  1. Western Australia, hard-rock mining is powered by diesel-run machinery, which creates a lot of localized and atmospheric pollution. In theory it could operate with battery power, but the mining industry is not yet decarbonized. The container ships that transport Australian lithium to China are powered by bunker fuel, a very polluting form of fossil energy, and processed in coal-powered refineries. That’s probably the most polluting, most carbon-intensive part of the lithium sector."

Thea Riofrancos, Strategic Co-Director at the Climate and Community Institute, an advocate for lithium-based batteries: newleftreview.org/issues/ii159 🧵

  2. "[T]he movements that had arisen in opposition to the fossil-fuel industry and for a fairer economic structure were largely co-opted into the Democrats’ grand bargain: an elite geopolitical and industrial strategy, hinging on competition with China."

  3. Walk into any big box store. You will find "eco-friendly" products on shelves made from virgin plastic. Electric SUVs parked in lots paved over wetlands. Fast fashion brands selling "conscious collections" while workers earn starvation wages complete with carbon offsets sold by oil companies drilling new wells.

This is green capitalism: the attempt to sell us the same destructive system with a fresh coat of paint.

  4. Biodiversity offsets failed to protect habitat in NSW.
Now federal Labor is about to make the same mistakes, critics warn

"Offsets were meant to be a last resort for mitigating environmental damage from development projects, but rapidly became the default. An auditor general report found the government had no strategy for ensuring the offset market delivered the required environmental outcomes."

"In plain terms, development was occurring that harmed nature, money was accumulating in the fund because there were not enough offsets to compensate for that harm and species were being pushed closer to extinction."

“Turning offsets into an easy payment option flips the whole logic of environmental protection on its head."

  5. 'Extraction is the material foundation of a zero-carbon world. “#GreenCapitalism” can therefore sound like an oxymoron. How can capitalism ever be green if even the technologies and infrastructures needed to harness #renewableEnergy require digging several hundred new large-scale #mines in the span of a decade?'

  6. The “green transition” in the Americas is being sold as climate action, but it’s mostly a rebranded version of the same old extractivism. #Corporations and governments push #GreenCapitalism that deepens #inequality, exploits land and #labor, and sidelines Indigenous voices—all under the banner of sustainability.

Yet across the region, communities are pushing back, building real alternatives rooted in justice, autonomy, and care.

  7. #Solarpunk: A Deep Dive into the Cultural Revolution #Reimagining Our Future

The Philosophy Behind the Movement: More Than Just #SolarPanels

Solarpunk represents not just an aesthetic or literary movement, but a comprehensive framework for reimagining human civilization. Its strength lies in combining practical technical solutions with radical social and cultural innovation, while remaining grounded in ecological reality and human needs. As we face cascading environmental and social crises, Solarpunk offers not just hope, but a practical pathway forward that is both revolutionary and achievable.

    by NickyCammarata
    Nov 24, 2024

Excerpts: "While mainstream coverage often focuses on Solarpunk’s aesthetic elements, the movement represents a fundamental reimagining of human civilization’s relationship with technology, nature, and itself. At its core, Solarpunk challenges the dominant narratives of both techno-optimism and eco-pessimism, proposing instead a radical middle path that embraces both technological advancement and ecological wisdom.

    #Decolonial Roots and #Indigenous Influence

"Often overlooked in basic Solarpunk discussions is the movement’s deep connection to #IndigenousKnowledge systems and decolonial thinking. Many Solarpunk principles mirror traditional ecological practices:

    - The concept of “#SeventhGeneration” decision-making from #Haudenosaunee philosophy
    - #AustralianAboriginal practices of landscape management and fire ecology
    - #Andean concepts of “#BuenVivir” (good living) that emphasize harmony between human communities and natural systems
    - Traditional #Asian #agricultural practices that create #ClosedLoop systems

    The Political Economy of Solarpunk
    Beyond #GreenCapitalism

"Solarpunk explicitly rejects the notion that market forces alone can address environmental challenges. Instead, it proposes alternative economic models:

    - Commons-based peer production
    - Gift economies for local exchange
    - Circular economic systems that eliminate waste
    - Democratic ownership of key infrastructure
    - Time banking and alternative currencies
    - #Degrowth economics in overdeveloped regions
    #TechnologicalSovereignty

"Unlike techno-utopian visions that centralize control in #corporate hands, Solarpunk advocates for:

    - #OpenSource technology development
    - #CommunityOwned and maintained infrastructure
    - Appropriate technology scaled to local needs
    - #RightToRepair and modify equipment
    - Distributed manufacturing through #makerspaces
    - Knowledge sharing networks independent of #corporate control"

  9. The 162 corporations and trade associations which declare EU lobby budgets of over €1 million annually, collectively declare at least €343 million per year.

Five-year growth: Since 2020, these corporate interests have declared nearly €86 million more, marking a one-third increase over five years.

  12. subMedia and Peter Gelderloos: *It's Revolution or Death - Part 1 : Short Term Investments*

"Just in time for the #COP29 summit, where a group of self-congratulatory world leaders will meet in #Baku, #Azerbaijan for photo-ops, catered meals, and of course discussion of climate goals that they don’t intend to meet, #subMedia, in collaboration with #PeterGelderloos, is pleased to release part one of a three part series: It’s Revolution or Death.

The first installment of the series takes a look at the push for green #capitalism, and questions the common-sense assumptions of its cheerleaders. Bolstered by unwavering, uncritical support from #NGOs, energy corporations portray themselves as cutting edge innovators in green energy technology while hedging their bets and maintaining diversified portfolios – packed with fossil fuel investments.

The coming two installments will discuss #Indigenous and #anarchist struggles for land and autonomy and how local communities can get organized to build resiliency in the face of worsening climate catastrophe.

The effects of runaway climate change are already here. […] So what are we going to do about it? …"

  13. "The need for decarbonisation poses an existential threat to the #oilAndGas industry, which is why they have created multiple ‘escape hatches’ to continue fossil fuel burning, including techno-fixes like CCUS and carbon removals. […] Europe is showering public money and policy support on these dangerous distractions designed to keep Big Oil and Gas in business."

#GreenCapitalism is a suicidal fantasy. If human civilization is to endure, it will have to change both quickly and drastically. That is the fundamental moral imperative behind modern revolutionary activism.”

  15. From the Bruegel thinktank: "In the absence of good public data, special interests find it much easier to lobby for suboptimal approaches. The EU has a substantial problem in this respect, as energy data is not available currently in a timely way or at the level of granularity, reliability and consistency needed for informed policymaking."
