTEC acquired a 7% ownership stake in Units 4 and 5 of the Four Corners plant. Now NTEC plans to expand Navajo Mine and operate it for the next 110 years, until 2136, with support from Nygren and council delegates.

"#Trump orders fuel energy initiatives on #NavajoNation
"The attempt to expand coal mining on the Navajo Nation for 110 years comes after President Donald Trump signed his executive order Reinvigorating America’s Beautiful Clean Coal Industry and Amending Executive Order 14241 in April 2025.
"The order said that to keep the U.S. economy strong, protect national security, and lower living costs, the country needs to produce more energy at home, including coal. Another order, 'Immediate Measures to Increase American Mineral Production,' was signed in March, aiming to accelerate domestic production of critical minerals by streamlining permitting, financing, and federal land use processes.
"Since Trump signed the orders, the Navajo Nation has accelerated efforts to establish a dedicated energy office. While the idea had been discussed under previous administrations, it has only recently gained momentum. The office would function as a centralized body to coordinate energy policy, regulatory oversight and long-term energy development.
"Other actions by Navajo Nation leadership aimed at engaging with this renewed federal focus include holding public hearings on the potential revitalization of coal and continuing work related to #uranium production and the cleanup of legacy #contamination."

Coal Mines, #OilAndGas #Methane and #Uranium Transport: Deadly Mix on
the #NavajoNationBy Dine' CARE, Censored News, July 23, 2026
Dine' CARE (Citizens Against Ruining our Environment)
#WindowRock, #NavajoNation -- "On Monday, #DinéCARE. hosted a press conference with #BurnhamNM residents and other coal impacted community members at the Navajo Nation Council
Chambers."They called for the Navajo Transitional Energy Company (#NTEC) to withdraw its No Name Permit application, which seeks a 110-year, 11,526-acre coal mine expansion.
"The proposal threatens health, the environment, and Navajo cultural heritage.
"The Burnham Chapter formally opposed the permit in February 2026, citing incomplete materials, inadequate impact review, and lack of transparency.
"Advocates demand a thorough Environmental Impact Statement (#EIS), coal supply plan disclosure beyond 2031, and accountability from leaders. A decision is expected next month."

#CoalMining Devastated the #Water and Brought #BlackLungDisease -- #ForestLake Hearing on #Coal
by #TóNizhóníÁní, #CensoredNews

June 6, 2025"On Friday, May 30, 2025, the Office of the Speaker held a public hearing on coal at the Forest Lake Chapter House in Forest Lake (Tsiiyi’ Be’ak’id), Arizona. This open forum allowed participants to share their input and comments regarding the Federal Executive Order 14241, “Reinvigorating America’s Beautiful Clean Coal Industry,” aimed at amending federal policies to boost the #CoalIndustry. This public hearing came after community opposition and frustration to Navajo Nation President #BuuNygren ’s support of President #Trump’s executive orders to prop up coal. The public hearing generated over 50 public comments, more than 169 people in attendance.
"Tó Nizhóní Ání executive director #NicoleHorseherder was one of the first to provide comments in opposition of coal siting the decades-long impacts on the land and water. “The bottom line is coal mining has had adverse impacts to the aquifers and that’s Navajo water. What is Navajo going to do about it?' said Nicole as she provided a brief overview of the coal mining and reclamation issues at the #KayentaMine.
"The federal agencies responsible for overseeing reclamation and cleanup acknowledged, verbally, that their duties are to the shallow #aquifers impacted by coal but mentioned the deep aquifers are the responsibility of the Department of Interior. These are just one of many issues impacting the #BlackMesa region, which played host to the coal industry for over 50 years."https://bsnorrell.blogspot.com/2025/06/to-nizhoni-ani-coal-mining-devastated.html

#NavajoNation Targeted Again for Sacrifice Zone: '#Energy Companies Preying on the People'
#Diné ask: Why is the Navajo Nation allowing energy companies to prey on communities and individuals?
By Brenda Norrell, Censored News, May 23, 2024
"Dine' on the Navajo Nation are now targeted with a push to revitalize dirty coal energy, and a hydropower project that would pump precious water from their aquifer. Dine' question why the Navajo Nation government is allowing energy companies to prey on the communities and individuals.
"#LouiseBenally of #BigMountain [#KleeBenally's aunt] said the bottom line is greed. 'They want to eat up everything but, don't know that even their lives depend on it too. Poisoning the natural cycle will come back and destroy them too.'
"The new stampede of parasitic energy companies to the Navajo Nation comes at the same time that #radioactive #uranium trucks, covered only with tarps, are traveling across the Navajo Nation, from the #GrandCanyon uranium mine to the mill in the #WhiteMesaUte community in Utah.
"At the same time, more than 500 #UraniumMines, and scattered radioactive debris, remain on the Navajo Nation, and was never cleaned up by the U.S. government. Dirty coal mines and power plants left the legacy of death and #ForcedRelocation.
Navajo Council Plans Meeting on Revitalizing Coal Industry
"Citing #Trump's push for new #CoalMining, the #NavajoNationCouncil plans to hold a public hearing on
revitalizing the coal industry.
"The Navajo Nation Council announced the public hearing, stating that on April 8 President Donald Trump issued an Executive Order entitled, 'Reinvigorating America’s #BeautifulCleanCoal Industry
and Amending Executive Order 14241' aimed at reversing past federal policies, to boost the coal industry and to strengthen the country’s national energy security, according to the White House."The public hearing is scheduled in Forest Lake Chapter on Friday, May 30. Louise Benally and her family spent their lives battling #PeabodyCoal and resisting forced relocation at Big Mountain on #BlackMesa. She said what Trump is doing is another chapter in the assault on the land and people.
" 'Pl 93-531 is a law created by #BarryGoldwater to target our rights to water and land base to be taken away. He developed that law so, with what Trump is trying to do is no different.'" 'They want to eat up everything but, don't know that even their lives depend on it too. Poisoning the natural cycle will come back and destroy them too.'
" 'The American political system is not our government as traditional people which is where all our modern day problems come from in the form of an endless greed to keep eating up the earth and the natural resources.'
"Louise questioned Navajo Nation President #BuuNygren's support of Trump and coal mining in Washington, and Nygren's agreement for uranium trucks to cross the Navajo Nation. 'The Navajo Nation government is at a crossroads. Buu has been taken by Trump, and the people he is supposed to be responsible for are in question.'
" 'He has been taken into the bag of greed -- uranium and coal yet, there is no water. We want accountability.' "

#FlagstaffAZ: Radioactive #Uranium Truck Driver in Medical Distress: Endangerment on the Haul Route
by Shannonlynn Chester,,May 8, 2025, #CensoredNews
Excerpt: "The Navajo Nation, law enforcement and the mainstream media downplayed the risks today to Navajos and everyone on the haul route.
"This comes after Navajo President #BuuNygren cut a secret deal with #EnergyFuels for the uranium transport trucks to pass through the Navajo Nation.
Nygren released a statement about the sick truck driver. Nygren said the Navajo Nation EPA coordinated with the Coconino County Sheriff's Office and the Flagstaff Fire Department. The Fire Department conducted radiation scans on the truck and said that the radiation levels at the location were within safe limits."Three other uranium ore trucks at the designated inspection site were allowed to pass and continue to the White Mesa Mill, Nygren said.
Energy Fuels notified the Navajo Nation EPA at 11:40 a.m. that the fourth truck -- whose driver was sick -- returned back to the Pinyon Plain Mine, Nygren said.
Coconino County Sheriff Bret Axlund said the truck driver had "flu-like symptoms" and refused medical transport from the site. An ambulance was called to the site, just north of Flagstaff, in the area of Hwy 89 and Townsend Winona Road."Earlier, the Navajo Nation Council said President Nygren entered into a secret deal with Energy Fuels, without the knowledge or consent of the #NavajoCouncil, to allow the uranium ore trucks to pass through the Navajo Nation from the #GrandCanyon mine enroute to Utah.
"More than 500 uranium mines and scattered radioactive waste remain on the Navajo Nation, which the U.S. never cleaned up after the #coldwar, resulting in widespread cancer for Dine'."Read more:

Tensions escalate among #Navajo leaders as #BuuNygren finally agrees to address #NavajoNationCouncil
Delegates accused #Nygren of “mocking” collaboration after he skipped Monday’s session despite a subpoena
by Shondiin Silversmith, Apr 25, 2025
Excerpt: "In a statement posted on social media, Nygren said he was traveling to #WashingtonDC, to meet with federal partners [in the #Trump administration].
" 'This trip underscores my commitment to working collaboratively, regardless of political affiliation—be it Republican or Democratic—to advocate for our Nation’s needs and priorities,' he wrote on Facebook. [You know, like allowing radioactive material transport through their lands without notification, or turning their reservation into an extension of ICE].
"Nygren said that he fulfilled his 'obligations' to the Navajo Nation Council by submitting a written report, which aligns with the requirements of Title 2 of the Navajo Nation Code.
" 'This action demonstrates my commitment to transparency and accountability to the Navajo people,' he added.
"Curley said working with federal partners is important, but the president must also report to the Navajo people and engage in meaningful dialogue with the Council members.
" 'What we’re seeing from President Nygren is a lot of one-way communication directed at the Navajo people through radio, livestreams, newsletters, social media, and now a written report,' Curley said in a press release.
" 'The Navajo people want to hear President Nygren present his report in person and to have an in-depth dialogue with the Council,' she added. 'Yes, it’s important to work with our federal partners, but President Nygren also needs to work with our #Diné leaders as he promised when he campaigned for the presidency.'
"During Monday’s opening day of the spring session, several Navajo Nation Council delegates voiced their concerns about Nygren’s administration. They cited repeated absences, unilateral decision-making, and alleged misrepresentations made to both federal partners and the Council.
" 'We’ve been patient and willing to work with him,' Navajo Nation Council Delegate #BrendaJesus said. 'But enough is enough. At what point does the Navajo Nation Council show that we mean business? He’s not honoring our collaboration — he’s mocking it.' "

#Diné Coalition Opposes #Navajo President's Push for #CoalMining and #Uranium Transport
Dine' Coalition Press Statement, #CensoredNews, April 17, 2025
WINDOW ROCK, Arizona -- "A coalition of grassroots groups released a statement in response to recent announcements and actions by #NavajoNation President #BuuNygren regarding coal development, carbon market deals, and potential new mining projects.
"The coalition will host a Press Conference from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (MDT) on Monday, April 21, 2025, outside the Navajo Nation Council Chambers during the first day of the Navajo Nation Council’s Spring Session. Please bring a folding chair, water, hats, and sunscreen, and dress appropriately for the weather to keep yourself safe and comfortable during the Press Conference.
"Summary of full statement:
● We call on the Navajo Nation President to stop making deals that degrade our land, water, and future.
● We urge tribal leaders not to repeat historical mistakes with respect to uranium extraction: Leave this Nayee’, Łeetso, in the ground. The cleanup and remediation of hundreds of abandoned mines must be completed, prioritizing public health safety and ecosystem health.
● We stand against the transport of uranium ore across the Navajo Nation because it is inconsistent with the intent of the Navajo Radioactive and Related Substances, Equipment, Persons and Materials Transportation Act of 2012, regardless of jurisdictional limits on our highways and roads.
● We steadfastly OPPOSE coal development, which negatively impacts the lands, water, and health of the Navajo people and contributes to #ClimateChange.
● We stand in protection of our water, health, traditional lifeways, Earth bundles (#Jish), and #MotherEarth.
"We call on all Diné #LandDefenders, #WaterProtectors, healers, young leaders, #matriarchs and warriors to stand together at WINDOW ROCK on APRIL 21, 2025. Together, we will make our voices heard and remind our Navajo Nation government that they are entrusted to make decisions that protect our People and protect our sacred homelands.
Statement from Diné Coalition of Grassroots Organizers in response to Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren’s recent statements and actions regarding uranium, carbon markets, coal, and
other harmful extractive processes.
We are a coalition of Diné organizers, land defenders, water protectors, traditional knowledge holders, matriarchs, and young leaders. We are calling on our Diné people to stand united in protecting Mother Earth and our sacred homelands and waterways."The Nygren Administration’s recent statements and actions do not reflect the
will of the Diné People, and we call on our Navajo Nation Council to ensure that such actions are not taken in violation of our Free, Prior, and Informed Consent."With the Trump administration’s announced intent to ramp up production of 'mission-critical' uranium,
the private energy offenders are again targeting Diné lands with no intention of ensuring public health, safety, or environmental health. Diné land and water protectors understand that energy offenders operate through systematic #racism that does not adhere to

#Radioactive #Uranium Trucks -- Slick Politicians and Easy-Chair Journalists
Endanger PublicArticle by #BrendaNorrell, Censored News, April 17, 2025

"The #UraniumMine is spewing out #RadioactiveDust for the world travelers who love this place, poisoning traditional medicine plants, and endangering the aquifer for future generations.
"#Navajo President #BuuNygren secretly did a deal with the owners, #EnergyFuels, to bring radioactive #uranium ore trucks through the #NavajoNation, without the #NavajoNationCouncil's knowledge.
"This agreement for radioactive trucks, shown here [at the link below], is an extreme danger for everyone on the transport route -- #Havasupai, #Paiute, #Dine', #Hopi, #Ute, and the residents of #FlagstaffAZ.
"Remote Native communities have no way to deal with radioactive spills.

Deadly Coal Mining is a Photo-Op for Navajo President and the Media is Part of the Game
By #BrendaNorrell, Censored News, April 12, 2025
"The media covered up the true history of #coal mining on #BlackMesa. Now, #Navajo President #BuuNygren is pushing and celebrating #CoalMining, and was in D.C. for photo ops doing it.
"Peabody Coal didn't just dig up coal -- they dug up Dine' from their burial places, and Dine' were put in museums. Dine' graves were dug up for 16 years, and cultural items were looted by a team from Prescott College, and millions of items were taken to Southern Illinois University. The Navajo government granted #Peabody Coal its lease and knew about the robbing of graves of Dine' at the time.

#Havasupai Tribe Deeply Disappointed in #NavajoNation for Failing to Consult Havasupai on #Radioactive Hauling
"Shame on Energy Fuels Resources and those who were not brave enough to do what is right and necessary." -- Havasupai Tribe.
By Brenda Norrell, Censored News, Feb. 14, 2025
"The Havasupai Tribe said the Navajo Nation has disregarded the aboriginal people who live on the land, and failed to consult them before entering into a dangerous agreement for #radioactive #uranium hauling. There are two trucks now each weekday, traveling at high rates of speed, each carrying 24 tons of radioactive matter that is only covered with tie-down tarps from the Grand Canyon to the #UraniumMill in Utah.
"Havsuw' Baaja, Havasupai, are Guardians of the #GrandCanyon and have opposed #UraniumMining since time immemorial to protect their land and water for future generations, the Havasupai Tribe said today.
"We are deeply disappointed in #EnergyFuels Resources, Inc., and the Navajo Nation for not including us in their discussions that ultimately led to the dangerous decision to allow hauling of radioactive material across our aboriginal lands," the Havasupai Tribe said.
"The Navajo Tribe is not the only tribe or community affected by this activity."

🚨 Alert: #RadioactiveUranium Trucks on the #NavajoNation Today (2/12)
"A banner on the deadly haul route today, Wednesday, as two radioactive uranium transport trucks pass by Dine' homes in #TubaCity on the Navajo Nation. #Dine' families said they had no warning and the #NavajoGovernment sold them out."
By Brenda Norrell, Censored News, Feb. 12, 2025
Live and UpdatingTUBA CITY, Navajo Nation -- "#EnergyFuels #radioactive #UraniumWaste trucks passed through the Navajo Nation today, following a secretive agreement between the Navajo Nation and Energy Fuels.
"Two radioactive uranium waste trucks passed through #TubaCity headed to the uranium mill in the #WhiteMesaUte community, between 11 a.m. and noon today.
"In a region still strewn with #RadioactiveWaste from the #ColdWar, and gas and oil wells choking the people -- now uranium waste being transported by Dine' homes with only a tarp [!!!] covering tons of radioactive waste. The trucks are dumping their loads in the White Mesa #Ute community at the mill in southeastern #Utah.
"The secretive agreement between Energy Fuels and the Navajo Nation government, says there will be two to twelve trucks a day with radioactive waste from Energy Fuels #PinyonPlain #UraniumMine in the #GrandCanyon, for the next three to four years.
"Navajo Utah Commission members voiced their opposition to the uranium transport during a meeting with Navajo Nation EPA Executive Director #StephenEtsitty in #WindowRock on Tuesday. This comes after Energy Fuels made a public announcement of the agreement with the tribe.
"The Navajo Utah Commission meeting revealed that Energy Fuels agreed to pay the Navajo Nation government $1.2 million during the negotiations. Dine' in Western Navajo said that Navajo President #BuuNygren showed them how much money their lives are worth: $1.2 million."

#NavajoNation Dishonors Legacy of #KleeBenally: Agrees to #Uranium Transport Through #Navajo Communities
By #BrendaNorrell, #CensoredNews, February 3, 2025
"The Navajo Nation dishonored the memory and legacy of Klee Benally by agreeing to allow radioactive uranium trucks to travel through the Navajo Nation. It was what Klee spent the last years of his life fighting against.
"The deadly trucks from the #EnergyFuels #PinyonPlain uranium mine in the #GrandCanyon will pass through the #Havasupai's homeland, and then past the homes of #Paiute, #Dine' and #Hopi in Arizona before reaching the dumping ground: The Energy Fuels #UraniumMill in the #WhiteMesaUte Community in Southern #Utah.
"Klee is being honored with a #NuclearFreeFutures Award in New York in March.
"Nuclear Free Futures said, in announcing the award, 'Klee Benally was a Navajo activist and musician and member of the Navajo #Tódichiinii Clan and the #Nakai #Diné Clan. In addition to a
musical career with his siblings in the band #Blackfire,"'Klee was a passionate campaigner and filmmaker exposing the #colonialist legacy of uranium mines and working for the cleanup of the more than 500 abandoned uranium mines that continue to contaminate the Navajo Nation. A month before his death on December 30, 2023, Klee published his book, '#NoSpiritualSurrender: #IndigenousAnarchy in Defense of the Sacred.'
"The award will be accepted by his mother Berta Benally.
"Klee, co-founder of #HaulNo!, warned of the danger to the water and rivers from the uranium mining in the Grand Canyon, and the planned deadly transport of radioactive ore, before he passed in
December 2023: 'There is possible radioactive contamination to land, water, and air from the #CanyonMine, White
Mesa Mill, and transport of uranium would impact northern Arizona, southeast Utah, the #ColoradoRiver, #MoenkopiWash, the #SanJuanRiver, and the lands and cultural resources of the #Havasupai, Hopi, Navajo, Ute, and Paiute peoples.'"Read more:

#NavajoNation is 'Back Peddling' by Allowing #Uranium Transport through #Dine' Communities and More Dumping on #Utes
By Brenda Norrell, Censored News, Feb. 8, 2025
TUBA CITY -- "#LeonaMorgan, Dine' co-founder of #HaulNo!, said the Navajo Nation is now "back peddling" by allowing radioactive uranium waste to be transported through Dine' communities. This radioactive transport from the #GrandCanyon means even more deadly waste for another Native community -- the #WhiteMesaUte community in #Utah.
"Now, with little or no information along the haul route, the Navajo government expects the Dine' Chapters on the route to each have an emergency preparedness plan. Leona asked if the Dine' communities are aware of this and whether the Navajo Chapters are certified to deal with radioactive emergencies.
"'Who are their First Responders?' Ultimately, Dine' will have to confront the Navajo President and the Navajo Department of Justice, she said.
'We were not included in that agreement,' Leona said of the agreement between the Navajo Nation and #Energy Fuels."'There was no free, prior and informed consent,' Leona said, quoting the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples [#UNDRIP]. 'The people in the communities were not consulted.'
"'How can they start transporting on February 12th, when there aren't even any checkpoints? We don't even have an #AirMonitoring system,' Leona said of the lack of preparation for radioactive
transport on the Navajo Nation.
Energy Fuels plans to pass through Navajo communities with six to ten trucks of radioactive waste,
beginning on Feb. 12, 2025.
"Leona urged communities to organize, and pointed out that Navajo Chapters can have their own checkpoints. With the new push for '#DrillBabyDrill,' by the U.S. President, the Navajo Nation faces an uncertain future, she said. The U.S. is investing money into the development of #CriticalEarthMinerals and investing in Energy Fuels mill at White Mesa Ute."'We need to push our government to do what we want -- not what the federal government wants.'
"'It's going to get worse because they think nuclear is clean energy,' Leona said of the push for alternative energy.
"The Navajo Nation's agreement with Energy Fuels means more dangerous radioactive dumping in the #WhiteMesaUte community. In the agreement, Energy Fuels states it will transport 10,000 tons of uranium-bearing cleanup materials from abandoned #UraniumMines within the Navajo Nation.
"Leona was recently voted by the Navajo Nation Council to serve on the Diné #UraniumRemediation Advisory Commission, in an advisory position to the Navajo President and Council."Speaking in #TubaCity on Saturday, Leona said Haul No! began in 2016 when it became known that the Pinyon Plain uranium mine would begin mining in the Grand Canyon. Now, there is the new battle as the Navajo Nation government has approved uranium transport through Navajo communities to the White Mesa Ute community.
"Energy Fuels #PinyonPlain Mine, and the mill in southern Utah, threaten Native communities throughout the region."

Hey #BuuNygren, maybe listen to what the Diné youth are saying?
#Navajo #protesters say people fear #deportation threats, other changes under #Trump
by Arlyssa D. Becenti, January 29, 2025
WINDOW ROCK — "Bryson Sam and his siblings stood at an intersection in the Navajo Nation capital under gray clouds and a chilly breeze, holding signs that read, 'No Human is Illegal on Stolen Land' and 'Native Youth Deserve Better.' Across the street, another protester waved a #Palestinian flag, holding a sign that read, 'Make White Supremacists Scared Again.'
"The demonstration was their response to events unfolding across the country and in Arizona. Last week, The Arizona Republic reported on unverified claims circulating on social media that Navajo citizens were being detained in connection with President Donald Trump’s executive order on mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.
"'My people outside of the Navajo Nation are getting a lot of backlash, thinking they're immigrants, when no one is illegal on stolen land,' said Sam. 'A lot of Native elders and adults aren't aware because a lot of stuff is being hidden. Native youth like me are aware but our voice feels dim. What happened in the 1920s in Germany is happening now, deportation, concentration camps, it's basically adding up. I don't want to make seem like we are letting it happen. A lot of my people are afraid. A lot of them saying we are scared for our future.'
"Sam said he initially waited for someone else to take action, but instead of standing by, he decided it was up to him to step forward and make his voice heard. He emphasized that his protest is not only about raising awareness of the challenges faced by Native people in urban areas but also about shedding light on the broader threat of targeting of people of color by the Trump administration and ICE.
"'I am afraid not only for my future but for everyone's future,' said Sam. 'Not only Native people, but #BlackPeople, #MexicanPeople, everyone. We are no longer individual tribes we stand together. Whatever feud we may have had back in the day, no more, because now it's time to stand together.'
"Following a meeting last week, leaders have advised tribal members to carry state-issued identification, such as a driver’s license or another form of photo ID if available. Additionally, a Certificate of Indian Blood may be helpful.
"Navajo tribal members affected by ICE raids can contact the Navajo Nation Human Rights Commission Office at (928) 871-7436. People who encounter issues with federal immigration officials can reach out to Operation Rainbow Bridge at 855-435-7672, visit their website at operationrainbowbridge . com, or email info @ operationrainbowbridge . com.

By Neely Bardwell, January 08, 2025
"The Environmental Protection Agency will move #uranium mine waste from #ChurchrockNewMexico to the #RedRock regional landfill where it can be safely stored forever.
"The federal agency signed an action memo to transport radioactive waste at the Quivira Mining Co. Churchrock Mine to a disposal site at the Red Rock regional landfill about six miles east of the Village of Thoreau. The cleanup will begin in early 2025 and continue for 6-8 years.
"For the Red Water Pond Road Community Association (#RWPRCA), which has advocated for waste removal since 2006, the decision marks a significant shift in addressing #UraniumContamination on Navajo land.
"'Removing the mine waste from our community will protect our health and finally put us back on a positive track to #Hózhǫ (balance),' said Teracita Keyanna, RPWPRCA executive committee member. 'I think this decision empowers #grassroots organizations like ours and our allies to continue to advocate and educate to clean up hundreds of abandoned uranium mines that threaten our #Diné communities every day.'
"RWPRCA President Edith Hood said the community has dealt with the impact of uranium mining since the late 1960s. Commercial mining began at the site under #KerrMcGee Corporation, which later became the #QuiviraMiningCompany. The operation extracted an estimated 1.3 million tons of uranium ore before closing in 1986. The Navajo Nation currently has more than 520 documented #AbandonedMines, with no disposal facilities for uranium waste within 350 miles of #TribalLands.
"'Many of us suffer chronic health problems and a degraded homeland as a result,' Hood said. 'We advocate for a regional approach to addressing remediation of nearly 100 abandoned uranium mines in the Eastern Navajo Agency. We are committed to making sure the removal of mine waste from our community does not threaten the health and safety of our Diné neighbors.'
"Previous attempts to address the waste proved unsuccessful. In 2011 and 2013, the EPA and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved a plan to place 1 million cubic yards of waste from NECRM on top of the existing tailings pile located half a mile from RWPRC village. Effectively, neither of those wastes were removed from the communities.
"The #RedRockLandfill currently handles municipal waste from McKinley and Cibola counties and Navajo Nation communities as far away as Tuba City. The planned #UraniumDisposalCell will occupy a separate area of the 640-acre site adjacent to the shuttered #Escalante power plant.
"The Northwest New Mexico Regional Solid Waste Authority (#NNMRSWA), which owns the landfill, must show that its operations can protect #GroundWater, air and soil, while safeguarding public health for decades to come. The New Mexico Environment Department will oversee long-term monitoring of the site.
"Chris Shuey, who has documented mining and #milling impacts in the #Churchrock area for 40 years as an environmental health specialist at Southwest Research and Information Center in Albuquerque, said relocating uranium waste is essential for tribal communities.
"'Removing mine wastes from Navajo communities to engineered, regional disposal sites is a #PublicHealth imperative,' Shuey said, noting that more than half of all Navajo chapters have at least one source of unhealthy uranium exposure. 'The federal government must continue looking for suitable sites for long-term disposal of mine wastes to protect current and future Navajo populations.'
"'This decision will remove over 1 million cubic yards of waste that has haunted the #RedWaterPondRoad and #PipelineRoad communities for too long,' EPA Pacific Southwest Regional Administrator Martha Guzman said in a statement.
"'This solution is a compromise that will get #RadioactiveWaste in this area off of the Navajo Nation as soon as possible,' Navajo Nation President #BuuNygren said in the EPA statement. 'It’s not everything the three affected communities would wish for but it’s action in the right direction now rather than in the future. Most importantly, this will protect our people from harmful exposure.'"

#Protests Against #GrandCanyon #UraniumMine Continue
Saturday, August 24, 2024
Coalition statement, via #CensoredNews
GRAND CANYON, #Arizona — "#Conservation advocates will join Tribal leaders and members Saturday, Aug. 24, to demand the closure of the #PinyonPlain uranium mine that threatens the waters of the Grand Canyon and the #Havasupai Tribe.
What: Protest near #RedButte and the Pinyon Plain Uranium Mine calling on #GovHobbs and federal officials to close the mine.
When: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 24.
Where: Junction of Highway 64 and Forest Service Road 320, 10.5 miles north of Grand Canyon Junction (Valle, Arizona). Here is a map.
Who: Staff and members of the #CenterForBiologicalDiversity, #SierraClub, #ChispaArizona, #WildArizona, National Parks Conservation Association [#NPCA] and other groups will join Havasupai Tribal leaders and members of other Tribes in solidarity and will be available for interviews.
"The mine, which began extracting uranium ore on Jan. 8, is 7 miles south of Grand Canyon National Park, at the foot of sacred Red Butte (Wii'i Gdwiisa in Havasupai), and inside the newly designated Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument.
"Saturday’s protest will come after weeks of recent actions opposing the mine and the hauling of radioactive #UraniumOre across the #NavajoNation, which has called the transportation of uranium across its land an infringement on Tribal sovereignty.
"Earlier this month Navajo Nation President #BuuNygren issued an executive order banning shipments of uranium from the mine across the Nation; hauling is now paused. Soon after Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes called for an updated environmental study on the mine, warning of potential risks of allowing the mine to proceed under the authority of a nearly 40-year-old Environmental Impact Statement.
"In June, Tribal members and conservation groups delivered a petition with more than 17,000 signatures urging Gov. Hobbs to use her authority to close the mine. In January, 80 groups and scientists called on her to do the same. New research indicates that the best way to protect the waters of the region is to shut down the mine."

"In four large #protests last week, thousands of Northern #Arizona residents came together to call on Arizona #GovernorHobbs and #PresidentBiden to close the #PinyonPlain #UraniumMine, which threatens Grand Canyon’s #groundwater, biodiverse springs, and nearby communities, like the #Havasupai Tribe.
"The wave of action was sparked by #NavajoNation President #BuuNygren who sent police to stop the mine’s first uranium shipments from crossing the Nation. Though Gov. Hobbs later brokered a deal to temporarily suspend ore shipments, protestors are demanding that the mine be CLOSED. It’s the is only way to prevent permanent damage to the Grand Canyon region’s environment and people.
"Live near #RedButteArizona? Join the Center, Havasupai Tribe, and other partners on August 24 for another rally calling for the mine’s closure.

"Dine' continued their protests in #CameronArizona, on the #NavajoNation [on Saturday August 3rd]. On Tuesday without notice, two #radioactive trucks carrying uranium passed through their community. The trucks began at the #PinyonPlain #UraniumMine, now threatening #Havasupai water in the #GrandCanyon, and passed through Navajo communities, and past #Hopi villages, before arriving on the ancestral land of #WhiteMesa #Ute in southeastern #Utah. Although Navajo President #BuuNygren deployed tribal police to stop them, Nygren said the trucks reached their destination." -- #CensoredNews"

#NDN LIVE | Walk Against the Illegal Transportation of #Uranium on the #NavajoNation
"We are LIVE on Dinétah at #CameronArizona for the Walk Against the Illegal Transportation of Uranium on the Navajo Nation.
"On July 30, 2024 a uranium company named #EnergyFuels hauled its materials through the Navajo Nation and was stopped and escorted off Navajo lands by the Navajo Police Department by order of #NavajoNation President #BuuNygren.
"A call was made by Navajo Nation First Lady Jasmine Blackwater-Nygren and Diné organizers on August 1, 2024 to walk in opposition to the illegal transport of uranium on Navajo land at Cameron, AZ.
"The assertion of #sovereignty on #IndigenousLands by #IndigenousPeoples for the protection of land, water, life, and people is a major factor in this. The Energy Fuels’ #PinyonPlain #UraniumMine has affected the #Havasupai, #Navajo, #Ute, and #Hopi Nations by #contamination of land and water sources, illegal transport of uranium materials on tribal land, and existing without tribal consultation.
"The Pinyon Plain mine was built in 1990, but the legacy of US nuclear colonialism on Indigenous lands and communities goes back decades prior."

#Navajo President #BuuNygren issues executive order to enforce laws to ban irresponsible, unsafe transport of #radioactive material across #NavajoNation
By Navajo President Buu Nygren, #CensoredNews
July 31, 2024WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. – "Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren today issued an executive order to require an agreement be in place prior to the transport of radioactive material through the Navajo Nation.
"The executive order will be in effect for the next six months.
'This was much needed,' the President said. 'We’re taking this stance of interpreting and executing the law to ensure the safety of our people and respect for Navajo #sovereignty. It’s our job as the executive branch to enforce these laws.'"Citing the Navajo Nation Natural Resources Protection Act of 2005 and the Navajo Nation’s 2012 Radioactive and Related Substances, Equipment, Vehicles, Persons and Materials Transportation Act, he said Navajo laws regarding the transportation of radioactive materials have been in place for well over a decade.
"'We’re a land of laws,' President Nygren said. 'As the executive branch, as the President of the Navajo Nation, we’re here to enforce these laws to make sure nobody’s breaking these laws.'
"Yesterday, #EnergyFuelsResources , Inc., owner of the #PinyonPlainMine south of Grand Canyon did not provide notice to Navajo Nation officials of the transport of and estimated 50 tons of #uranium mine ore through the heart of the Navajo Nation.
"The company’s failure to seek approval from the Navajo Nation for the transport of radioactive materials across its land disregards the Nation’s governmental authority and sovereignty, President Nygren said.
"'If you’re going to smuggle uranium into our borders and across our Nation and outside, that’s pretty much illegal,' he said. 'I’m very disappointed that this is happening in this day and age.'"

#Navajo Nation: Two #Uranium Trucks Reached Mill as Tribal Police Pursued
Navajo President #BuuNygren, Navajo Council Speaker Crystalyne Curley condemn today’s unauthorized transport of uranium ore through Nation
Navajo Nation Statement,
#CensoredNews, July 30, 2024WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. – "Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren this morning deployed the Navajo police to attempt to halt the illegal transportation of uranium ore from the Pinyon Plain Mine to the White Mesa Mill in southeastern Utah.
By the end of the day, he received a report that two trucks carrying the uranium ore had reached Utah."'What was very disappointing today is that we were under the assumption that we would get 10 days or two weeks heads up if that this was going to happen,' he said. 'Then, at the same time, we were made aware that transportation was not going to happen until October or November.'
"The President said he learned at 11:30 a.m. today that the trucks were en route without notification from #EnergyFuels, the owner of the #PinyonPlain Mine, that the transportation of ore was to happen.
"'They snuck through the #NavajoNation and they made it onto the Utah side, outside of the reservation,' the President said. 'To me, they operated covertly to travel the Navajo Nation illegally. It’s very disappointing that they did that, that they smuggled uranium across our Nation which is very inappropriate.'
"Navajo Nation Council Speaker Crystalyne Curley expressed the concern of the Council upon hearing the news.
'The Navajo Nation Council strongly condemn today’s action by #EnergyFuelsResources,' the Speaker said. 'Our Navajo people have suffered for many years, and many lost their lives due to #UraniumMining on our homelands. The Navajo Nation will continue to oppose and fight against the transportation of uranium ore through our lands for the health and safety of our people.'"Read more:
