Meet Spea labreae, a New Species of Ice Age Toad Discovered at La Brea Tar Pits.
The first new extinct toad species and the first description of the Mexican burrowing toad at the Tar Pits help us understand the impacts of climate change on species distributions, past, present, and future.

💁🏻♀️ TIL: 🐸🦴 Spea labreae is a newly named spadefoot toad from La Brea Tar Pits, the first extinct Ice Age amphibian found there.
Paleoecologist Alberto Cruz spotted its unusual #bones while reviewing a collection untouched for nearly 30 years. The team also found a toad whose closest living relatives now live 2,400 km (1,500 mi) away, a clue to how #LosAngeles’s #climate changed at the end of the last #iceage.

Oh, I found A TOAD 🐸 in my dog's drinking bowl this morning!
Very big, very beautiful. Very annoyed at being asked to leave.
The #toads out in force is how I knew it might finally rain today*
(Which it is. 15km away. All bloody missing us again!)
I'm watching the tstorms cruise past us on radar, temptingly close. But no.
Tomorrow looks like a better (wetter?) chance..
*Originally typo'd as toady. Which is not wrong.

Hop-Line: 24/7 Helpline for Frogs and Toads 🐸 [Sponsored Post]
Wart’s up, froggos and toads? In this stressful 24/7 frog race world of work, hopping, ribbits, and vacant staring into the middle distance, it’s always nice to know a kindly listening frog is only a phone call away.
Whether you have Kermit-ment issues to your amphibian spouse, you’ve lost your lily pad, or you don’t see the point in hopping no more, call the Hop-Line today to resolve all your ills.
Is Your Pond a Toxic Swamp? Call Now On: 1-900-RIBB-IT
Our Hop-Line is staffed 24/7 by a team of 33,000 eager good Samaritan volunteer frogs and toads with nothing better to do with their team than help others.
We know your pain points, for frogs have many issues in life. So hop to it, give us a call, and discuss issues such as:
- Why you always feel so slimy and gross
- Why the neighbourhood cat keeps prodding you with its paws
- The nature and being of herons
- Raising an army of 300 frog spawn and the problems they bring
- You can’t hop, won’t hop, yet want to hop
So, whether you’re a tadpole facing employment issues or a bullfrog dealing with a mass of noise complaints, you can call us NOW to deal with:
- Metamorphosis anxiety: Woken up and your tail is gone? We’re got a cream for that!
- Dietary fatigue: Bored of eating nothing but the same species? You need to switch to a new diet, carefully honed to your needs by our expert frog chefs!
- Relationship red flags: Is that other frog into you, or is he simply inflating his vocal sac to assert dominance in his bid for pond retention status? We have the answers! Ribbit!
Call us now on: 1-900-RIBB-IT. It’s COMPLETELY FREE (as opposed to partially free)!
And, of course, we know you don’t own, know how to operate, and have no concept of what a phone call is. You’re a frog/toad after all! Instead, simply rear your head to the sky and ribbit that number: 1-900-RIBB-IT.
Once we hear you, we’ll eventually send one of our experts to you destination within 12 months to 35 years later.

Toad pool
Every summer, we get quite a few toads in our garden beds.
In the middle of summer, if you go on a night walk in my neighborhood, you can find a bunch of toads hopping about the sidewalks and in the grass.
You actually have to watch where you step sometimes because you could accidentally step on a toad! 🐸
A toad we found hopping in the grass near our garden.Toads help the garden
I always love it when I find toads in the garden because they help keep some of the pests away.
So far, I’ve counted five toads living in our garden—three in the front garden and two in the back patio garden.
Sometimes I will find a toad hiding near one of my fairy houses with its body halfway snug in a little mound of dirt.
Can you find the toad hiding? 🐸😄Collecting rainwater
We keep a five-gallon bucket in the garden to collect rainwater. I like to water the garden with the stored rainwater, especially on really hot days.
It’s not much, but at least it’s a little something for the plants when it’s time to water them again.
Here is Mr. Toad! 🐸 Camouflaged next to the pink fairy house and blue VW hippie van. ✌🏾❤️🌼Mr. Toad swimming in the rain bucket 🐸💦
Mj (24) found one of the toads swimming in our rainwater bucket.
It was such a funny surprise. At first, we thought the toad was in distress, but he was perfectly fine. 🐸😆
Although I do think maybe it was hard for the toad to hop out since the bucket was a little deep for him.
But then again, I don’t know if toads can jump that high. 🤷🏽♀️
I gently scooped the toad out of the rain bucket and safely placed him back in the garden.
We’ve named the toad Snake because his patterns remind us of a snake. 🐸😂🐍Making a toad pool
So, Zaya (5) had an idea to make the toads a toad pool in the garden.
We repurposed a small, clear storage box, and Zaya collected rocks, sticks, and leaves to put in the box. Then, she filled it up with a little water.
We haven’t seen any toads chilling in the toad pool yet 😂, but I did see a couple of Sparrows take some sips of water from the box. 🐦
I like to imagine maybe at night when we’re sleeping, a toad hops in the pool for a quick dip. 🐸😄
Next week, we’re supposed to have excessive heat in the high 90s. 🥵 Perhaps Zaya’s little toad pool can be helpful for our garden toads…and the birds.
💜 XO

Am having an argument with a female blackbird... it plunders my strawberries sneaking
i under
the net! Which being old has some gaps.Feels like it waits for me to show up , gets in through a hole and pecks away, as I approach it goes in and exits by another hole... grrr...
Maybe does it for fun as I left a few plants outside and she just won't have them...
Had one hour trimming session under rain and wind, going carefully around marsh lillies and marsh orchids, and not very close to the ground to avoid chopping frogs and toads.
Yesterday heard, clearly, a toad. In aa few days I'll trim it some more.

My partner and I have started to settle in to our new living situation, which means that I can start posting more regularly and putting more time into #math research again. Nature is being good to us. Check out this toad I found.

Australian Cane Toad - Art Print.
In June 1935, 102 cane toads (Rhinella marina, formerly ICZN Bufo marinus) were imported to Gordonvale from Hawaii.
The rest, as they say, is an ecological disaster!
