#Oregon - Top tips for #gardeners to help fight #ClimateChange

This is primarily due to human activities releasing excessive greenhouse gases into the atmosphere over the last 150 years. As a result, we’re seeing temperatures increasing, periods of #drought expanding, and we are experiencing more #SevereWeatherEvents than ever before. These changes have serious effects on our entire lives, including our #gardens.
"Along with modifying what you plant in your garden as a reaction to these changing weather patterns, there are steps you can take to help slow the pace of climate change. Below are a few practical ideas to learn more, get involved and take action right in your own garden.
Learn more about climate change and get connected with your community"Get up to date with the how and why of climate change on the United Nations’ Climate Action website. Get connected with others in your community: Join a local climate organizing group or talk to your neighbors about starting one. Check with your city or county government about how it is addressing climate change and get involved with local initiatives.

"Need a garden tool for an occasional task? Here are a few ideas to avoid buying one-time use equipment:
"Check secondhand home improvement and thrift stores before buying new. Ask your local library to start a #LibraryOfThings and include garden tools. Or consider starting your own neighborhood tool-lending library. Also, look online and join your local sharing community (the #BuyNothing and #Freecycle networks are two examples).
Reduce the amount of single-use plastics that you use in the garden."If you purchase transplants, look for seedlings grown in biodegradable containers rather than plastic. If you start your own seeds, reuse plastic pots and seedling trays from last year rather than buying new or try making your own pots from newspaper. (Make sure to clean recycled plastic pots well to remove clinging soil and start with fresh containers if disease was present to avoid spreading.)
"Disposable plastic greenhouse sheeting (used for season extension or hoop house coverings) usually has a life span of three to five years. Switch out for a long-lasting material like #RecycledWindows or polycarbonate panels. Check with your local nursery to see if it recycles plastic pots. We help the environment – by preventing single-use tool purchases, stopping tools rusting in garages and by purchasing high quality tools that have a longer life thereby reducing unnecessary consumption. We also help the community, by giving our members equality of access to great tools, saving them money, and empowering people to build, share and create in a more sustainable way.
Do you want to become a member?
- A membership with the Tool Library is $15 for 3 months.
- There are no extra charges and you can borrow up to eight tools each week.
- You must to be a permanent resident of Raglan to become a member and provide proof of address and personal identification with your application.

"This is more or less how tool-lending libraries work. Curtin, who is a volunteer and steering committee member of the nonprofit Rhode Island #ToolLibrary #PVDThings, connects people with the tools and know-how to make daunting do-it-yourself projects more accessible.

To sign out equipment residents must provide a valid City of South Portland Library card and sign an Equipment User Agreement form.
The SPETL is open Wednesdays and Saturdays 10 AM to 3 PM.

We are now accepting applications for our Resilient Yards Program! Are you interested in learning more about native plants and resilient gardening in your yard? Participating in Resilient Yards is a great way for South Portland Residents to get started. Our volunteer coaches will help you design and install a small native habitat garden in your yard with program resources. Learn more and go to southportland.gov/resilientyards to apply by May 1, 2026."

We are interested in technology (both new and old) but are also a social group of people who enjoy talking and bouncing ideas/questions off of one another.

This means that all members typically pay a fee and that includes the Directors.
Leeds Hackspace is ran as a not-for-profit company by practice, so every penny made from donations and membership fees goes into providing services and facilities that are decided by its members with Directors taking part to help it stay together.
This means Leeds Hackspace can have amazing tools such as a LaserCutter, #MetalLathe, computer systems, various saws, a #3DPrinter or two, a vinyl cutter and a silly amount of electronics, with some quad copters thrown in. Some are owned by Leeds Hackspace bought from membership funds, others are on loan from members and stored at the Hackspace for members to use.

LoTs follow the traditional mechanics of a library while pushing the boundaries of what can be borrowed: tools, instruments, camping gear, toys, kitchen gadgets, and more! They build community while providing a low-cost, #EnvironmentallyFriendly way to meet our material needs.
"There are roughly 2,000 formally established LoTs worldwide, as well as countless informal ones. Modern LoTs have been in operation since 1978, but informal resource sharing has always been an essential part of the human experience. Many of the largest LoTs in the US started to lend tools, but they can contain whatever items the community of members needs that can be shared safely and effectively.
"#Shareable has supported the development of several LoTs over the past decade. Projects have included an official advisory role to the former mayor of Seoul, South Korea, as they developed a pilot program with 32 lending libraries in apartment buildings, an inspiration and advisory role on the creation of #LaBOM, a three-story community center and #SharingHub in Montreuil, France, and the incubation of the #USToolLibraryAlliance.
"In 2022, we began a multi-year international research project into the current state of LoTs. Following the public release of our findings, we hosted a year-long Library of Things #CoLab and Fellowship and published a free, comprehensive Library of Things Toolkit."
