This is the story of greed and power and stupid people making stupid decisions.
This is the story of one summer in an island community called Amity, somewhere near Martha’s Vineyard. It is a community that depends on tourists in the summer for the local economy. Many fear that Amity will not survive if they have an off summer and this looks like it will be off because of a Great White that has decided to make Amity it’s hunting grounds.
The first victim is a young woman who sneaks away for a moonlit swim. Everyone knows you shouldn’t swim alone. At least that was my first thought.
After they find her remains on the beach, the police chief Martin Brody attempts to close the beaches, but he must deal with the mayor who has his own nefarious reasons for keeping them open. The mayor has gotten tangled up with the mob. He owes them money.
It also deals with Martin’s wife’s infidelity and her struggle because she has left a privileged life to marry Martin. A young scientist she knew in the past who is also wealthy brings temptation and fear and anger for Martin who suspects his wife is cheating.
Quint a man who hires out his boat to take wealthy men out to fish for trophy fish has been watching the situation. He waits until they ask for his help because he won’t help unless they pay him a substantial amount of money.
Steven Spielberg made the movie Jaws. Usually, I would say that the book is better than the movie. Not this time. I saw the movie when it came out first. I shouldn’t admit it, but we went to see the movie because the theater had air conditioning. We hadn’t been married too long when the movie came out. We owned a little bungalow on an acreage outside of the city limits. It was cute but it only had a small window air conditioner that managed to cool only the bedroom and living room. The movie sounded interesting, so we spent the afternoon cooling off.
I enjoyed the movie. I feel like the characters were better developed. There were deeper backstories especially with Quint. It also felt more suspenseful. I guess it helped that you could see the fear and danger and hear that haunting music from the movie. If you’ve seen the movie, you know it. They play it every time the shark is about to attack.
A few years later the book came out in paperback. It sold better in the paperback version than it did in hardcover. I think that was so because the movie had already come out and people knew what to expect. I enjoyed the book it at the time, but what did I know? I was a twenty something who loved to read.
With this re-read, I noticed things I didn’t when I read it the first time. I have evolved since the 1970’s. Women were treated differently back then. Women were more trad wives back then except for the ones who’d burned their bras in the 1960’s. They were working to make changes that weren’t reflected in the movie. There were references to women in their bikinis and what they were expected to do. I do think they were callous about the sex and there were some racist terms used that probably wouldn’t fly now.
Apparently, I loved it the first time I read it. I had given it five stars on Goodreads. I downgraded it this time to three stars. I do still like the movie. I like the actors and the changes they made in the story. I think it was better than the book. I like it because it brings back fond memories from that summer. Fond memories of escaping the summer heat for a cool movie theater.
I chose to read this book because of the Book Cougars; a couple of BookTubers I listen to while driving and sometimes watch on YouTube. If you haven’t heard of them and love books, you need to check them out. They are reading books that have been adapted to movies this year. Though they are a little younger than me, they too didn’t care for the book at all. For me it was more a trip down memory lane. The memory of escaping the heat for a cool movie theater and discovering a director who would bring me many more enjoyable films and characters I would love.

Though they are a little younger than me, they too didn’t care for the book at all. For me it was more a trip down memory lane. The memory of escaping the heat for a cool movie theater and discovering a director who would bring me many more enjoyable films and characters I would love.

I had another DNF this month. I chose not to finish The Feather Thief. It was a book club book and nonfiction. I read a bit of it and decided it wasn’t worth it. Just didn’t appeal to me.
