Ramachandra Guha's "#Environmentalism: A Global History" is a banger. It's rare that someone can be so informative and write so well. I take "notes" and find myself recording half the book.

Particularly valuable is his model for the history of the global movement. He sketches two "waves" - people reacting to the environmental destruction of the #IndustrialRevolution, and broad public mobilization to address environmental issues.

Guha works to include non-western narratives, but even so, the U.K. and the U.S. dominate the story. That's validating -- it has been a challenge to build a framework for @Roots that isn't "Here's the trend in the West and look how it's mirrored in Asia, Africa, and South America." I'm glad that I have greater access to global activism stories.

306 million gallons of toxic waste, 30x larger than Exxon Valdez, and Massey Energy got fined $5,600 while communities dealt with contaminated water for over a decade.

The investigation got shut down when Bush took office. Extractive industries depend on you not connecting the dots between their profits and your poisoned water. "Sludge" from Appalshop documented the four years after the spill.
