Ancient trees have mesmerizing energies. What a shame, when mankind cannot truly see the forest, when looking at an elder tree.

I got this book for free 😃 It's an incredible, fully illustrated, children's book about an old growth tree in an ancient forest & the wildlife, flora & mycelium, which all support each other in the ecosystem.

A really wonderful, educational book that all ages would enjoy & appreciate. This was a fabulous #FreeBook score 💚 It doesn't fit inside my little free library so I'm gifting it to a nearby community center's children's library 😊

In the distance, the 100-year forest. In the foreground, what’s left when a strip of that forest is felled, yarded, hauled, and most of what’s left is heaped into 4-metre high piles. All of that happened less than 12 months ago. In the next season the forest’s renewal will become evident. In the meantime, there’s a scar. And my memories of stillness, deer, bear, and big Douglas Firs.

As someone who’s wandered through the thick trunks of Vancouver Island his whole life, the Olympic Peninsula forest has been a bit of fantasy. I’ve never walked there. But I’ve seen pictures.
Now, with fascism rampant in the USA, I fear for those trunks. “Better in a mill or lumberyard, filling my pockets,” some logger crony is thinking or saying, right now.
I also fear for my safety. So I won’t be crossing the Juan de Fuca Strait anytime soon. I may never see these thick trunks in the bark, so to speak.

Things are getting complicated. The new War in the Woods features a new complex of players in the “worth more on the logging truck” vs “worth more standing” argument. Climate change *should* be playing a larger role in that argument. But no one seems to give a sh*t about that…

A year ago there was a narrow but beautiful and well-grown strip of second-growth Douglas Fir. 100+ year old trees. When they’re gone, they’re gone.

It was previously on the corporate deforestation list prior to the hard grassroots fight to save this area of Port Renfrew, where old growth forests were rapidly dwindling due to colonial capitalist style of short-term greedy gains & putting nature last. Nature should be first.

Fellow #SaveOldGrowth forest defender, Sheena, made a short film. It includes the jingle dance circle with me & several other #environmental #landback #activists on the bridge between River & Landback resistance camps.

River & Landback camps were main strongholds at Fairy Creek blockade. River camp was the first resistance camp set up in 2020 & it ran for a year before final big raid. There are 2 very rough logging roads that lead up to untouched old growth forest tracts from these camps. River camp is also where people could go hike to see/visit with Grandmother & Grandfather cedars. After we were removed, industry started cutting more roads up into the untouched old growth tracts. Teal Jones logging company has since pulled out due to financial issues & everything is up in the air at this time. Temporary deferral was renewed this year for some tracts by this one particular area in the watershed. Still hoping for permanent protections as the elder trees are not included in this small deferral.
