Textiles reciclados impulsan la transición sostenible de la industria
El poliéster reciclado gana espacio en la industria textil, mientras Lafayette desarrolla telas con PET reciclado y tecnologías orientadas a reducir el impacto ambiental.

La industria textil acelera el uso de materiales reciclados y tecnologías orientadas a reducir su impacto ambiental, en un mercado donde el poliéster mantiene su predominio.
El poliéster reciclado alcanzó aproximadamente 12% de la producción mundial de poliéster en 2024, de acuerdo con el más reciente Materials Market Report de Textile Exchange. Aunque la producción de fibra reciclada aumentó, su participación disminuyó ligeramente frente a 2023 debido al crecimiento de la producción de poliéster virgen.
En este escenario, Textiles Lafayette ha incorporado materiales reciclados y tecnologías de menor impacto ambiental a su portafolio, con soluciones destinadas a sectores como moda, deporte, uniformes y decoración.
El PET reciclado gana espacio en los textiles
El poliéster continúa como la fibra más producida en el mundo: representó 59% de la producción global de fibras en 2024, según Textile Exchange. Del poliéster reciclado, alrededor de 98% provino de botellas de plástico PET, lo que convierte a este residuo en una de las principales materias primas para producir fibra reciclada.
Lafayette comercializa textiles elaborados con hilos reciclados y certificados bajo estándares como el Global Recycled Standard (GRS). Entre su oferta aparecen referencias como Aqua Bio, Terra Bio, Misuri R, Hydrotech R, Ekos R y Montesimone R.
La empresa también ha desarrollado textiles para aplicaciones deportivas con contenido de poliéster reciclado, una estrategia que busca reducir la dependencia de materias primas vírgenes sin prescindir de características como elasticidad, comodidad, protección y resistencia.
Innovación para reducir el impacto ambiental
Uno de los desarrollos de Lafayette es Terra Bio, un textil deportivo cuya tecnología permite una biodegradación de hasta 91% en menos de tres años en vertederos, de acuerdo con información difundida por la compañía. La tela está diseñada para prendas deportivas y combina propiedades de desempeño con características orientadas a reducir su permanencia como residuo.
La compañía también comercializa Aqua Bio, una tela destinada al segmento deportivo. Su portafolio de textiles sostenibles incluye productos fabricados con hilos 100% reciclados y certificados bajo GRS.
La estrategia no se limita al producto terminado. El informe de sostenibilidad de Lafayette correspondiente al periodo 2021-2023 documenta avances en el uso de poliéster reciclado, certificaciones ambientales y desarrollo de productos biodegradables. El documento también señala que la información fue revisada por las distintas áreas de la compañía, aunque no fue sometida a verificación externa.
Agua y energía forman parte de la estrategia
La sostenibilidad también se extiende a las operaciones industriales de Lafayette en Colombia. Su informe reporta inversiones en infraestructura para el tratamiento y aprovechamiento del agua, así como la incorporación de energía solar en sus instalaciones.
El documento de sostenibilidad 2021-2023 señala que la empresa amplió a 10 mil metros cuadrados la superficie de su techo solar y reportó una generación equivalente a 4.36% de la energía eléctrica consumida por la compañía en 2023.
En materia de materiales, el mismo informe registra un incremento en la producción de bases textiles elaboradas con hilos reciclados y la continuidad de certificaciones relacionadas con reciclaje, seguridad química y textiles.
El reto sigue siendo reducir el uso de fibras vírgenes
El avance del poliéster reciclado ocurre en un contexto de crecimiento de la producción textil mundial. Textile Exchange calculó que en 2024 se produjeron aproximadamente 132 millones de toneladas de fibras, frente a 125 millones en 2023. La organización estima que, si continúa la tendencia actual, la producción podría llegar a 169 millones de toneladas en 2030.
El crecimiento también mantiene una fuerte dependencia de materiales de origen fósil. En 2024, 88% del poliéster producido tuvo origen fósil, de acuerdo con Textile Exchange. La organización también señaló que menos de 1% de las fibras producidas mundialmente procedió de textiles reciclados preconsumo o posconsumo.
Por ello, el reciclaje de botellas PET representa un avance, pero no resuelve por sí mismo el problema de los residuos textiles. Textile Exchange considera necesario ampliar tecnologías de reciclaje textil a textil y desarrollar nuevas alternativas para disminuir la dependencia de fibras vírgenes. –sn–
