Traitor Danielle Smith, Premier of #Alberta, is auditioning for the role of Governor of the 51st state:
“Alberta will continue to advocate for a strong tariff free relationship between Canada and the U.S.,” she said. “I will be urging the federal government to restart negotiations as soon as possible.”

I admit I’m not a self-anointed master negotiator, but I think asking for terms that threaten a nation’s sovereignty and cultural self-determinism are the kind of thing that would galvanize the other nation’s citizens into supporting their leadership and make it harder to gain concessions.

“…his own country hasn’t been able to stop him. The courts haven’t. Congress hasn’t. Forty trillion dollars in debt hasn’t. So maybe the thing that finally does it is a 40-million-person country…turning the American economy into a lesson about what a friend costs once you’ve made him an enemy. Maybe it takes the North freezing him out for Americans to remember what he’s cost them. We’ll take that job.”

It's not just Trump, fellow Canucks. JD Vance, as seen on Threads:
"Vance: We have to remember, Canada is a state-- sorry, Freudian slip. Canada is a country that would get invaded by a foreign country if it weren't for America"
-
“Here’s what 76 percent means… It means the Canadian government has permission from the Canadian people to hurt you, and to keep hurting you past the point where reasonable people ask if we should stop. It means Carney can turn off the taps, add export levies to energy and potash and uranium,…and cancel every American contract in the country… It also means we won’t stop when you ask. We stop when the job is finished.”

@pluralistic has written about this. We have economic weapons. We need leaders with the courage and strategic sense to use them.

Does anyone know if the 50% tariffs that were threatened to start Aug 19 but given a 3 day stay of execution are actually on, or is this another TACO moment with them now only going into effect on Jan 1st?
with a little over 2 months to the midterms it makes sense to TACO and rhetoric until after the midterms rather than slapping another $10B in taxes on Americns ahead of the midterms.

“Look at what actually happened this week. Trump announced a deal. Carney read the fine print and said no. … And now, EU leaders, Latin America’s Leaders, know exactly what to do. Drop-kick him into outer space as Carney did. Publicly. Calmly. Factually. With receipts of why you kicked America’s dementia addled, rapist, 34-time felon, Mafia State leader in the face. It works. Every time.”

"The American president clearly did not know whom he was dealing with. He is following in the grand tradition of American leaders starting wars with people they don’t understand, then wondering what went wrong."

"Canadians are pissed at Americans. Not just Trump, not just MAGA, not just Republicans. Americans. Why are they allowing their country to treat us this way? (Along with all the other shit globally.) This is a reflection on their national character.
"...the U.S. reputation has been destroyed in many ways, but attacking Canada? Threatening annexation. Conducting economic warfare. This damage is generational."

Ahead of a parade of sanewashed articles repackaging Trump’s deranged ramblings as coherent policy, here’s what #DementiaDon actually said, in his own words:
-
Dear Americans, Tr*mp hasn't yet figured out how to tariff your travel to other countries. I know travel is a luxury many Americans can't afford, especially with Trump's inflationary policies. But if you can afford it, travel outside of the US will broaden your horizons. And, so far, it's tariff-free.
And, for goodness sake, VOTE and work to defeat the Republicans.

Everything narcissists touch dies, sooner or later.
"The bottom line is that Trump is going to lose his trade war with Canada as thoroughly as he has lost his shooting war with Iran. But because he won’t face reality, trade with our northern neighbor will probably be disrupted until the narcissistic bully in the White House no longer controls trade policy.”

“Fellow resisters,
There is no place I would rather be at this time than in the forward trench with my fellow Canadians.
From one end of this great nation to the other, I have seen the determination and pride to live up to the great legacy we have as fighters of fascism.
The Juno Beach gene is in each of us.
As Winston Churchill said to Adolf Hitler in the dark days of 1941:
“We ask no favours of the enemy. We seek from them no compunction. We will have no truce or parley with you, or the grisly gang who work your wicked will.
You do your worst, and we will do our best.”
That is the spirit we need to show now.
As Canadians, we will do our part and do our best.“ -

With much more respect than is due, Tr^mp is full of shit. And Tr^mp can fuck all the way off.
(Disclosure: I’m Canadian. I’m normally polite and nice, but did I mention that Tr^mp can fuck off?)

“U.S. President Donald #Trump is threatening Canada’s auto sector with even higher #tariffs after the collapse of #tradetalks, declaring that #Canada is among the “worst” countries in the world to deal with.” #CanadaSky #TradeWar

Donald Trump threatens 50% tar... -
“House Democrats have introduced the Repealing Outdated and Unilateral Tariff Authorities Act, which would strip Section 338 out of American law entirely. Call the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and demand that your representative and both senators cosponsor it, even if they’re Republicans.
Especially if they’re Republicans…. In 1987, President Reagan gave a radio address pointing out that tariff-based trade wars shrink markets and throw millions out of their jobs. Ontario’s Premiere Doug Ford turned it into an ad that so pissed off Trump that he slapped a new unilateral tariff on #Canada.
It’s clear that #Trump doesn’t care if we slide into another Republican Great Depression, and, as I’ve written before, such events are seen by the morbidly rich as wonderful opportunities because they can buy up everything that’s not nailed down for pennies on the dollar. Some of America’s biggest fortunes were made during economic crises.
So the job of preventing it falls to us.”
-
Canada wasn’t a country then. And it was the British who did it. But would our friends in Britain be wiling to share with Canada their plans for burning down the White House? We’re going through some things here.
(That was a joke. Sort of. Kind of.)
-
“California Governor Gavin Newsom, a likely Democratic presidential contender in 2028 who often trolls Mr. Trump on social media, was typically blunt.
“Our closest ally. Our critical trading partner. And Trump is hitting Canada with 50% tariffs,” he wrote. “What the actual fuck are we doing?””
-
“Canadians know that if Mr. Trump’s coercive tactics had proven to work on Ottawa, he would have come back asking for more “flesh” in no time.
In the end, deal or no deal, what matters is the long game. What matters is that Canada’s economic and security dependence on the U.S. continues to decrease….
Free trade in North America may be dead, but Canada is now freer to pursue its own economic path.“
-
Trump will lose his trade war with Canada, just like he’s lost his was with Iran.
Lumber? How’s that housing shortage? Fertilizer much, Donnie? How’s that rural vote looking for Republicans these days? Did someone say potash and rare earth minerals? You don’t say. Wait, you really do want to get to Alaska by truck? Huh.
Worthwhile read. Buckle up.
