My second panel at TechEx, in the potentially dicey postprandial timeslot, had me quizzing Leo Le Hoang Dung, director of manufacturing digital systems and regional digital transformation at Procter & Gamble; Alice Hilson, senior director of digital innovation and enterprise technology at DuPont; and Brenton House, IBM’s principal advisor for automation and emerging technology. I was pleasantly surprised to see the number of people watching exceed the seats available.

I was ready to write about a launch of SpaceX’s Starship v3 Thursday, but a series of last-minute scrubs pushed that test flight to Friday and gave me enough time to write a little more of the story in advance.

SAN JOSE, Calif.–I’m back on the West Coast only three days after returning from Web Summit Vancouver, and my excuse for yet another transcon flight involves two different events: TechEx North America at the convention center here, where I’m moderating two panels Monday, and then Google I/O a little up the peninsula in Mountain View Tuesday and Wednesday. This is my second year at the first event but will be my 12th in-person I/O.

5/11/2026: The Best Wi-Fi Hotspot, Wirecutter

This update to this guide was originally going to review the Franklin A70 hotspot that AT&T introduced last year, but as I was about to file my edits I learned that AT&T was discontinuing that model. So I took out all of the copy assessing the A70 and restored the discussion of older models, which still left plenty of new text covering, among other things, how most high-end smartphone plans now include more data than you get with hotspot-only plans.

5/12/2026: In Android 17, ‘Gemini Intelligence’ Can Automate Tasks Across Apps, PCMag

Google dumped an enormous amount of news one week before I/O, to the point that I needed almost 1,200 words to cover it without even getting into Googlebook laptops, since PCMag’s Michael Kan wrote up that part of Google’s news. I trust that Google left something else to announce onstage at I/O Tuesday.

5/12/2026: Data done right: Earning consumer trust in an AI-first world. Web Summit

This was the second year in a row I had a Web Summit Vancouver panel featuring Pamela Snively, chief data and trust officer with Telus Communications. Knowing my fellow speaker’s conversational style made this panel easy; the topic was also a good one to explore.

5/12/2026: The Analog Renaissance, Why Human Connection and IRL Is the Most Radical Innovation, Frontier Collective

I showed up 5 minutes late to this offsite panel hosted by a local tech group because my floatplane joyride ended almost 30 minutes later than scheduled, a timing failure that in retrospect seems like something I was asking for. I then had a fun discussion with my fellow speakers–Raven White, TED’s director of audience development and community; Heather Odendaal, WNORTH CEO and founder; and Johnny Rodgers, a founding principal engineer at Slack–but I feel bad about inflicting “where is Rob?” uncertainty on the organizers and forcing emcee Theodora Jean to field my position for the first few minutes.

5/13/2026: What it actually takes to train frontier models, Web Summit

This was a late addition to my schedule, leaving no time for a prep call beforehand with Black Forest Labs co-founder Tim Dockhorn. That, in turn, meant I only discovered on stage that he can answer questions exceedingly briefly–which required me to improv a bunch of new questions. This sort of thing has happened on panels before; this time, I didn’t feel like I was flailing around onstage quite so much.

5/14/2026: Can Photonics Make the AI Data Center Boom More Palatable?, PCMag

Since my research for this started at NTT Research’s Upgrade conference in mid April, I was happy I finally got this written–including quotes from my interview of the photonics firm Taara’s CEO at Web Summit Vancouver that helped this post be about more than just the expenses-comped NTT event. I was not so happy to discover that I left two errors into the copy, one about the distances that Taara’s silicon-photonics chipset can send data through the air and another about this firm’s spot in the extended Google corporate universe.

This is the first time in a long time–maybe ever, actually–where I wrote a story from an interview as an edited transcript instead of writing a more-structured piece with selected quotes plugged in where I saw fit. I enjoyed the challenge of finding the most enlightening exchanges about the longtime Silicon Valley founder and investor’s new venture ProRata and the state of AI in general out of 6,000-plus words of AI-generated transcript from my phone’s Google Recorder app (which I then checked by playing back the original recording).

A Walk Down Buray Avenue

September 12, 2021

It was just past midday on Sunday when I decided to walk home, the hesitant sun peeking through thick, dark clouds like Peter Pan playing hide and seek. As I passed by the White House, where the Divine Master once lived, I couldn’t help but feel a quiet sadness. The place looked old and neglected, though here and there were traces of unfinished repairs, as if someone had tried to restore it but lost interest along the way. I wished they had preserved it properly, like Jose Rizal’s house in Calamba—somewhere people could visit, a place that carried echoes of his life. The walls, worn by time and weather, seemed to hold stories and secrets. If only they could speak. If only they could replay the voices and whispers of the past. What a gift it would be to listen through time.

The Divine Master… How could I not think of him with both sorrow and wonder? I never met him. By the time he passed, I was 12 years old, living far from here. But those who did—those who saw him, spoke with him, felt his presence—what a blessing that must have been. I don’t know why, but I’ve always been certain that the man they called the “mysterious superstar of the South” was no ordinary man.

I’ve read many books—on religion, philosophy, physics, even the so-called myths of Jesus. Scholars debate them endlessly. But in all my reading, I’ve never come across another man who could pass on his power of healing, his ability to perform miracles, to those who followed him. Pythagoras couldn’t. Moses and Elijah couldn’t. Apollonius of Tyana, the sainted Comte de St. Germain, even Cagliostro—none of them could do what he did. No one else could shift between ages, appearing as a child in the morning, a young man at noon, and an old man by dusk.

Many saints and sages throughout history have demonstrated bi-location, siddhic powers, and other supernatural feats. But only one, if he can even be called a man, could bring the dead back to life. Only one could summon a newborn from nowhere—a reincarnation materialized. If Jesus turned water into wine, Ruben Ecleo turned seawater into gasoline. He could calm storms with a word. He could stay underwater for hours.

I once heard a story about a little girl who was crying over a broken toy. Master Ruben smiled, approached her, and opened his hand—out of nowhere, a bird appeared. He handed it to the child, wiping away her tears with wonder. He made the blind see, the lame walk, the deaf hear again. With a mere pass of his hands over barren wombs, women conceived. He predicted lives, forewarned of events, and never—not once—was he wrong. He was an enigma, a mystery no scholar, no skeptic, no professional could unravel.

These thoughts drifted through my mind as I walked down Buray Avenue, lost in nostalgia. The afternoon was still and silent. I could see the road stretching all the way to the sea, empty, undisturbed. The houses stood quiet, their inhabitants either napping, watching TV, or hunched over their phones. It was a long history I was walking through, but my memories of it weren’t my own. They were secondhand—handed down through stories from those who had been there, those who had seen him with their own eyes. Their testimonies were like modern-day Canterbury Tales, fragments of something larger, something sacred.

But what makes it all the more incredible is that many of those witnesses are still alive. Some have passed on, but others remain. Years ago, I had the chance to speak with Tatay Cuper Edera, who had seen with his own eyes the three men from a yacht anchored at Cabilan Island. In ancient times, the disciples lamented the lack of books to record the deeds of the Galilean Master. Now, we have all the resources we could ever need—yet we lack the writer who can truly capture them.

I once had a dream of a book titled The Life and Times of the Divine Master. I don’t remember its contents. Maybe I read it in the dream, but upon waking, all I could recall was the title. Maybe it was an Akashic record, something only readable in the spirit world.

These thoughts weighed on me as I walked. A deep longing stirred in my heart—an ache for a past I never lived, for moments I never witnessed. I never saw the Divine Master. I never heard his voice, never observed the way he moved, the way he carried himself. And yet, for reasons I can’t explain, I feel the loss of him.

My knees ached as I walked further down Buray Avenue, a lingering pain from last year. To my right, a large black boulder sat like a relic of the past, nestled among houses both new and crumbling. Concrete homes, carefully tended, stood in contrast to older, worn-down dwellings. A shirtless man sat on a bench beneath a tree, soaking in the breeze. A ladder leaned against a street post, abandoned, perhaps, for a lineman’s lunch break. Stores lined the street, bustling in their quiet way.

And this—this was the same street the Divine Master once walked.

It’s easy to keep walking downhill, toward the sea. But doing so means turning your back on the shrine.

And then, as I passed the Admin Building, a sudden, quiet ache filled me. I missed the Grand Master. I missed everything. And that was all there was to it.

A staffer with Public Knowledge e-mailed me a few weeks ago to ask if I would be willing to sign a letter supporting the Internet Archive’s efforts to preserve the history of the Web and possibly provide a quote about how I’d used the Archive. Having repeatedly relied on the Archive’s Wayback Machine to link back to my own past published work, I said I would be happy to do that–having already donated $100 to that San Francisco non-profit in January.

I had the dumb luck to see this change firsthand on a flight from Denver to San Jose Tuesday, then needed the rest of that day to get some responses from T-Mobile and United. The airline’s switch to free Starlink connectivity will fix this problem, but we are months away from that rollout reaching a significant fraction of United’s mainline fleet.

4/17/2026: Like It or Not, Google Wants to Be Your AI Travel Buddy This Summer, PCMag

I wrote up this post off an embargoed copy of Google’s announcement that we had to correct the next day because I had missed two of the finer points of this bundle of news. In my halfhearted defense, it is more work than you might realize keeping track of Google’s ongoing efforts to infuse AI into its existing services.

Despite that title–picked by the organizers at PATACS, pronounced “Pat-Aces”–I spent more time talking about other topics. Among them: my switch from Evernote to Obsidian just in time for CES, the sad state of tech policy in Washington, and my takes on self-driving cars and what’s befallen the Washington Post. As I have in previous appearances before these folks, I showed up with a bag of trade-show swag and gave away all of it.

4/19/2026: Blue Origin Rocket Launches, Then Loses AST SpaceMobile BlueBird Satellite, PCMag

I watched the third launch of Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket on my phone as I was walking up to the security checkpoint at Dulles early Sunday morning, started writing up what I thought was a successful launch, then learned–via painfully slow inflight WiFi–that New Glenn’s second stage had failed to deliver AST’s mobile-broadband BlueBird satellite to the intended orbit. This is a real black eye for Blue that should outweigh its achievement in reflying a New Glenn booster and then landing it on a barge in the Atlantic.
