  9. Went for the launch of the new book, "A Field Guide to Reptiles & Amphibians of Singapore" at the Library. Caught up with some nature people who I haven't seen for some time. Minister Desmond Lee was there to officially launch the book with the authors.

A fun time, and I hope to put the book to good use.

  13. Reposting this from a DM...

The #GoldenGuide was my first bird id book. It covered the whole US and had little phonograms by the range maps. I actually identified a new bird (#NorthernParula) using ONLY the phonogram when I first moved to #Florida. The birds are usually high in the trees, you can hear them but not see them. Years went by before I saw the actual bird! 🙂

  14. This is a long shot but does anyone have a Golden Guide “Reptiles & Amphibians” from the 50s?

I have a memory that in it, amphibians were said to be “less valued” (or something similar) compared to reptiles that could be used for science experiments and human food. There was a picture of a turtle soup can?

I don’t know if this is a real memory. I donated most of my guides when I left my naturalist position so was hoping someone might confirm. Kinda hoping I’m wrong.

  15. One of my favorite “I didn’t know I needed this in my life” field guides is Stone by Stone by Robert M. Thorson. I often come across old stone walls deep in the woods. These woods use to be farmland and the rocks were dug up and piled either haphazardly or with some considered design. The book goes into all sorts of interesting natural history of the glaciers and subsequent human activity.

  18. #MyTopShelf Here’s my most used book shelf. It’s my go-to place when I’m making species identifications on #iNaturalistNZ. So much good species ID and #NaturalHistory info still isn’t online, plus I still find it faster to go right to the relevant pages of a familiar book, than start an internet search. #nature #FieldGuides #AotearoaNZ
