A Great Blue Heron has been visiting the pond. It stares wistfully and hungrily downward. We keep a net over the water, but a couple of days ago something big jumped into the middle of the pond, taking the net and the rock that that held one side with it so I've had to remove the net for now.
The net kept the heron from getting the fish but presumably did not stop an attempted fishing expedition. Without the net the water is clearer and access is free to the dragonflies. The fish are fine so far but very wary.
Visiting Cat once chased the heron away. It comes several times a morning I'm not sure if I'll replace the net or not. Usually the herons and egrets that stop by come once or twice then give up. This bird is persistent. It does make me a bit more inclined to carry out the natural pond idea. There is an impending too many fish problem for the pond.

The ponds and surrounding areas are the only really green and flowery areas left on the allotment now, everywhere else is more brown than green and very dry. The ponds are teeming with life, newts, frogs and other pond life, dragonflies, hoverflies and other insects as well as many bees and wasps coming to collect water for their hives. Birds come to drink and bath, and hedgehogs and foxes come for a drink in the night. I keep the #ponds topped up with water as they are a lifeline for wildlife.

Erythemis simplicicollis, the eastern pondhawk dragonfly per inaturalist. This is either a female or an immature male.
It’s a very pretty dragonfly and it was not the one that was most common there. -

We had so much rain (99mm in May, and 85mm in June so far) that our pond is nearly overflowing (for which it’s designed, so no big issues there). The bridge in the middle is usually completely clear of the water around this time of the year.

I made a little barrel pond and was told by all the pond making guides that wildlife would show up almost immediately. It's been a week (okay, 3 days, shut up) since I put the pond plants in, and yet I have no frogs or other creatures!
In order to facilitate the process happening faster, I used my Squirrel Wand on the pond. (I did have a Frog Wand, but I seem to have misplaced it). I will report back on the results.
