“Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Monday that U.S. President Donald Trump is doing what the government suspected by targeting the automotive industry. 'What message does that send to workers in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Alabama who rely on Canadian demand?' said Carney.“

“Ford said "everything is on the table" if the dispute worsens, including cutting off electricity and critical minerals from Ontario. He also called for Canada to consider using oil and potash as leverage.
"I'll cut them off," Ford said of critical minerals. "You won't get a grain of sand out of Ontario."
Critical minerals are increasingly important to U.S. national security and manufacturing. The Pentagon has sought more secure supplies of minerals used in military aircraft, missiles, munitions and electronics as Washington tries to reduce reliance on China, which dominates the mining or processing of several strategically important minerals.
Ford specifically cited high-grade nickel shipped to the United States and uranium refined in Ontario.
"What would they do without the high-grade nickel that we ship down to the U.S.?" Ford said.”

Up here in #Canada, we're not a bunch of #assholes that won't keep our word. It's not like we'd do something as #stupid and #repugnant and self-destructive and immoral and unethical like demanding someone sign a deal with us, then immediately turn around and violate the terms of that deal, or #abrogate the deal entirely. What kind of #demented #goldfish-brained cognitively-impaired #drooling #moron would do that?
So if we've agreed to sell the US things, we're not going to just cut them off in violation of existing #treaties and #deals and #contracts. We're not like that.
But we don't want to be #boring, either. So we'll mix it up for anything destined for a Washington D.C. address. Every third package will contain a #surprise - angry wasp nest, unredacted box of #Trumpstein files, a loaded bear-trap, landmine, something along those lines.
If it turns out to be popular, we can expand the program to cover all the #MAGA states. It'll be fun!

To my non-Canadian friends, this is a really worthwhile interview to get a broad understanding of the current situation, with enough specific examples that the lies being told by the Trump regime become easily spotted.
Good for Canadians too, of course, as we arm ourselves with facts that MAGA tries to hide.

“we will never fucking trust you again.”
If Trump isn't a foreign agent being pressured into destroying the USA, then why is he doing everything a foreign agent destroying the USA would do?
The World will not end without the USA, it'll just move on, like it always does when Empires collapse.

American businesses I partner with are now facing the reality of a 100% increase in my operating costs due to tariffs.
I don't enjoy this, but when a trade partner's administration attempts economic coercion, it forces a response. The focus on these tariffs indicates it is already hurting their own economy.
I have zero reservations about increasing prices across the board. If this makes you unhappy, uneasy, or mad, your course of action is to voice it to your administration.

Daniel Dale: "Today, Vice Pres. JD Vance said #Canada and #China are the two worst countries on trade policy. Because Vance specifically complained about Canada's super-high dairy tariffs (which, again, only kick in above a quota), here's some interesting WTO data: 96.7% of US agricultural exports to Canada are duty-free compared to 4.5% of US agricultural exports to China."

Trump decided to start a new #TradeWar with Canada.
The news is, this is what happened:

I hate to say it, but this is a threat, even though it's coming from "just" the #US transportation secretary (& it's not even true – #Canada does have a military, but that's not the point. Duffy is saying that it doesn't compare to that of the #USA). And he is saying the (not so) quiet sentiment of the #trump admin aloud concerning its desire to have the upper hand over Canada.

Our (🇨🇦) population and economy are much smaller than the country that launched this trade war. Re retaliation: I'm sure it's occurred to most people that we've a 2 mth window where we have more leverage. If Trump's trade wars sink the US economy, I don't think the Reps stand a chance in the midterms.

The rest of the world needs to discommendate Trump and the US, Klingon-style.

The Trade Rep for Canada, Minister LeBlanc just said he's not going to be concerned about what an official says... “on a US Social network”.
Interesting choice of words. Is there a mind shift happening?
Now might be the time to strike and remind your local, provincial and federal politicians that there are *CANADIAN* social networks *today*.
There are spaces they can join, and even that they can create.
It's time to ramp up the Canadian #Fediverse and #OpenSocialWeb!

Former *Alberta* Premier Alison Redford just agreed on CBC news that oil and gas has to be on the negotiating table as part of Canada's strongest-foot.
Extraordinary. Will we see Smith go along?

Excellent read! @pluralistic has been pushing the idea below and it's good to see another champion for it:
"If Trump is now ripping up our trade agreements and attacking us, we should be looking at a full rollback of the CUSMA digital chapter. It’s time to reclaim the policy space we gave up, like the ability to decide when sensitive Canadian data must remain under Canadian jurisdiction or using public procurement to build domestic cloud and software capacity."

I'm an Ontarian. I've never been a fan of Doug Ford. Nevertheless, if he wants to play Captain Canada as part of a team of Captain Canadas from coast to coast to coast, then, as long as he walks the talk, I will support him on that even if I continue to not support him on much else.
