  1. MY RESULTS CAME BACK TODAY.
    I WASN’T EXPECTING THIS. 💎

Not because I felt ill, but because I’ve been having some changes "down there" and, at 70, it seemed sensible to stop guessing and actually get it checked out.

    So I did.

Blood tests. Liver. Pancreas. Bowels and an abdominal scan with contrast. The usual things you start worrying about when you’re older, and something changes, even a little.

Apparently, there is nothing wrong with me. I found that slightly astonishing. For most of my life, I avoided going to the doctor for tests. Somewhere in my head was the rather ridiculous idea that if I went looking, I might just find something.

    So I didn’t look.

Now, at 70, I’ve finally done the grown-up thing and had everything checked out thoroughly. The doctor says I’m as healthy as a horse. What makes that especially strange is that I’ve never lived my life as a health project. I had a massive stroke in my mid 30s, brain surgery, epilepsy and disability. By my late 40s, I was around 100 kilos overweight.

Over the past few years, I’ve lost that weight. I fast every day, meditate and do a lot of breathwork. Not because I set out to become some model of healthy ageing, but because these things gradually became part of the way I live.

Whether any of that explains today’s results, I have absolutely no idea. And I’m not going to pretend that it does. Bodies are unpredictable things. Most of the people I’ve known are already dead, including people who probably looked after themselves far better than I ever did. So I’m not drawing any grand conclusion from this.

I simply walked out of the doctor’s surgery today with one very clear feeling.

    Gratitude.

Apparently, this old body is still doing its job perfectly well.

  6. Three things that I am grateful for today:

🌺 Our maintenance guy replaced the flickering lightbulbs in my overhead kitchen light. We don't see him much anymore because of some financial mismanagement on the part of the company that owns our building. Instead of covering one building he now covers a plethora. He's super mellow and competent and I appreciate him.

🌺 I got a new copy of the Tassajara Bread Book - I loaned my old copy out years ago, if not decades. When my daughter was young, I baked bread for our small family every week with recipes from this book. Good memories and very good bread.

🌺 Walking at twilight in the rain with Sadie. The air is very warm and heavy tonight but I know that autumn is on the way.

  7. 3577 - I'm thankful for the immense amount of patience I have acquired over the last two decades (even if it never feels like enough). #gratitude

  12. Three things that I am grateful for today:

🌺 The crunch and shush of fallen leaves under my feet.

🌺 A new (to me) kind of caterpillar scrunching across the walking trail.

🌺 All three people in my building who were taken by ambulance to the hospital in the past week are back home now.

  13. BOOST PLEASE!

Ah heck, I forgot about my Internet bill being due🥺 As a disabled trans guy who is often bedbound, I need my Internet to stay connected so that I can actually interact with the world and have a life, social interaction etc, but I live under the poverty line, and with the recent other health diagnoses, meds side effects and waiting for my next operation, it completely slipped my mind and now I'm very stuck. I need $65 to cover it so it doesn't get cut off. Could you help me reach that goal please friends? It's much appreciated. Thank you🥰

  18. I need to be thankful for something (because if I don’t I’m probably going to punch a wall and I’ll probably hit a stud, I’ve no confidence in only hitting drywall).

And so today, I will be thankful for my huge panoply of fedizens.

You are all weird. And normal. And tall and short. And at least 31 flavors of gender. And furry and smooth and queer or straight or sideways. Digital and analog alike. Clockwise, counterclockwise, and anticlockwise.

  22. Three things that I am grateful for today:

🌺 My windows were open this morning to a cooling breeze - it's so nice to have some fresh air after a summer of almost constant a/c.

🌺 Sitting on my patio after a walk through the neighborhood with #SunshineSadie and watching the clouds form and reform and merge and separate and grow and dissipate ... change ... change ... change ... wondering if there are beings so vast who can look on the critters of the Earth and say look, there's a pony and there's a smiling dog and there's a human dancing and there's a turtle and there's a phoenix ... everything is in flux and malleable.

🌺 Sadie's great joy in her new Highland cow stuffed squeaky toy. All of her toys have their own unique name and this is her new Moo Coo.

  30. THE CHILD IN THE MIDDLE 🔹

This morning, after my breathwork, I sat looking out the window.

It was only nine degrees, but I didn’t need the heating. Pete was steam-cleaning the floors, the house smelled of lavender, and about two metres from me, a huge green parrot with a bright red crest was having his breakfast in a tree fern.

The window framed him perfectly. He couldn’t see me through the glass. He stood on one foot, held his food with the other, and then, just as I was admiring him, he fell over.

He recovered his dignity. And I laughed. He’s still there as I’m writing this.

Making peace with the past doesn’t seem to stop memories from surfacing. It just changes the way they land.

Sometimes an old piece comes back without asking to be fixed, only to be seen from where we are now. And sometimes something you have blamed yourself for all your life suddenly becomes clear: it wasn’t you. You were a child. You weren’t responsible.

My parents were unhappily married. My mother became pregnant with me, and in those days, that meant they had to marry. I grew up with a deep sense that I was basically unwanted.

It has taken me a lifetime to see that whatever was happening between them belonged to them. It was never the responsibility of the child who arrived in the middle of it.

Something similar has been happening with my memories. I can look back at my childhood and see what happened without carrying the old guilt with it.

Children are not responsible for what happens to them.

That recognition has released something very old in me.

And then the forgiveness goes further.

I can look at my mother and father and see two very young people who hardly knew one another, trying to live with what they knew at the time.

I don’t have to pretend the family wasn’t a catastrophe. I don’t have to rewrite the past or make painful things beautiful.

I can simply see more clearly now.

I was mistaken about my parents.

That doesn’t mean the events were different. It means my perception of them is different.

And strangely, wonderfully, I find deep gratitude there.

The Course calls it a movement from insanity to sanity. For me, this morning, it feels much simpler than that.

The past is still the past.

    It just isn’t touching me.

Meanwhile, the parrot is having breakfast, Pete is cleaning the floors, the house smells of lavender, and life keeps presenting itself.

    One miracle after another.
