"I can remember way back in 1979, my then wife, Maura Sills, returned one evening from a training with Dr William Emerson, one of the pioneers in modern pre- and perinatal psychology. I was not involved in the work at the time. Maura was full of excitement about the workshop and, as we sat in front of the fireplace, she began to share her experiences of the day with William, which involved an exploration of her earliest experiences both in her mother’s womb and during her own birth. […] This event set me off on one of the most important explorations of my life, a reclaiming of my own empowerment ‘to be’ as I began to access my earliest prenatal and birth processes. […]
This book is a journey through this early territory not to be missed by clinicians of all kinds. We are beautifully introduced to the basics of early experience, its clinical, personal and interpersonal importance, with an overview of basic skills within the context of holding babies, mothers, families and adult clients in the exploration of the roots of their attachment processes, psychological health, personality development and safety-in-relationship. It also includes wonderful introductions to the neurophysiology of stress and health and how the nervous system develops and unfolds from the earliest times with relationship at its core. We are also introduced to the importance of knowing and sensing levels of activation that may arise in babies and adult process, with an introduction to appropriate trauma skills relative to the process arising. This is such important territory. The clinician must have the appropriate skills to help both babies and adult clients co-regulate, moderate and resolve their arising process in present-time. Along with all of this, there are clear descriptions of the clinical holding needed when working with babies and mothers, and the areas that may arise for holding, resolution and healing. Again I was so appreciative to see all of this included. Please, please slowly read and take all of it in! It is such a formative and important therapeutic and life journey!"
