"A Library of Things (LoT) is a community hub for sharing all kinds of stuff. LoTs follow the traditional mechanics of a library while pushing the boundaries of what can be borrowed: tools, instruments, camping gear, toys, kitchen gadgets, and more! They build community while providing a low-cost, #EnvironmentallyFriendly way to meet our material needs.

"There are roughly 2,000 formally established LoTs worldwide, as well as countless informal ones. Modern LoTs have been in operation since 1978, but informal resource sharing has always been an essential part of the human experience. Many of the largest LoTs in the US started to lend tools, but they can contain whatever items the community of members needs that can be shared safely and effectively.

"#Shareable has supported the development of several LoTs over the past decade. Projects have included an official advisory role to the former mayor of Seoul, South Korea, as they developed a pilot program with 32 lending libraries in apartment buildings, an inspiration and advisory role on the creation of #LaBOM, a three-story community center and #SharingHub in Montreuil, France, and the incubation of the #USToolLibraryAlliance.

"In 2022, we began a multi-year international research project into the current state of LoTs. Following the public release of our findings, we hosted a year-long Library of Things #CoLab and Fellowship and published a free, comprehensive Library of Things Toolkit."

They serve as places where intergenerational groups connect over yard games and art activities. #LibrariesOfThings provide access to a wide range of items from gear for adventures to essential wellbeing tools. This webinar will share how to plug into this rapidly growing and increasingly connected system of Libraries of Things, both inside and outside the traditional library world, and discover how they can help you meet your goals.

#HazelOnsrud is a public librarian at #CurtisMemorialLibrary, who works on community programming and collection development, including an extensive library of things focused on the Sustainable Development Goals. She serves on the international Library of Things Mutual Aid Group, the Advisory Board of the Sustainable Libraries Initiative and the Steering Team of MECollab. CUMBERLAND — "If your New Year’s resolution is to try a new hobby — cooking more diverse recipes, taking up knitting or digging into gardening — but you are not yet ready to make a commitment for all of 2026, there is a shelf at the library for you.

"Stacked with items including a #MortarAndPestle, a #SpinningWheel and a #broadfork, the #LibraryOfThings at Cumberland’s #PrinceMemorialLibrary has objects for all types of pursuits ready for patrons to borrow like they would a book.

" 'The tortilla press is quite popular. A lot of people, they want to have a taco party or something, they want to try it out,' said Kelly Greenlee, community outreach librarian at Prince Memorial Library, which serves #CumberlandME and #NorthYarmouthME.

"Categories of 'things' include arts and craft supplies, science and technology devices, health and wellness equipment and home and garden tools. When acquiring items for this collection, librarians look for items that are typically only used once or twice a year, or things that someone would want to test out before they purchase it for themselves. The collection is intended to save library patrons time and money, as well as broaden their horizons — much like books.

" 'It’s designed to encourage people to have a #SharingEconomy, essentially,' said Greenlee. 'Libraries have always been about sharing resources, and it’s really just an extension of that.' "

Oversize items can be fetched by staff and you may reserve Things for checkout just as you do a book. A listing of all kits is available in Minerva. So, I've been working on gathering up articles for tomorrow's #SolarPunkSunday, but I'll tell ya, in the process of searching for articles about #CommunityGardens and #LibrariesOfThings, I've been coming across some very not-so-hopeful stories about how many of these ESSENTIAL services are getting cut (and not just in the US). When SPS starts to wind down tomorrow, I will post some of those articles. It's not what everyone will want to hear, but I feel that those stories need to be told as well.

Here's how it works

"The Jacksonville Library of Things pilot, located at University of North Florida dormitories, is looking for donations of board games, kitchen items, phone chargers and tools to be used by students living in the dorms, based on a needs assessment conducted with students in partnership with the University.

"The Central Florida Tool Library (serving Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties) is seeking donations related to disaster preparation and response, as well as home repair and maintenance. These items were identified based on conversations between community members and our partner, #CentralFloridaMutualAid.

"Each wish list notes whether the item can be gently used or refurbished or must be new. (Certain products must be new for the libraries to ensure they meet safety and fire code standards. But purchasing these items once to be shared among the community prevents each future borrower from buying more.)

"Links to secondhand and refurbished sites are included where possible. The wish lists also provide a desired quantity of each item. Once the maximum number of items is claimed, you’ll see the request has been fulfilled. "A new Library of Things will 'reduce waste' and help people struggling for money, organisers say.

"It will operate from #BeestonLibrary in #Nottinghamshire and open in the coming weeks, although an exact date has not yet been set.

"The service will allow people to borrow #HouseholdItems, rather than books, such as carpet cleaners, sewing machines, and children's party sets.

"Fiona Hartley, an organiser, said: 'These are typically things that might be a bit more expensive, and then you only use them once or twice, and then they sit in your cupboard unused.'

"She said times were tough at the moment and "this is just something that helps people save a bit of money and a bit of space in their homes".

"The project has received funding from the Beeston Civic Society and Broxtowe Borough Council to help with the purchase of items - totalling £1,500.

"This money will be spent on purchasing supplies and items to stock the library.

"Ms Hartley said there was a 'growing movement' behind Libraries of Things nationwide. Similar projects have been set up across the wider #EastMidlands.

"Peter Cribb, the district manager at Inspire, which runs Beeston Library, said he was 'excited at the potential'.

"'It's not something we've done before, you know we do loan out non-book items, but they're on a one-off basis,' he said.

"When the service starts, people will use an app to book an item they wish to use. Library staff will then retrieve the item.

"The maintenance of the items and the app will be operated and paid for by the volunteer groups, Mr Cribb said, and the library's role is to act as storage.

"Karrie Stainer is the chairwoman of the volunteers and said she first had the idea for the Library of Things over one year ago.

"However, she struggled to secure funding for the project until recently.

"'The underlying motivation really comes from #environmental issues, not being wasteful of stuff, not throwing stuff away,' she said."
