  7. A yellow Mallard Duck Chick, this is fairly rare, which is typically a hybrid or the result of crossbreeding between a wild Mallard and an escaped domestic White duck. May 2026.

  12. The dung beetle Onthophagus coenobita in Hedgemead Park in #Bath yesterday. Usually found on herbivore dung, but occasionally on carrion and decaying fungi. Might have flown in from the surrounding countryside. Males (like this one) have a prominent horn arising from the back of the head.

  17. Had a lovely trip out today to Dunstanburgh Castle. Northumberland coastline as stunning as ever, and it was a beautifully sunny day. Got to watch cliff-nesting kittiwakes and swallows diving through the sky, waves crashing on the rocks, and giant bumblebees.
Bought some cute socks with sheep on at the English Heritage gift shop 🐑

  18. On Holy Island yesterday (28th April) I noticed a few unusual looking insects with long legs. It looks like they were St Mark’s Flies, which emerge around 25th April every year. Amazing timekeeping! woodlandtrust.org.uk/trees-woo
This photo I took of two pied wagtails sitting on a wall even picks up one of those flies in the background (above the bird on the right).

Do not build on the #greenbelt motherfuckers!
Stop thinking about the sub par houses you'll build & the profit your going to make.
Start thinking of the homes your destroying to make them.

  20. Last year I thought I saw a newt larvae at the brownfield site near where I live but I wasn’t confident in my ID but tonight we finally saw some adults in the same location! They haven’t been recorded here before so of course I’ll submit my record.

  25. A pair of squirrels taken from exactly the same spot within seconds that look like they could have been taken in different places at different times. I swear the second is higher up the next tree to the left of the one in the greenery.

Both taken Wednesday 4th March - Memorial Park - Willenhall - West Midlands

  26. Might as well do some good news now as well :)

Large Tortoiseshell butterflies are not extinct in the British mainland again :)

I saw a couple of butterflies on the warm dry day last week but didn't ID quickly enough but they are out there for spotting already.
