#Webinar - #Marsh and #Stream Explorers: A Treasure Hunt to Find Healthy Freshwater #Habitats in #Maine
Apr 22 2026
7:00 pm - 8:00 pm"Curious about what critters live in your local streams and freshwater marshes? Come learn about Maine Marsh and Stream Explorers, a collaborative #CommunityScience project between #MaineAudubon and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (#MEDEP). This program trains volunteers to survey for #macroinvertebrates, or large #AquaticInsects, in streams and freshwater #marshes statewide. With many macroinvertebrates sensitive to temperature, #pollutants, and other environmental stressors, their presence or absence serve as an important indicator of overall wetland health. This data then becomes an invaluable screening tool for #MaineDEP to prioritize where more-indepth water quality assessments should be conducted.
"In this webinar you’ll learn about what the Marsh and Stream Explorers project has accomplished and its impact on water quality monitoring statewide. We’ll look at our overall results, share our successes, and talk about future goals of the project. How to Create a #PollinatorGarden with Children: Fun Family Activities to Attract Pollinators and Foster a #LoveForNature
by Chloe Wilson, February 12, 2025·Excerpt: "Another fantastic idea is to create a 'pollinator parade.' Have your children dress up as their favorite pollinators, and then march around the garden! They can flap their arms like butterflies or buzz like bees. This playful activity not only entertains but also helps them remember the importance of these creatures.
"You can incorporate storytelling activities by making up tales about the flowers and the pollinators that visit them. Kids can act out these stories, which fosters their imagination and creativity. This can be a wonderful bonding experience for the whole family.
"Don’t forget about seasonal activities. In spring, you can plant seeds together. In summer, observe which flowers attract the most bees. In fall, collect seeds from your flowers to plant next year. This creates a year-round learning experience that keeps kids engaged in nature."

Create a Fun #NatureExplorer Kit in 3 Easy Steps - Our Days Outside
Audrey
Last Updated on March 28, 2025"Don’t you love activities that entertain the kiddos right in your own yard and neighborhood? One way to do this is create your own nature explorer kit! It’s a great way to create some open ended play options.
These kits are also great to take on hikes if your kids need something to focus on besides just walking. 🤣 They’re also super easy to make, and you probably already have most of the materials you need around the house!
I highly suggest involving your kids in the creation of their nature explorer kit as it makes them more excited to use it. It’s also great to hear their ideas for what they want to use it for! I know my little guy had a blast customizing his kit and now he feels more attached to it than if I would have just done it myself.
I did end up buying a few items to really round it out on top of everything that I gathered. Because every little explorer needs a magnifying glass, and believe it or not, we actually didn’t own one!
Here’s how to get started on your very own nature explorer kit!
Step 1) Choose your vessel.
I’ve seen these made a couple of different ways. The first option is to use a backpack or canvas tote. This is ideal if you plan on using it while hiking or on the go. It’s important that it’s comfortable enough to take with you!
The second option is to make your nature explorer kit out of shoeboxes, briefcases, old lunch boxes, etc. Any sort of case would work. This option would be more suitable for plopping down in one place and exploring a smaller area like a backyard. Check out this beautiful example of an explorer kit made from a case!
Step 2) Fill up your kit!
Collection of items spread out on the ground to make a nature explorer kit, including backpacks, field guides, mini microscope, etc.
Now this is the fun part! There are so many great options when it comes to stocking your nature explorer kit. Here are some of the ideas we had:
- Field guides
> Trees
> Birds
> Wildflowers
> Insects
- Nature journal
- Nature printables
- Magnifying glass
- Binoculars
- Scissors
- Multi-tool pocket knife
- Compass
- Jars for collecting interesting items
- Bug catching kit
- Tray with compartments
- Portable microscope
- diy nature weaving board
- diy cardboard flower pressIf you have any other items outside of this list for your own nature explorer kit, feel free to add them! These are just some ideas to get you started.
Step 3) Head outside.
Once you have all your items gathered up, head on out, and explore with your kids! Use your binoculars to try and spot some birds or other #wildlife. Look at bugs through your magnifying glass!
Identify the plants right in your own yard with your field guides and learn what they might be useful for. (Or you might learn that you have some poisonous plants growing that need to be removed. Ask me how I know 🤣).
You might be surprised at how many interesting things there are to see right in your own backyard if you just go out and look for them! We’ve seen swallowtail caterpillars, whole bird’s eggs and nests, bats, fireflies, birds, garter snakes, and more just within our small city backyard.
Another thing we love to do is to meander around and keep an eye out for interesting nature finds. Look for unique rocks, pine cones, interesting bark, plants, berries, or flowers. Stash anything of interest that you find in your jars or collection tray!
Just make sure to keep an eye on what exactly your kids are touching and getting into. Look out for poison ivy, mushrooms, snakes, and other issues you know of in your local area.
A few more ideas:
There are so many ways to utilize your nature explorer kit! These are some things that we like to do.
- Use your field guides to identify plants as you walk. Teach your kids to respect plants!
- Draw pictures or write observations down in your nature journal. I like to ask sensory questions like what colors do you see or what sounds do you hear or what textures have you felt.
- Follow the prompts on some of my printable nature activity sheets (get below).
- Collect bugs and discuss their unique purpose in the circle of life.
- Use the magnifying glass to look around in the grass and see what you can find.
- Try to navigate to and from different areas using a compass.
- Sort and categorize your nature finds once you’re finished collecting. Talk about each item with your kids!
- Dissect items with the pocket knife (using appropriate adult supervision). [Um...]Conclusion
Let’s not let familiarity with our surroundings create boredom in us or our kids. I know for me, it’s far too easy to overlook the really amazing and interesting things that happen all around us every day. This nature explorer kit was a hit for my little guy and I hope you enjoy it too!
Now head outside discover things you and your kids have never noticed before!"

#LewistonID library to lend outdoor activity kits thanks to new grant
By James Dawson
Published November 11, 2024"Library users in the Lewiston area will soon have the chance to try gold panning, #birdwatching and other outdoor activities free of charge.
The #LewistonCityLibrary recently won a grant from the National Forest Community Recreation Fund to put together outdoor activity kits its users can check out starting next month. The Idaho Capital Sun first reported this story.
'We’re excited to partner with the Lewiston City Library to support new ways for people of all ages and backgrounds to connect with public lands, learn about conservation, and inspire them to take an active role in #stewardship,' said Angela Edwards, a partnership coordinator with the #NezPerceClearwater #NationalForests.
Kits include equipment needed for gold panning, birdwatching, #hiking and #camping. A #DutchOven will also be available for those wanting to experience cooking outdoors.
Those are on top of the fishing poles the library has loaned out for years, according to library director Lynn Johnson.
'It seemed like a good way for us to offer things for the public that are a little out of the ordinary,' Johnson said in a press release.
'Libraries are about opportunity. Whether you have limited means or lots of access and wealth, we want to help people of all means try something out,' she said.
These new outdoor activity kits will be available to check out by those with a Valnet library card, which includes a group of 48 school and public libraries in north central Idaho stretching from Elk City to Potlatch."

How to Start a #SchoolGarden: Your Complete Guide
Excerpt: "Benefits of school gardens
1. School gardens help children learn.
Gardening is the study of life. The simple act of caring for living soil and plants gives children a foundation for understanding the principles of birth, growth, maturity, death, competition, cooperation and many other lessons that transfer to human lives. In a school garden, children experience these lessons ‘hands on’ through a learning method that is rich and inclusive to varied learning abilities. The results teachers see every day are now supported by science: school gardens can help our children learn better, both academically and emotionally. For more information, read School Gardens: Can They Make Our Children Smarter?
2. Gardening together strengthens ties between school and community.
School gardening programs offer opportunities for community members to get involved, reducing the social isolation of seniors with skills to share and connecting children to older generations. They also help connect schools to local businesses and groups when they request sponsorship or volunteer assistance.
3. Getting their hands dirty helps connect children with nature.
Children who garden get a close-up look at natural processes and the living organisms that thrive in these environments. By learning to care for a living, breathing #ecosystem, children develop an understanding of nature’s importance in their lives and the lives of other beings. This fosters a culture of #EnvironmentalStewardship.
4. Gardening strengthens children’s immune systems.
There’s more and more evidence that getting #dirty exposes us to a variety of #microbes that can fortify our health and balance our immune systems against our overly sterilized world. This is particularly true for children who benefit from reduced allergies and asthma when exposed early in life to #dirt and the outdoors. The #VitaminD they absorb when gardening doesn’t hurt, either!
5. Working in a school garden helps children stay active, reducing obesity.
Teachers across the country agree: when children garden, they move their bodies more than when passively listening in a classroom. Jumping, bending, lifting, and stretching all take place during a typical gardening session. This is one of the objectives of gardening in school that most can agree is necessary given our increasingly sedentary way of life.
6. Gardening moderates moods and eases anxiety.
There’s some evidence that exposure to the beneficial microbes in soil can help regulate the neurotransmitters affecting our brain’s emotional state. A whole practice involving exposing yourself to green spaces to lift the mood has even emerged globally, with convincing results. But gardens are more than just another green space: they’re hands-on, outdoor classrooms that teach children self-regulation and mindfulness—both of which have been shown to decrease anxiety and depression.
7. Children who garden at school develop empathy and practice risk.
Teachers who garden with their students notice increased empathy towards other students and the organisms living in their school patch. That’s because tending to a ‘bug hotel’ or watching birds and earthworms thrive in the garden helps children understand the interdependency of nature. A garden also provides the perfect place for children to learn about boundaries and responsibility by practicing new activities in a safe space. Using a paring knife, trying out a hammer, or balancing on the edge of a raised bed are all ways for children to test their edges and learn new skills in a supportive environment.
8. Teaching and food gardens improve children’s diets.
Academics and journalists agree: children who garden eat more fresh vegetables. This extends beyond what they nibble on during classroom gardening time. Apparently just having a garden at school increases their intake of vegetables at home. And that’s good news for parents, teachers, and kids."

Protecting #Vietnam’s vast caves may have sparked a #wildlife comeback
by Joshua Zukas, 13 Nov 2025Excerpt: "After 15 years of stringent #conservation efforts, both Thín and Limbert say that wildlife populations are rebounding. 'When we were surveying Sơn Đoòng, we rarely saw any primates,” Limbert says. 'Now, we see big groups of Hatinh langurs [Trachypithecus hatinhensis] on nearly every trip.'
"These charcoal-black monkeys with salt-and-pepper beards and messy mohawks were once hunted for their meat and purported medicinal properties. They’re endemic to Vietnam and Laos and are listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List. More elusive animals in the park include the saola (Pseudoryx nghetinhensis), an antelope-like bovine with straight sharp horns and a black-and-white patterned head. So rarely seen that it borders on legend, the saola is often referred to as the 'Asian unicorn.'
"National parks in Vietnam lack the resources to measure wildlife population numbers, but increased sightings of endemic species indicates a comeback, and Oxalis has begun incorporating this into some of its tours. In 2022, it launched the #HangBa Deep Jungle Expedition, which visits six caves over four days in one of the most remote corners in the national park. Instead of looking for wildlife, Limbert says, visitors study animal tracks and look at photos taken by camera traps. 'It’s more of an expedition than a tour, with a maximum of six tourists. We insist everyone is quiet, we ask them to wear darker clothing and we keep away from the animals.'
"Though not opposed to Oxalis positioning wildlife as part of the appeal of their tours, Đoàn maintains the measured critical thinking of an academic. 'It’s hard to know if it’s a good idea to include wildlife elements [in the tours] because we don’t know the full story … are these animals returning, or is it that the animals were always there and we weren’t aware?'
"Đoàn also points to #Laos, which he says has failed to make the same strides in combating poaching as Vietnam. Without good data, he says, how can we know that animals aren’t arriving in Vietnam after being driven away by hunters in Laos?
"Limbert echoes Đoàn’s concerns for what’s happening on the Laotian side of the border, but remains optimistic for the future. In 2025, UNESCO expanded its recognition area again to include both #PhongNhaKẻBàng National Park and #HinNamNo National Park in Laos, forming a #transboundary natural #WorldHeritageSite. Plans are already underway to increase conservation efforts in this remote part of Laos, and Limbert is mustering a team to help diffuse knowledge and experience across the border.
" 'I’m sure we will see the same kind of change as Vietnam,' Limbert says. 'It’s happened in Phong Nha, and I’m sure it will happen in Laos too.' "

#WellsME - Native #NewEngland #Shrubs
Saturday, October 4, 2025,
10:30am – 1:00pm"Join Boot Boutwell to explore the world of native New England shrubs in autumn!
"Shrubs are a key part of New England landscapes. This program will take a close look at about ten common native New England shrubs, such as high bush blueberry, silky dogwood, sheep laurel, meadowsweet and steeplebush as well as a few non-native invasive shrubs. The program will focus on plant identification as well as fun and interesting #NaturalHistory. We’ll see a plant which colonial Americans used to make candles, a plant whose fruit sea captains used to bring on long voyages to help prevent scurvy, and a plant which the Chippewa used to restore balance in their lives. And as winter is coming and the leaves are going, we’ll also consider some winter identification characteristics. Children ages 10 and up are welcome to register if accompanied by an adult."
Please note: Program fee does not include site admission fee.

What Digital Does to Our Brains
April 30, 2015 by kris de deckervia #NoTechMagazine
"It turns out that digital devices and software are finely tuned to train us to pay attention to them, no matter what else we should be doing. The mechanism, borne out by recent neuroscience studies, is something like this:
- New information creates a rush of dopamine to the brain, a neurotransmitter that makes you feel good.
- The promise of new information compels your brain to seek out that dopamine rush."With fMRIs, you can see the brain’s pleasure centres light up with activity when new emails arrive.
"So, every new email you get gives you a little flood of dopamine. Every little flood of dopamine reinforces your brain’s memory that checking email gives a flood of dopamine. And our brains are programmed to seek out things that will give us little floods of dopamine. Further, these patterns of behaviour start creating neural pathways, so that they become unconscious habits: Work on something important, brain itch, check email, dopamine, refresh, dopamine, check Twitter, dopamine, back to work. Over and over, and each time the habit becomes more ingrained in the actual structures of our brains.”
