Except: "If all 16,000 golf courses in America turned all of their land — about 2.3 million acres — into housing with the same density as #DesertPines, it would be enough space to build 22 million homes. If you applied that approach to only those courses that are, like Desert Pines was, municipally owned, then you could still build 4.3 million #affordablehomes which would make an enormous dent in the nation’s current shortage of about 7.2 million affordable homes.
"That’s not to say that every golf course in every land-constrained city ought to be bulldozed to make way for new apartment buildings [Nah. Rewild some of them, turn others into #CommunityGardens and #GreenSpaces]. Golfing, for the record, has made a bit of a comeback lately, much like its most famous star. And even if fairways were still closing at the rate they were a few years ago, there’s no way that they could solve Nevada’s housing gap alone, much less overcome the shortage nationwide. But they can still help close the gap.
"Ramos, who is among the local leaders organizing community meetings around the Desert Pines redevelopment, believes it could be transformative for the community over time. She says that in her neighborhood it’s become a luxury for many families just to live alone with their spouse and kids, rather than doubling up in cramped apartments, pooling together money each month to keep up with rising costs.
"When the Desert Pines redevelopment opens about a decade from now, it will include not just 1,500 housing units, but also a soccer pitch, #WalkingTrails, and a job training center. In East Las Vegas, the temperature often feels more than five degrees hotter than it does in the Badlands’ affluent suburbs, where residents enjoy over nine times as much parkland per person.
" 'This project brings a lot of hope,' said Ramos, who’s especially excited about the prospect of more #accessible, #KidFriendly #GreenSpaces. 'We’re all human. We need equity, respect, and to live with dignity, and that’s why we urgently need #trees too.'
"As it turns out, you can do a lot with an old fairway. Even with all of those bells and whistles, the new development will still likely use less water than the golf course did. And, because the plot of land is already enmeshed within the community of East Las Vegas — close to existing sewer, water, and electricity lines — it will be much cheaper to build there than it would be to try doing so on the outskirts of the city, said Antonio Bermúdez, vice president of McCormack Baron Salazar, the developer working with the city and state government on the proposal.
" 'What I’ve seen so far in the state of Nevada is that the political will is there,' he said, though the question is, 'how do we make this happen not just in Nevada and the city of Las Vegas, but everywhere else where affordable housing is needed.' "

This study aimed to comprehensively map and classify Islamabad’s UGS, identify spatial disparities, and evaluate their ecological, recreational, and social functions. The research also proposed sustainable strategies for managing UGS to address urban challenges, including climate adaptation, biodiversity loss, and social inequity. The study developed a detailed spatial map of Islamabad’s UGS using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and high-resolution satellite imagery. Seven typologies were categorized and analyzed, including parks, playgrounds, institutional green spaces, and waterways. Field surveys and random sampling validated the thematic maps, achieving an accuracy rate of 95.68% based on statistical metrics like Kappa coefficients. The study revealed significant disparities in UGS distribution.
"Wealthier zones had larger, well-maintained green spaces, while denser areas lacked accessible and functional UGS. Recreational spaces, institutional greenery, and waterways played a vital role in enhancing biodiversity, urban aesthetics, and community well-being, though many remain underutilized or degraded. #Toronto - The Children’s Garden at #EvergreenBrickworks is where kids can explore and connect with nature. It’s a place for kids to get hands on the natural world, including exploring the garden’s rich array of plants.

"Our #UrbanAgriculture beds within the garden offer space to grow familiar veggies and herbs. Garden spaces like these can play a vital role in bringing together community members to work to grow food collectively. They can also teach us some valuable lessons on the value of farms and protected local agricultural land, which are able to produce food on a much larger scale.
Located inside the Children’s Garden, the Guild Garden is designed with children in mind. Made possible by support from Forester’s Financial, the garden is built around a central cherry tree surrounded by many species of plants (including fruit shrubs, berries, vegetables and herbs) to create a rich and diverse garden for children to explore. The plants chosen for this garden support #BeneficialInsects, help deter pests and protect the soil.
Lining the alley leading up the garden, stockpots and metal container were installed in 2021 by Foresters Financial, to showcase a regenerative landscape, while also providing food for both pollinators and people. The art on the planters was designed by #Délı̨nę #FirstNations artist and printmaker #LauraGrier.
Milkcrate containers are a legacy left over from the #BoweryProject, which seeks to set up mobile urban farms by setting up #ContainerGardens in urban lots. Initially installed in 2015 with an urban agriculture focus, the milkcrates were revitalized in 2023 into a native container garden concept. This project aims to demonstrate to visitors that NativePlantGardens can be planted anywhere, even without a yard. "Our #UrbanAgriculture beds within the garden offer space to grow familiar veggies and herbs. Garden spaces like these can play a vital role in bringing together community members to work to grow food collectively. They can also teach us some valuable lessons on the value of farms and protected local agricultural land, which are able to produce food on a much larger scale.
Located inside the Children’s Garden, the Guild Garden is designed with children in mind. Made possible by support from Forester’s Financial, the garden is built around a central cherry tree surrounded by many species of plants (including fruit shrubs, berries, vegetables and herbs) to create a rich and diverse garden for children to explore. The plants chosen for this garden support #BeneficialInsects, help deter pests and protect the soil.
Lining the alley leading up the garden, stockpots and metal container were installed in 2021 by Foresters Financial, to showcase a regenerative landscape, while also providing food for both pollinators and people. The art on the planters was designed by #Délı̨nę #FirstNations artist and printmaker #LauraGrier.
Milkcrate containers are a legacy left over from the #BoweryProject, which seeks to set up mobile urban farms by setting up #ContainerGardens in urban lots. Initially installed in 2015 with an urban agriculture focus, the milkcrates were revitalized in 2023 into a native container garden concept. This project aims to demonstrate to visitors that NativePlantGardens can be planted anywhere, even without a yard. "The summer after my amputation, I secured a small plot in a community garden. A dear friend paid the $15 seasonal fee—her way of helping me get outside and moving with my fairly new prosthetic leg.
"Her youngest son was five at the time and eager to help. We called it our 'experimental' garden, since neither of us really knew what we were doing. What we didn’t expect was how much it would give back to us. It became a social experiment of sorts—and a powerful boost to both my mental and physical health.
"We kept that garden going for several years. He learned how to plant, pull weeds, and harvest right alongside me—and even developed a taste for fresh salad ingredients.
"As we celebrate Earth Day, it’s a reminder that access to #GreenSpaces should be something everyone can experience.
"So why should communities consider making their gardens fully accessible, regardless of physical ability?
"#Gardening is a simple, healthy way to create a safe and welcoming environment for people of all skill levels and abilities. For those using #wheelchairs or electric #scooters, traditional gardens can be limiting—bending down or standing for long periods isn’t always possible. But something as simple as raised beds at the right height can make participation possible again.

July 4, 2026"The Cheyenne Board of Public Utilities has stopped accepting industrial wastewater from data center fill-and-flush and closed-loop cooling operations after tracing a rare bacterium in the city's reclaimed water to #GoatSystemsLLC, the entity Meta uses to build its Cheyenne campus. In a notice reported by Cowboy State Daily, the Board said Goat Systems was in significant noncompliance for discharging water carrying #CupriavidusGilardii, a metal-resistant bacterium that interfered with two water reclamation plants and pushed the reuse system offline for months of cleanup. The Board revoked the contractor's fill-and-flush discharge privileges on March 24, and a wider suspension now covers every data center connected to city services.
"#FillAndFlush is a commissioning step in which crews fill a cooling loop's piping with water, flush it to clear debris before the system is run, and then send the used water to drain. Goat Systems routed that flush water, which contained Cupriavidus gilardii, into Cheyenne's sanitary sewer, Frank Strong, the Board's engineering and water resource division manager, told the Wyoming Tribune Eagle. Strong said the fill water had been purchased from the Board itself and that the origin of the bacterium remains unknown, but said that lab staff caught it in February during routine fecal-bacteria sampling. 'This isn't something we normally test for,' Strong told the paper.
"#Microsoft and #Nvidia market #SealedLiquidLoops as a near-#ZeroWater alternative to evaporative cooling, an approach that is spreading quickly as #AIDataCenters expand into more communities. Microsoft describes cooling systems that are filled once during construction and then recirculate the same water, while Nvidia's Rubin platform runs a coolant that is 75% water and 25% propylene glycol. That one-time fill, however, is the step that produces a discharge, and the flush water leaves the site before the loop is sealed.
"Strong went on to add that the Board's concern extends past the finding of the bacterium, because closed-loop systems can carry #glycol and other #chemicals that municipal treatment plants aren't built to process. #CheyenneWY sprays its reclaimed water on #parks, golf courses, and other #GreenSpaces, and the Board worried the bacterium could become an aerosol hazard during irrigation. Cupriavidus gilardii isn't a regulated contaminant, yet the discharge disrupted treatment sufficiently to trigger pass-through and interference findings under the Cheyenne City Code and federal pretreatment rules.
"Meta said that it's supporting its general contractor, #Fortis, which stopped discharging and began hauling wastewater offsite, and that independent testing found no trace of the substance. Testing at the #DryCreek and #CrowCreek facilities cleared in late June, and the reuse system is back online. Cheyenne City Councilman Pete Laybourn called the disclosure 'a very, very unpleasant surprise.' The Board hasn't said how the suspension affects other Cheyenne data centers still under construction."

"For decades, major portions of the 18,000-acre Chattahoochee Riverlands in Atlanta were largely inaccessible or closed due to hazardous conditions and water pollution from decades of sewage and sludge.
"Now, thanks to a new investment from the #TrustForPublicLand (#TPL), over 100 miles of trails, parks, and eight new campsites will be available to the public. Spanning as far north as #BufordDam and as far south as #ChattachoocheeBend State Park in Coweta County, the Chattahoochee Riverlands will provide unique river access and outdoor adventures for residents of the sprawling Atlanta metropolitan area over the course of the next decade.
"TPL’s goal is to expand and revitalize the area, connecting the #MetroAtlanta Region to the river and providing new outdoor access for one million people. At a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 1, 2025 civic leaders and TPL opened New Riverlands Park, one of two new points of entry to the area. The other, #CampbelltonPark, has an expanded, #ADAAccessible campsite, and TPL is working with the city to add an additional 70 acres, according to Saporta Report.
" 'Stretching across 19 cities and seven counties, this network of trails will bring people to the water’s edge, spark a lifelong love of the river, and reveal the magic of the #ChattahoocheeRiver to all,' said the team at TPL in a statement announcing the transfer of 14 acres of riverfront property in Sandy Springs to the National Park Service, effectively expanding the overall acreage of the Chattahoochee Riverlands.
"An updated interactive website can help visitors understand the variety of parks, hiking trails, and local dining options along the river, in addition to the many activity options for outdoor enthusiasts like running, cycling, camping, or even just a leisurely stroll through the riverside trails.
"The area was previously a dumping ground for wastewater and polluted stormwater, according to a report from Atlanta Magazine, making it unsuitable for recreational use. Now, thanks to upgrades from TPL and grassroots efforts from local advocacy group #ChattahoocheeNow, the water is cleaner and open to additional recreational uses. Still, TPL recommends visiting the #BacteriAlert website before swimming or wading in the water.
"This isn’t the only environmental upgrade project TPL is working on. In May, the organization announced an extension to the Empire State Trail, which currently spans from the southernmost point of #NewYorkCity's #BatteryPark, to the Canadian border in northern upstate #NewYork. Training GPT-3 was estimated to require 1.3 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity, while estimates suggest GPT-4 consumed between 50 and 70 GWh. However, the report reveals this framing is outdated. Once a model is deployed, inference—the continuous running of models to answer everyday user prompts—becomes the dominant cost, accounting for 80 to 90 per cent of total #AI energy use. ChatGPT alone is estimated to process around 2.5 billion prompts per day, translating to roughly 383 GWh of electricity per year for a single product. Offsetting associated carbon emissions would require 2.6 million tree seedlings grown for 10 years, enough trees to cover a land area the size of Manhattan. The water footprint is equivalent to the minimum annual domestic water needs of roughly 500,000 people in Sub-Saharan Africa, and the land footprint is equal to over 800 football fields."

As artificial intelligence becomes embedded in economies, public services, research, communication, and everyday life, it depends on a growing physical infrastructure of #datacenters, advanced #chips, #CoolingSystems, #ElectricityGrids, #WaterResources, land, and #CriticalMineral supply chains. The report shows that AI is not only a digital technology, but also a material system with measurable #EnvironmentalCosts.
"The report moves beyond a carbon-only lens by quantifying the carbon, water, and land footprints associated with the electricity used to train, deploy, and operate AI systems at scale. Its central finding is that AI’s environmental costs depend not only on how much electricity is used, but also on where that electricity is generated and which energy sources power it. Every kilowatt-hour used by AI carries carbon, water, and land implications, and these footprints do not always move in the same direction: low-carbon electricity is not automatically low-water or low-land. The report also shows that AI’s footprint is shaped by both major infrastructure trends, including the rapid growth of data centers, and everyday use patterns, including model choice, output length, modality, and the growing use of text, image, and video generation.
"Importantly, the report frames AI’s environmental footprint as a governance and justice challenge, not only a technical problem. In the village of #MountPleasantWI, Microsoft's nine data center buildings would command a collective footprint of over 5.2 million square feet built on a property nearly the size of New York City's Central Park, according to planning documents. And just outside #EagleMountainOT, #QTS — one of the nation's biggest data center operators — is building one that is expected to demand between 1.9 and 3 terawatt-hours a year once fully online, according to Business Insider's estimate. On average, that's the same amount of electricity used by 227,000 US homes.
"The race by tech companies to reach ever-greater AI ambitions has sparked a sweeping backlash from local residents and state and local officials wary of #Datacenter impacts on the #environment, economy, and #communities.
