MY RESULTS CAME BACK TODAY.
I WASN’T EXPECTING THIS. 💎Not because I felt ill, but because I’ve been having some changes "down there" and, at 70, it seemed sensible to stop guessing and actually get it checked out.
So I did.
Blood tests. Liver. Pancreas. Bowels and an abdominal scan with contrast. The usual things you start worrying about when you’re older, and something changes, even a little.
Apparently, there is nothing wrong with me. I found that slightly astonishing. For most of my life, I avoided going to the doctor for tests. Somewhere in my head was the rather ridiculous idea that if I went looking, I might just find something.
So I didn’t look.
Now, at 70, I’ve finally done the grown-up thing and had everything checked out thoroughly. The doctor says I’m as healthy as a horse. What makes that especially strange is that I’ve never lived my life as a health project. I had a massive stroke in my mid 30s, brain surgery, epilepsy and disability. By my late 40s, I was around 100 kilos overweight.
Over the past few years, I’ve lost that weight. I fast every day, meditate and do a lot of breathwork. Not because I set out to become some model of healthy ageing, but because these things gradually became part of the way I live.
Whether any of that explains today’s results, I have absolutely no idea. And I’m not going to pretend that it does. Bodies are unpredictable things. Most of the people I’ve known are already dead, including people who probably looked after themselves far better than I ever did. So I’m not drawing any grand conclusion from this.
I simply walked out of the doctor’s surgery today with one very clear feeling.
Gratitude.
Apparently, this old body is still doing its job perfectly well.

Three things that I am grateful for today:
🌺 Our maintenance guy replaced the flickering lightbulbs in my overhead kitchen light. We don't see him much anymore because of some financial mismanagement on the part of the company that owns our building. Instead of covering one building he now covers a plethora. He's super mellow and competent and I appreciate him.
🌺 I got a new copy of the Tassajara Bread Book - I loaned my old copy out years ago, if not decades. When my daughter was young, I baked bread for our small family every week with recipes from this book. Good memories and very good bread.
🌺 Walking at twilight in the rain with Sadie. The air is very warm and heavy tonight but I know that autumn is on the way.
